I’ve been having trouble thinking about which avatar is better suited for what.
One increases the DPS of both armies and severely handicaps the enemy, and one just adds big AoE damage to your army to make up for the fact Abrogators is basically the only form of automatic AoE Zeratul has.
I can see the utility of Form, being that it can help you deal a massive amount of damage to enemies in quick bursts, but I feel as well that Essence is generally better because it advantages both players equally…
That being said, I’m not sure if one is stronger than the other, but if that’s the case I would be oriented towards Essence being the stronger one and therefor feel like Form deserves some love.
Despite this, I still use Form almost constantly because I like the idea of big bursts of damage. Still, I’d like to know what other people think is better suited for certain situations.
Form for dealing with attack waves, Essence for pushing into heavily fortified locations.
Both Avatars are again situational based on a player’s choice of build.
Despite the widely used Avatar of Essence, Avatar of Form is actually quite strong. Essence hinges on the fact the player and/or ally has a sizeable army to deal damage - the devolved units (for the most part) still need to be killed despite the damage reduction from one form to another.
That said, those that use Avatar of Form rarely micro it to max potential. Proper cast of ability, repeat cast, appropriate split of the Xel’naga Crystals, and focus targeting key units are generally not done at all.
That said they are so good that either one does a great job without having to micro (including disable auto-cast on devolve to maximize its effect with proper micro and positioning). So that I guess is part of the reason why I don’t see them used optimally.

Both are situational. If you are on missions that don’t need split ups and you have a massive deathball then the Avatar of Essence is better. But on missions where you need to be on multiple fronts then Avatar of Form is great since it can wipe out enemy waves or hold positions on its own. Though I think most players would lean more to Essence because it is easier to use. I think a little speed up on Form’s “plasma blast” would help up its popularity a bit since it just gets stuck reacquiring targets if you have it attack with your army.

The storm-spamming one is for solo-attacks where you drop him to destroy a wave or protect something by himself while u are away.
The evolution one is for buffing your entire armies when doing a massive push with your teammate into a great enemy force.

Im not too sure always when i play Zeratul. Most of the time i go with essence (the one that downgrades the enemy army), but if theres a dehaka or a abathur who relys on biomass i go for the form one (the one with storms and adds).
Simply because im not too sure if downgrading the enemy army is good for their biomass

Essence/orange to enable to get that achievement
Blue/form to set up a mirror match between it, and the Lock & Load bonus objective
Either one is perfectly fine for normal brutal missions. But when it comes to certain mutations Essence is so good for it’s devolve ability.
The way I play, if i go mass cannon then i pick Avatar of Form. If I play with army, I pick Avatar of Essence.
For me both of them are great, but I prefer Form because of its design. Just that.
