It baffles me that some of my opponents still waste time doing worker splits. It literally has no effect at all if you are not on GSL level so why waste energy on something that never will change the outcome of a game?
It is like trying to mule specific mineral patches. Yes if you are a pro player it might matter but if you are not even GM the impact is so small it is idiotic to focus on.
I have played 1000s of games and not a single game have been lost because I skipped worker splitting, muled the wrong mineral patch or ignored returning the minerals before constructing a building.
Those things may matter if you are a pro but for 99.9% of players they are just a waste of time.
Do you want to get to GM, and then have to remind yourself of these small things, or would you have rather had the habit to do the small things before GM, so you don’t have to learn them for the first time.
I do agree that not too much emphasis should be put on those things if it intervenes with other important macro mechanics.
But if you can do a relevant action while you’re not doing anything else, might as well make the second count.
What else are you doing except building your first worker and splitting the mining ones in the first second of the game? Of course the benefit it gives you is pretty minuscule, but it’s not like you’re doing it at the expense of something more important. Jokes on you, bud.
APM is a limited resource and I think it better to practice spending it on things that actually matter.
I have lost count on how many opponents I have played with 2-3 times my APM that split workers like a pro, micro their reapers like they were GM but float resources like they were gold.
I think it comes down to people wanting to pretend to be pros (or thinking that they one day will be a pro) instead of just focusing what really matters below GM: macro and scouting.
how worker micro doesnt help? i’ve had 100 more minerals than my opponent at the 1:00 against the same build order. worker micro is really helpful and if you are serious about the game you should practice it
when i mess up my worker micro and i see my workers dancing around even though i’ve directly commanded them to mine from a certain mineral, i just leave and accept defeat and requeue
You haven’t answered what is so important you are doing when the game starts, except ordering a worker? So far as I know there is nothing else to spend your APM at, so why not make at least basic split?
Personally, I have this habit from BW.
Now you understand why people with double your APM tend to call you names when being destroyed by you. And you have solved the second mistery: How is possible that someone can have the double of your APM and still lose miserably?
On the other hand if at the begining of the game you have nothing to do, even something like worker-split doesn’t harm.
Maybe it is some kind of ritual that keep people warmed-up, just like athletes before a race…
Because APM does not mean anything if you are not using it on anything useful.
I have played vs players with 100 APM that could multitask much better than others with 250+ APM.
Attacking in 3 places at once while keeping up your macro=good.
Spamming 250 APM while moving your entire army in one ball and still floating resources = bad.
