I’m not a developer to tell you specifics in the code, many plenty people have specified how this is bad code. if you are to be right and this game is just merely a fresh coat of paint, I would be happily get my refund and stay out of the way. I’m sure many people will feel the same. Good luck if thats the case.
As someone who makes custom games’ I would absolutely LOVE an OPTION to enable ‘smooth movement’ in the gameplay settings. EVEN if they disable it for melee. Then once a few custom games rolled out with it; the playerbase themselves could decide via a vote; if melee should use the new movement or not.
I enjoy starcraft 2’s movement; however I do believe that it IS far too fluid for a game like warcraft 3. however Im sure they could come up with something that is somewhere between the 2.
I’ll try my best to bring up specific parts of movement below, and my suggestions. (for fun ofc)
Turn-rate: should absolutely be kept However units should be able to make small corrections (up-to 20 degrees) without the unit needing to come to a stop and turn.
reaction-delay; should be reduced by 75% (but not dropped completely (as mentioned it is there to level the playing field for players with high latency.)
Maximum Units moving at a time; This should be fixed; though it is almost exclusively a problem with custom games and only occurs when you have more than 60~ units trying to move at the same time. Many games like TD’s get around this limitation by applying the ‘ghost(visible)’ ability to units, however they really shouldn’t need to.
Pathing: Square pathing means it takes 4 units to surround someone, Circular pathing means it only takes 3. though smoother movements would make it harder to surround a fleeing unit. this would have the biggest effect on competitive gameplay, so it should probably be kept the same (except with a toggle in the editor that map developers can switch to new pathing)
This is NOT Warcraft 4, if they ever do Warcraft 4 they are allowed to change the core of the game, as long as this has Warcraft 3 on its name it is Warcraft 3 and therefore core mechanics such as pathing should stay the same.
Units moving smoother doesn’t have to effect collision, does it? Can’t you just make things look smoother and have them respond with less delay while keeping collision the same? I understand the square collisions but even in an open field it’s clunky…But that’s just WC3! I’m more than sure that in the development of the remaster many things will get it fixed and transfered it to the original engine, including 16 year old clunkyness.
Fighting the AI as you fight your opponents is a staple of old school Blizzard rts games. The horrible pathing of units in Starcraft is probably the biggest contributor to it’s insanely high skill ceiling and skill floor. It’s the reason why SC’s high level gameplay is MUCH more impressive than that of it’s sequel. The same is true for Warcraft 3 but to a lesser extent as the AI and path finding are better than that of SC.
For me Warcraft 3 hits that sweet spot where it’s not obnoxious to use if you’re bad like in Starcraft, but it’s not too smart on it’s own like in Starcraft 2. It’s just another way to express your skills over your opponents.
Besides, this game is called REFORGED for a reason, it’s not supposed to be a new game but rather a new take on it, designed to mirror the Warcraft 3 we all know and love, it’s main audience are people who either played it years ago or still play to this day, so I don’t think they should tinker with pathing just to appease new players.
Besides, if people are so eager to play a modern AAA rts with smart pathing, why not play SC 2? I see it being referenced a ton in many threads. It’s free and it’s modern. I see no point in making Warcraft 3 work more like SC 2 does, it fills a different niche.
I have a few questions for you.
Do you want WC4?
Do you think that WC4 will be developed sooner if WC3:R gets a lot of attention?
Do you think WC3:R would attract any new players if it was kept the same?
Do you think that with the small core audience of WC3 without any new players the developers would deemed this project successful?
Do you see any benefit of an influx of new players into WC3?
Do you want WC4?
Not really, especially if it means changing something I’ve loved for the last 10 years, too much. I’m happy with Warcraft 3 as it is and now it’s known for certain that they would not ignore WoW storyline in case of a possible sequel. In the last 15 years Blizzard developed only a single game I liked and a single expansion to it (SC 2 and LotV) so I’m not optimistic in regard to their new projects.
Do you think that WC4 will be developed sooner if WC3:R gets a lot of attention?
Maybe, but even 15 years later WoW is a money printing machine. It will remain /the/ warcraft game for quite some time. In that case, I do not care about Warcraft 4.
Do you think WC3:R would attract any new players if it was kept the same?
Any? Yeah I mean people try out old games all the time. I guarantee you there’s someone out there playing Morrowind for the first time right now.
Would it attract a lot of them? Not really but let’s not pretend that the game is dead as it is. You can find a melee match in under 1-2 minutes at almost all times in EU. The player base is steadily growing since they’ve started patching the game again some time ago.
To answer the remaining questions, I do not think it’s worth it to change a 15 years old game that much just to make more people buy it and drop it a month later. Please remember that while graphical changes can be toggled on/off, fundamental aspects of gameplay such as pathing can not.
Blizz: Yes, WC3:R how much are we talking about?
Devs: Possibly reaching millions $.
Blizz: Are we gonna make a profit?
Devs: I heard that someone out there is playing Morrowind for the first time right now, as we speak, sir.
Blizz: say no more, do it. you had me at someone.
So you’re not actually interested in discussion but would rather strawman? Do as you please then.
I’m giving you a real argument. If you can’t interpret it it’s not my fault. Also consider yourself a big outlier in not wanting WC4. Really, can’t argue much with someone that doesn’t care about the longevity of the franchise.
Its hilarious some people here have reduced the entirety of WC3 to the one singular fact that the AI is so horrendous it can’t pick a straight path to navigate itself.
Its even more hilarious that these people think by having a competent AI their game is ruined.
It’s hard man, I don’t understand it either but it goes way beyond us. pete stilwells - units too smart is bad I don’t agree with this at all, but the production lead Pete Stilwell’s has the same appalling mentality. God forbid, he drags the entire project on his own bias and believes. Hopefully, some senseful people in the team can pull some to us.
to OP - I think that responsiveness should be improved. It is frustrating to play when your units don’t do exactly what you wanted them to do.
to pathing AI - I think it should remain as it is now. This is, after all, only remaster of an old game so it should play the same as original. Improvements to pathing along with other changes (new races, new story, new gameplay features, etc.) should be saved new game, hopefuly W4.
I’m so innocent, at first I assumed this was supposed to mean the S rank in BW.
the puristiest of them all

Found the exact interview. Blizzplanet and Bridenbecker.

also documented here, under multiplayer.
So yes, the AI conversation is definitely there. But the takeaway is they still want to keep it the competitive nature of the game the same. Best to listen to the full interview, because it covers a lot of other things the clip I linked doesn’t talk about.
Sure, they will keep it in the classic ladder away from the progressive ladder.
To address op, from my understanding was introduced to help the people with 56k modems. If you play on some zero delay latency it works as you’d expect.
There’s the multiplayer lag, and cases when an unit has to finish some casting animation unless you break it manually. Both are ‘legit’ things. If you meant something else, I have no idea what it is
This was against AI, not casting. You probably don’t know if you haven’t been exposed to anything more modern.
