Patch 2.0.1.22498 - Low FPS/stuttering (+ workarounds)

Important: If you are using an unsupported OS or unsupported system, participating in this thread will probably not help you and will add unnecessary noise.

Update: I finally gotten around to playing with affinity cores. Choosing cores 1 and 7 like in this video fixed the problem for me, at least for now. The game runs at 60FPS finally, although the menu is still stuttery as hell (although not as important). It does look like we have a reproduce-able issue on our hands now, so all that’s needed is for a permanent fix. But I think the devs have a good lead to go on.

Problem

I created this thread to gather some information about the performance issues that started occurring after the release of patch 2.0.1.22498 for some players. If you are experiencing performance issues after the patch was released, describe them here using the following template:

Problem description:
Tried workarounds:
CPU:
GPU:
GPU driver version:
RAM:
OS:
Game display resolution:
Game style: [ Classic | Reforged ]

I’ll start:

Problem description: Before the update, the menu animations were smooth and the game was running well. After the update, the menu animations and the game are both stuttering. The problem is especially bad in game when zooming out to the max.
Tried workarounds: Running the game with -graphicsapi Direct3D12 command-line args
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor, 6 Cores
RAM: 16GB
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, 8GB
GPU driver version: 24.12.1
OS: Windows 11 (up-to-date)
Game display resolution: 2560x1440, but the problem is the same even at 1080p with up-scaling.
Game style: Reforged

Known potential workarounds

  • Run the game with command-line argument -graphicsapi Direct3D12:

    1. Select Warcraft 3 in Battle.net
    2. Next to the “Play” button click on the gear icon
    3. In the drop-down menu, select “Game Settings”
    4. In the pop-up dialog, check “Additional command line arguments”
    5. Copy -graphicsapi Direct3D12 in the field
  • On AMD graphic cards with integrated graphics, try disabling the integrated graphics card in AMD Software: Adrenaline Edition

  • Tinker with the CPU affinity as shown in this video (thanks to Drakkai for the suggestion)

Problem description: Prior to update, game performance was at expected levels. After the update, in-game FPS has dropped substantially, with frequent rises and drops when moving round a map. Both the menu animations and the game stuttering.
Tried workarounds: Running the game with -graphicsapi Direct3D12 command-line arg had no impact. Neither did disabling the iGPU either in software, or in the BIOS.

When the game is running, HW Monitor shows the CPU is only pulling 40w, and the 4090 is at 1% utilisation, and drawing about 80w. It’s like it’s still trying to draw on the iGPU even though it’s been made inaccessible. In addition tried switching v-sync off, and trying the different windowed and borderless modes. Lowering the game resolution also has no impact. Only one thing works, and that’s to switch entirely from reforged mode to the original game mode. Then I’m nearly 300 fps that holds very stable.

A sample video of the issue here, just add the http bit: youtu.be/Pfw0MlaEI1I

Problem description: After the update, FPS drops significantly when moving around the map. This is independent of the camera distance.
Tried workarounds: Running the game with -graphicsapi Direct3D12 argument, in full screen and windowed mode, with the fog of war turned off has no impact. The only thing that helps a little is setting the CPU affinity for the Warcraft III.exe process and selecting the “strongest core” as in this guide https://youtu.be/5CgF6OH6Oqc

For me the problem is the same as Rayman1701, below is what i posted on the EU forums.

"I was wondering if someone else suffers from dramatic performance issue ? Got an 2080TI, not the latest i know but getting 28 fps with stutters every 2 seconds. I also notice the GFX card isn’t ramping its Core and Memory mHz. Power draw stays under 80 W while it must go to at least 280 W…

I am pretty sure this isn’t my GFX card doing wrong, SC II or other games happily utilize my card to its fullest.

Any takers ?"

Tried all workarounds, no succes.

Problem description:

FPS has dropped dramatically both in Classic and Reforged mode after the Christmas update. Not only has FPS dropped but there are constant FPS spikes every couple of seconds and in my case big spike every 5 seconds which results in a minifreeze.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3d 3.4 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT 12 GB
GPU driver version: 24.12.1
RAM: 32 GB 3600 Mhz DDR4
SSD: M.2 NVMe 1 TB
OS: Win 10 PRO 22H2
Game display resolution: 1920 x 1080
Game style: Classic / Reforged

Tried workarounds:

  • Running the game with -graphicsapi Direct3D12 command-line
  • Disabling integrated graphics on CPU
  • Disabling hyperthreading
  • Playing around with settings ( both in-game options and AMD Adrenaline software)
  • Disabling all unnecessary background programs
  • Reinstalling the game
  • Playing around with CPU Affinities

Problem is similar to what we had back in 2020 when classic WC3 was merged with Reforged tanking FPS even on good computers. Lower FPS would not even be that big of a problem but it is the constant stuttering which makes the game unplayable. I have frametime graph ( MSI Rivatuner) and even with fixed frametime which normally smoothens the FPS I still get constant spikes. After the Reforged was released eventually the developers managed to somehow fix that problem but it took them years. Granted, back then there were a lot more problems than we have now with the release of Remastered. I am not sure if it only AMD ( possibly just CPU) issue but so far I have only come across AMD users complaining about that problem and not a single Intel post. The last update before Xmas definitely changed something but the FPS drops were already noticable ( at least for me) with the release of Remastered. I know the developers are able to fix that problem because they managed to eventually do it with Reforged. Hopefully, once the holiday period is over this issue will be sorted.

During this period, I updated a lot of hardware (June 2023 to December 2024)
I have replaced the graphics card and memory
Random combination, I can have 4 combination
(Just giving examples of different graphics cards)

I have made the following attempts
1、
-graphicsapi Direct3D12
2、
Download War3 again and install it
3、
h ttps://youtu.be/5CgF6OH6Oqc
etc…
You know, I tried it,
What you don’t know, I tried too。
All have no effect

The smoothness of the game has disappeared with the update of version 1.36,
I thought 2.0 would return to the smoothness of version 1.35,
But reality dealt me a heavy blow

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/warcraft3/t/comparison-of-war3-13520-videos-with-low-fps/34560

As for 4070tis or 1070, which one has a higher fps
I have used it before, and I can tell you the conclusion that the frame rates of the two are consistent
At present. Everyone’s graphics card generally has a performance higher than 1070
So, increasing the graphics card is equivalent to no increase in fps

For some people, it did. Best if we keep the emotion out of this thread, the OP is trying to take a constructive approach to identifying and solving these issues (thank you for that). After applying the workaround described below, I got framerates higher than I’ve ever seen before.

I will now join in with the information I can provide:

Problem description: After 2.0.1.22498, frame rates were in the single digits and the game was highly unstable and crashing.
Tried workarounds: Disabling the integrated graphics present with the CPU below completely resolved this issue for me.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X 12-Core Processor 4.70 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB
RAM: 32GB
OS: Windows 11 24H2
Game display resolution: 1920x1080
Game style: Reforged (original not classic HD)
Graphics Driver Version: AMD Software Adrenalin Edition v24.12.1 (11/27/2024)

(I think it might be a good idea to list GPU driver version as well)

I updated the template to include the driver version, thanks.

Have tried every recomendation from this forum and other places online. Went even as far as uninstalling windows and starting everything from scratch but nothing has worked. Could somebody from the techincal team look into it as I see quite a few people posting about this problem in different threads?

P.S. I also noticed that PTR version of the game works a lot better. The FPS spikes arent as frequaent and FPS can climb a lot higher than the online version.

Thank you.

Under the configuration I have announced above, and with game version 2.0.1.22498, I achieved 150-200FPS on the classic version screen and on a 12 player map, and experienced screen lag during melee situations, FPS<50FPS。 In Reforged, with the same map, you can get 20-60FPS, and in melee situations, if it is less than 20FPS, there is a certain chance that the screen will freeze. You need to Alt+F4 to exit the game to escape.

I hope so ,but now it keeps one week more

You don’t usually run a desktop PC off a battery… ??? Maybe there’s a language barrier here.

It’s good that you know about translation issues

So is it a laptop?

I have what might be a very interesting case as I ran 1.35, 1.36 and 2.0.1.22498 smoothly without any issues at all until I changed my motherboard (long story short; my old motherboard broke down and I had to buy a new one). I went from using MSI B450 GAMING PLUS (smooth) to ASUS TUF GAMING B550M-PLUS WIFI II (stutters) without changing any of my other components. I experience the exact same stutter as the YouTube video shows with the same kind of frequency and I’ve tried all of the suggestions, but none of them have helped me at all. Even in singleplayer with my game paused in the menu (F10) I can see the stutter about every 4 seconds or so by moving my mouse around. However in the game menu before loading (or after quitting) any games it seems completely fine.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G CPU
RAM: 48GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER
GPU driver version: 572.16
OS: Windows 10 Home 22H2 (19045.5440)
Game display resolution: 1920x1080@144 (also tried 1920x1080@100)
Game style: Classic

The only other changes I’ve made besides changing my motherboard has been to install drivers for my new motherboard. I also played Warcraft III on the very same day my MSI motherboard died (everything was completely fine then) and again on the first day after switching to my new motherboard (and it has a lot of stutter).

The fact is the fact, it cannot be denied that it has been 2 months and there has been no official repair news. I suspect that this forum is closed, and only a few people can report the problems in the forum to the official. However, the key is whether this person or these people want to report it or not :man_shrugging:

I too am having issues, constantly receiving 10-30 FPS, with an average of about 18. Used to get 150+ before the 2.0 patch dropped.

I SOLVED THIS FOR ME.

I tried everything, I even accepted the fact that I was going to run at 60fps. However, even when my fps counter said 60-80, every 4 seconds exactly there was a massive hitch that I could feel in the mouse cursor, like my mouse cursor would freeze for at least 100ms. I genuinely thought it was unplayable and I had to refund the game.

All I wanted to do was play the campaign!

Here’s what I did:

I deleted my save game. I reset to default settings using the reset button in the settings menu. Then, I clicked “Classic” mode instead of Reforged. THEN I started a new campaign. My fps was suddenly at 200 (not as high as I want it to be for a 23 year old game), but regardless the unplayable mouse/frame stutter was gone. I see in my FPS counter that every 4 seconds my fps drops by 10-20, but I do NOT feel the hitch or visually see it anymore.

Every other solution I tried before this didn’t work and I think it’s because I started my save on Reforged and only then tried to change settings and make it work.

Let me know if this works for you!

RTX 4080 Super
64gb DDR5 6000 MT/s ram

Can’t believe this hardware can barely run Warcraft III lmao
