For all of you aspiring map makers

Yep not really caring honestly. Pretty common place these days with any game, DOTA being an exception with a few other holdouts. Most mods are made by fans anyways, and are not in it for the money. I can see a few greedy mod developers being concerned over this, but eh. A real developer would just make their own game using programming or an engine made for it like Unity, Unreal, or Gamemaker. Halflife was the start of most of the mod scene in the late 90’s, and many games that were popular stayed free. A few spin-offs came like CS, or Day of Defeat, but they developed mostly new games and were not just map edits.

I never liked that huge obsession with copyright.

Is it safe to post my map on the Hive workshop? I hope when I make a private map Blizzard won’t see it.

Well then you’re an idiot, not creative, and your opinion really doesn’t matter either way. Go and play the custom games that others make for you and shut up.

The sole reason I bought this game, If I knew last year i wouldn’t had bought the game, now I can’t even refund it, feels like such a waste of money.

Don’t forget that what ever you make will be officialy property of Blizzard, you canno’t take anything what you make in the game elsewhere, god forbid people use their creativity and make something as huge as DoTA became and Blizz ends up without their cut. SMH

It most likely won’t fly because the EULA isn’t worth jack in most countries. This clause exists so they have a reason to go bully mapmakers with their lawyers. Sure, the EULA wouldn’t actually hold up in court, but Blizzard can just delay the case until you can’t afford to defend yourself anymore.

Does it really matter unless you are creating something truely unique and good? And if assuming you do, you would have to act on your idea in the actual market in someway.

Basically, if you want to create a game you can do so and if it’s good, remake the same genre. Blizzard doesn’t own MOBA, Tower Defense, Tug of Wars, RTS, RPG, etc etc.

Final thought, after all the commotion about DOTA, that was the only game that amounted to anything. All those amazing great creators people have talked about here were not impacted.

Create games and enjoy!

If you create a new game “genre” like autochess. You aren’t allowed to call it autochess anymore if you redesign it. They literally own everything about what you create as if they made it themselves. So no, it’s not fine, not when other companies at least offer compensation or some kind of merit system. Nope, just gtfo you scrub and thanks for the work that we get to steal.

There were a number of other mapmakers who went on to make standalone games based on their maps such as Warlock, Gem TD and Element TD. The thing is that no one can know if they’re making something ‘truly unique and good’. There’s no way that Icefrog knew that DOTA would be such a huge success.

You can try and paint a happy face over this or downplay its impact, but if you have a map that’s an unexpected success, Blizzard can just take that concept without saying thank you. Would it have been fair to do that to Icefrog or any of the other devs I mentioned?

Nice rebuttal. Resort to name calling because your not intelligent enough to come up with anything better. I will go enjoy custom and the campaign thanks!

The Blizzard crap again on a large.

As far as I can tell Hiveworkshop is the only serious mapmaking community alive. They also care for intellectual property, since most of maps were edited versions of previously created ones with renamed authors.

E.g.: Slide ninja slide/Slide spongebob slide/Slide kitty slide

They also try to develop tools for the game like new supported languages for mapmaking or new world edit functionalities/clients and has an entire section for custom 3d models, tutorials and other resources. It is worth checking it out.

Not just for this game, expect to see this kind of crap more frequently in many areas. This is what late stage capitalism is about.

so sad when people spend their time to create something good and bli$$ard want the piece of cake for it or even the full cake cuz they cant create good games anymore…

You’re not worth the trouble. Go and enjoy your stagnant games where nothing new crops up because of Blizz’s awful policy.

Corporatism is often seen as a result of unchecked capitalism.

Emphasis on the word “unchecked.” That word is VERY important.

Capitalism is the best system but only when it has checks and balances implemented to make sure nobody’s screwing anyone else over.

I mostly agree with what you’re saying. if properly regulated capitalism promotes healthy competition and rewards those who can provide high quality products and services.

The issue mainly is that right now I don’t think I could say with confidence that we’re living in a society where capitalism is being properly regulated.

Neither can I, honestly. But I’d still take this over socialism/communism. Those systems don’t work at all without a tyrannical government to back them.

Hell I’d argue they don’t work even then but yeah…

Honestly I’d be interested in a system which takes cues from both capitalism and socialism. As it stands one of the most consistent problems is that all the money keeps getting funnelled towards the top and so far as I understand socialism an important aspect of it is that the profits of the company belong to those who work for the company.
