Why Byun continue playing?

For real he is hurting himself, and he still continue playing with his wrist problem, why continue? I don’t like to see him hurting because he is playing, not sure what others thinks about the situation.

It is way. Of attention seeker… if wrists did hurt. He would stop playing…

Think about it. There are only so many years of SC2 left for him to make his mark in the game’s history. “Live life to the fullest.” He is doing what he loves while he is at his peak for it. He’s not looking for the long term game play, he is looking to seize the moment and take the W right now. I absolutely get where he is coming from and respect him for it. As someone who also has a competitive edge, I would take the same risks on my body if it meant I could as far as he did. People can ask him to stop all he wants, but he is going to do what he loves until his wrists break for good.

This loser just doesn’t understand what it means to follow your dreams. Just tries to drag down the efforts of pro players when he can, especially if they are not Zerg. Absolutely 0 humanity in this dingus.

If he keeps playing, it’s because it doesn’t hurt enough.

If his wrist issues were that bad, he would have stopped playing already. He didn’t, so… is it really that bad? Obviously not.

People like Byun eat, drink and sleep on Starcraft 2. You have to in order to be as good as him. Naturally someone as competitive and passionate about SC2 as him is going to do everything he can to maximize his skills.

Byun’s competitive SC2 days may be numbered, but I think he is giving it his all to solidify his legacy before that happens.

Nah Byun is one of the players carried solely by micro and this is exactly the cost you pay for that kind of playstyle. TaeJa was a far better player, had many more accomplishments, but had the same issue. He had to get treatment and his play has never been as good since.

There are plenty of other areas Byun could improve in his gameplay. His unit comps & other decision making is pure garbage, so if he stopped trying to squeeze 0.5% more efficiency out of his units during battle he could double or triple the quality of his play. It also requires less apm. But strategic thinking is much more difficult than splitting marines, so he’s probably going to stick with splitting his marines.

I can tell you right now you have not spent a single day in the gym seriously in your entire life. People will push through pain to achieve their goals. Byun is the type to go above and beyond in his attempt to reach the top. You don’t even play Terran. All high level Terran players know the wrist takes a hit when a game gets heated. You don’t know anything, yet here you are, downplaying his efforts. Shame on you.

Exactly this. He’s making his mark while he can, because he knows if he takes a long break, he will probably not be in peak shape when he comes back to the game (and the game might not be in peak shape either).

Classic personality switch in an attempt to continue putting down this pro player. Why don’t you take all your alt accounts and pack it? Troll another thread. Balance whine all you want, but don’t you dare talk bad about a pro player that doesn’t deserve it.

Lol… I go to the gym all the time. I’m a competitive athlete, and referee at high level. There is a massive difference between “pushing through pain” to improve your health and risking injuries that could permanently damage your health. Would you run a marathon on a broken leg?

Professional athletes that are much better than ByuN at what they are doing have forfeited games or tournaments because of injuries so they could come back stronger. Tennis is a prime example where this happens fairly frequently. ByuN would play in GSL, pause the game because of “pain” then the next day sign up for a couple of online cups… if he was in that much pain, why not rest…? People like Maru or Dark – that actually have injuries – have done things like that. You don’t see Maru competing in small tournaments. This really makes me think Byun is more than fine.

Okay, I don’t follow the pros closely, so I’ll put my thoughts in two categories.

IF Byun is lying about his wrist pain. IF he is using it as an excuse to pause the game, readjust himself, and win decisive moments in games, then that is very cheap of him. I take back everything I said IF he is lying or exaggerating about his wrist pain. He is playing dirty if he is using the wrist pain excuse tactically.

The fact is, we are not him, and we do not know him closely. Only those around him know what he is actually going through right now. However, I see no reason for him to lie or exaggerate about his pain. As for what degree of damage is occurring, that is not known either. That is, is he at high risk for carpal tunnel syndrome? Is he spraining his wrist? Is he tearing a muscle? We don’t know for sure.

IF he is telling the truth, here are my thoughts.

There is a difference between holding a workout session and playing real matches. IF he is pushing through the pain while playing ladder matches, he is doing the wrong thing - he should rest more. It would be foolish to practice on top of a serious injury.

IF he is pushing through the pain in the middle of a match, he most certainly should see it through. Your analogy is an exaggeration. The equivalent of your analogy would be if Byun has severe carpal tunnel syndrome, should he keep playing - and the answer is obviously no, because he literally cannot at that point.

A better analogy would be, if Byun has a sprained wrist, or if something is at risk of tearing as he plays his game, should he keep playing - and the answer is, you bet.

There are so so many reasons why Byun should go allin at this very moment. For one, SC2 is kind of dead, and the future is uncertain. The Olympics are not going to die out any time soon. SC2 esports will be 100% community run once the contracts run out. This is literally the end of the line. Things won’t be the same once they are 100% community run.

Think about Byun’s age too. You are at your peak in SC2 in your early 20s. He is 27. If he takes a break for a year minimum, he is going to get THAT much older, THAT much rustier, THAT much less reactive to things on the map. SC2 is highly reactive - and that reaction time dwindles with age. Olympic athletes tend to reach their peak in their early/mid 20s as well. Obviously there are exceptions, but you are at your peak youth in your mid 20s.

Sacrificing your wrist health isn’t terrible either - unlike other sports where you need your arm or leg to function properly long term. Think about it - if he takes first place in the moment, but gets Carpal Tunnel, it’s worth it. His name is glorified in SC2 history, and it only costs him surgery in his wrist in severe cases.

I don’t know. I have a hard time believing you really are a competitive athlete. Have you even tasted real victory? It’s such a powerful feeling, and if people want that moment at the cost of some body damage (obviously not to the extent of a broken leg), then what is it to you? I have nothing but respect for people who give 110% in their passions. Clearly you don’t feel the same. I don’t think you have the athlete’s spirit, so I cannot convince you that winning is worth it. I doubt you are a winner either, because the feeling of taking a life time loss is one of the heaviest things you have to live out for the rest of your life. Living with that guilt of wishing you should have pushed yourself more hurts more than any injury out there (obviously not broken bone level injury).

Going back to your marathon example, I have seen many athletes tear something in the middle of a match, yet they desperately try to finish the competition. It’s in a lot of motivational videos. You don’t see them curl down and give up. You see them hop their way to the finish line. Because if you don’t do that, you have to live out the guilt of not finishing, or losing. There is a saying that goes “no one remembers who came in second.”

I could go on, but we either agree or disagree. Even if you disagree, don’t be like this BatZ scumbag that tries to drag Byun’s name through the dirt. Only do that if Byun is lying or using that excuse to gain an unfair advantage. Otherwise, don’t you dare put down Byun’s decision to keep pushing through his pain. Doing that goes beyond any level of whining - it is disgusting behavior.

guy needs(needed) to build some muscle around his wrists… but i guess that should’ve been something to work on before wrecking them…

Many examples of pro athletes continuing despite their injuries. Ronaldo, Maradona, almost all snowboard and skiing champs, MVP.

I think most of them just try to push it as far as they can before they are really forced to retire.
