I think the game creates save points automatically, but I don’t trust them so I manually save.

Previous check point saves will be invalid when this patch goes live.

Campaign map progress will be preserved. So for example, if you finished Act 1, your progress will remain.

Campaign saves can only be loaded as long as the related map version hasn’t been modified. If the map file was modified in the most recent patch, saves from the previous patch will not work.
