Why does "Fatal attraction" still exist?

So…dispite Sc2 being a game on life-support, i do still quite enjoy the co-op commander, dispite it getting very little (positive) attention. Some things could be improved, for example…there are some troublesome mutators that we could do without.

For example, the “Fatal attraction” mutator is kind of disruptive in the sense that it outright cancels out all orders. You can’t build short range units since their attacks are disabled by the mutator and if one tiny unit gets into your mineral line (like a reaper) it completely stops your economy.

As such, could another look at which mutators are possible be taken?
Preferably i’d see the removal of fatal attraction, removing player options/choice and permanently stunning them in combat does not mean the mission is harder, it just means the mechanic is Poorly designed.

Fatal attraction could be vastly improved by making it a “teleport” that doesn’t interrupt orders. (so it still pulls units into range, but not “stunning”/needing to mass click orders.

Another mutator i could see that warrants removal, is “double edged”/“Diffusion” there is no benefit in making the mutator exist. It makes melee units irrelevant and not worth using and non-artillery units like stalkers also be useless. It also eliminates heroic units from usability, such as zeratul.

Honestly, some of these mutators just seem like shoddy and badly thought-out lazily designed mechanics.

The whole point is to make you change your playstyle. A lazy design would be one that does not change the gameplay. Some mutations will counter some commanders, that’s how it’s supposed to be.

You mean that there is a counter to being pulled in from miles away after killing a broodling? then psi-stormed to death without actually having any control over my units?

Some mutators are (currently) just unable to be done…and some of them are just plain unfun, not difficult or challenging.

Unable to be done? So you mean nobody has ever won a game with the mutations you mentioned?

No i mean, they’re annoying AF and i’d rather not see them ever XD

Also, leeching +damagesharing = ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Diffusion, while a hindrance to melee units, does not outright eliminate them. Also, Zeratul’s stalkers are one of the best units in co-op for both mutators, by a significant margin. They outrange diffusion, they can blink out of range, they can spread damage from mutators evenly, they can they can disengage easily, they’re relatively durable. Everything you could ask for.

Double edged, however, does completely eliminate splash damage as an option, which is really bad against some enemy comps. Personally, I think the enemy composition should decide if you want splash or not, because having to fight infested or waves of 200 zerglings with only low dps single target damage units is really bad, but having to fight skyterran with that is more or less the same as always.

Fatal attraction is nothing compared to vertigo. Having this mutator is annoying, yes, but I cannot stand vertigo physically. I become dizzy when the screen turns.

That is basically Lazy design in a nutshell: “I am so lazy I will make a mutation that just outright counter a playstyle but didn’t think about how it make a certain commander unplayable.”

Good thing we have a mind-reader like you who knows what the Devs are thinking and can design better than they can. If only other people could notice your genius. I’m sure you’d be Blizzard’s chief game designer in no time.

If you could just play your normal strategy with any mutators using any commander then what’s the point of playing with mutators, they are supposed to have a reaction from the player and even for mutators that “counter” your commander you can always find ways to contribute to the mission, remember this is a coop game.

An example is stukov vs propagators, this mutator was literally introduced to counter stukov, but stukov can still play against them using a mech army. Tychus is one of the commanders that is most affected by double edged but I’ve still seen Maguro totally carry the game playing Tychus with double edged.

That said, fatal attraction is one of the worst mutators cause there is very little counterplay to it, range is too long to try to outrange it and only a select few units are unafected, and of course buildings are also unafected, so the mutator either makes your army useless or doesn’t do anything at all (if you use static units or buildings), with very little in between.

Hmm, I think buildings are also affected by double edged. Recently I had that in a random brutal+x, and it seemed to me that my monoliths killed themselves.

Was refering to buildings being unafected by fatal attraction.

Ah, I see it and I can see it now, sorry. I must have misread it.

Send in a stack of Battlecruisers, literally nothing you can do until either the enemy or your forces are dead.

Get hit by Brood Lords out of range, your forces get locked killing Broodlings forever.

If you get Fatal Attraction and don’t want to deal with it, just quit the match and start a new game. The queues are practically instant and people leave matches at the beginning for all sorts of reasons already.

Any kind of damage-sharing mutator and any kind of fatal attraction mutator are kind of an auto-quit for me. They’re just not fun and lock out nearly every unit in most commander’s arsenals.

In short, is auto-leaving the intended consequence for this?

(Enter the people who claim they have no issues with it and think it’s fine. Yeah, might be for that special 1% of you but i doubt i’m the only one who dispises some of these mutators. They’re not hard, they’re just plain unfun.

As many have said before, this could been a challenge but a lot less annoying, if it was something like 75-90% less damage on the other sides enemy units. Just don’t make stuff immune, that’s lazy and bad game design, just like 1 hit kills are.

Please remove Fatal Attraction from the game. It doesn’t make anyone a better Starcraft player. It’s simply annoying. Either you brute force it or you don’t. No skill involved.

I leave every game that rolls Fatal Attraction.
