Why do people never land Vikings?

A lot of the time, I see Terrans fighting powerful Mechanical Ground Units, like Thors and Stalkers, that can hit the Vikings while they are in the air, but even though Vikings deal Bonus Damage to Mechanical Units on the Ground, they don’t land them to save their other Units that are getting crushed. (This normally happens in Team Games in my League.)
Every time I see that, I just think, essentialy, “Y U no Land Vikings?”

How much gas vikings needed?
Vikings do landed in tvp scenario, they had excellent performance slaughtering probes. In other cases, they can, but remember the cost.

They die faster than marines and cost 150/75. They also take forever to replenish unless you are running two starports with reactors which is generally why you don’t want to land them.

150/100 Mins/Gas for a Viking, but they can absolutely murder Stalkers if they land. As in, 2 or 3 upgraded Vikings will Three-Shot a Stalker.

Oh, yeah, with twice or thrice as much HP as Marines and builtin Armor, sure.

They have base 0 armor, and they can’t be micro’d on the ground like a marine can, so they do indeed die faster than a marine. Secondly, the units they do well against, also do well against them and immortals shred them as bad as roaches. I’m just giving you the straight explanation as to why, it is a last resort move.

Cons outweigh the benefits.

Vikings cost way too much gas to be thrown around on the ground in the majority of situations. It has literally lost people the game to land vikings in many scenarios.

Do you know how slow and how big landed Vikings are? They are as slow as non-stim Marine and have big collision size that cause most Vikings to block each other path which is extreme hard to micro. You build Vikings to do air control, not ground. Vikings also cost so much resource, you don’t need them to die for no reason.

Landed Vikings can work in either last resort or you are ahead with no enemy air unit left. Otherwise, they die very fast to all other units even if they are good at such as: Stalkers w/ Blink can out-micro, Immortals do 3-shots against Vikings (and you can’t chase them when there is Warp Prism) and so many units that have their way of dealing with landed Vikings.

I’ll always say that the intent of the viking was good, but its execution was always very poor. Whenever you have to land your vikings its usually gg, feels bad man.

They do all the time. When you are doing mid-game pushes against protoss to deny their third base if you went to Vikings instead of liberators you obviously want to land those to help fight. In Terran vs Zerg it’s smart to open up with a viking to pushback overlords and then you can land it to get a drone kill or two and distract while hellions hit somewhere else, or use it to backup the timing the zerg didn’t see because you pushed back his overlords.

Another situation I’ve seen is when someone chases my CC down with Vikings, then just has them sit above the CC and wait for Marines instead of landing them.

But thanks for the explanation, everyone!

People land Vikings a lot to battle but they are not meant to be ground units. A Siege Tank is miles better than the Viking and costs only a bunch of gas more.

landing vikings

  • in TvT to take out tanks
  • in TvZ / TvP if you don’t need them anymore
(all way better with that ‘fast transform upgrade’ though)

But still: other units do the same things just way better / more cost efficiently. (on the ground)

You should only land them when there are no other air units left to kill

on top of that landed vikings take a lot of space which makes situations more complicated in terms of repositioning otherstuff like retreating forces through the landed viking group is a nightmare logisticwise and that landing animation take its sweet time

Sure, the landing animation takes its time, but they are considered Air Units for the full duration of both transformations, so you can “kite” against Roaches, ‘Rauders and Adepts by switching modes up and down to dodge their shots.

Ever watched HoTS openning?

actually the opposite is true for TvT also.
Like when the other guy has more vikings than you and you land your vikings to wait for more vikings + thor(s) / marines.

Edit: Not sure if anyone answered “transformation servos” as the name of the 'faster transform upgrade" (techlab + armory needed I believe)

Oh. Well, he was just a bad pilot and landed right next to the Ultralisk.

(At first I thought you were talking about Heroes of the Storm lol.)

TvT is the exception, you drop them like you said, to wait for more, or you drop them on out of position tanks. The viking should have had so much more potential.
