Can't load SCR anymore, "Game is running" but it's not

Anyone else having the same problems after the update?

  1. Icon for Remastered no longer launches Blizzard Desktop app
  2. Have to use Blizzard Desktop app icon to launch it
  3. When you click on SCR on the side the big blue button says “Playing Now” and next to it says “Game is running” (when it is not)
  4. Close blizzard app, try to uninstall remastered through remove programs, but it says the game is running or being used by the Battlenet app (even though both are not running)
  5. Tried to uninstall/install blizzard desktop app again, but it doesn’t help

You need to close starcraft.exe in the task manager. There is a thread on teamliquid about it with others having the same issue including myself. Can’t post the link unfortunately.

Yeah same here, what was strange is it loaded initially but as ‘old’ StarCraft without the new graphics. Then when I tried to load it again it was already running.

same here. what can we do? tried rebooting, killing processes in task manager. nothing helps. remember having installed some update couple of days ago.

Hey all,

We’ve started getting some reports of this recently and are checking it out now. Can anybody having this problem try resetting their game settings and retest? You may need to turn HD back on.

I’ve experienced this too. I checked task manager first thing and sure enough, starcraft.exe was running. Ended task and it let me launch the game. It’s definitely a weird bug.

I’m having similar issues with the original edition. I have reset every setting I could find.

Yes, I’m having the same issue after the last patch earlier today. The old SC loads.

Go it to work. For me I had to not only reinstall the blizzard app, but also restart my PC.

Well…I give up, uninstalled starcraft and battle.net. Reinstalling off the old discs since Blizzard can’t stop shooting themselves in the foot.

Me too
Can’t get It to work???
Restarted Computer, refreshed Network. Closed in Task manager and tried again. Ran as admin. Nothing has helped. Going to try reinstall battle net app.

Been dealing with this for over an hour and just got it to work.
Task manager didn’t help. (Couldn’t find starcraft at all there)
I reset the game setting, changed setting to launch 32 bit client, uninstalled and reinstalled battle net and StarCraft multiple times. (was only able to uninstall after deleting Blizzard Entertainment catche data) I had restarted my computer earlier, but restarted it again after doing all of this and its working now.

Make sure to restart AFTER you reinstall the app

I reinstalled battlenet launcher, restarted my computer, fixed the issue and played a game. Closed out of SCR clicking exit, then closed battlenet laucher. Later, double clicked alias and the launcher loaded as usual, but it was reporting SCR game was running and back to square one. This time, restarted and it was playable again.
This sucks. I have to restart every time to play? Please fix.

  1. Open the launcher
  2. If the blue button already says “playing now”, then hit ctrl+alt+del and look for starcraft.exe in the open applications and kill it
  3. Wait a moment and the blue button should change back to “play”

For those using Windows 10, follow these instructions:

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete
Open “Task Manager”
Click on the “Details” Tab
Scroll down and find “starcraft.exe”
Right-click on it and select “End Task”

This will stop all of the processes running in the background, which will allow you to launch StarCraft again.

Once you finish, I would also recommend performing a “Scan and Repair” of your StarCraft files. Just open the Blizzard Launcher and click on the “Options” dropdown menu.

Hey all,

We were able to reproduce this by launching using the Starcraft shortcut on our end. If you use the “Play” button on the Blizzard Launcher Application instead of your shortcut, does that fix the issue?

I got SC1 to work after opening battlenet and then deleting the .exe file in task manager - however even though the game plays it does not play in the remastered mode.

The bug doesn’t happen for me when I use the Battle.net shortcut, but does when I use the Starcraft shortcut.
