I have five commanders left unplayed:
- Abathur
- Alarak
- Dehaka
- Stetmann
- Zeratul
Which one would you recommend I get next?
Of the commanders I’ve played, I found Tychus to be the least interesting so Zeratul is probably last place for me.

I like both Abathur and Dehaka - they are really powerful and based on killcount mechanics, Dehaka additionaly add RPG mechanism to the game and various units. Alarak is very microintensive, but c’mon, you have Alarak with his charming personality. Stateman is recommended only if you have good CPU. Zeratul is quite simple to play - he is like simple, powerful protoss. I recommend Dehaka
Most of them are overpowered due to power creep, or are just plain overtuned.
But at least Dehaka and Alarak are rewarding to play well unlike the snoozefest of Zeratul and Tychus as you already implied.
At this point for me the only reason to ever play Zeratul is to troll with mass cannons and the relic trapping exploit, then mass probes.
What do you make of Stetmann? Fun? Not fun?
Zeratul - is most powerful, but only one way to play, NO upgrades at all?!? army too expensive so you can push few units and they die; NO pylons at all?!? - wait this is ancient protoss, so why modern protoss needs now Pylons!?!
So for me is not fun to play basically only the hero Zeratul who runs entire map to find 3 artifacts to evolve always on the same path (here Evolution means you can get by default 1) Zealots or Void rays for few seconds to help you out! Now after 1st artifact 2) you get a big pylon to slow enemy or you can get Tessarect monolyth (like Karax has). then at 2 artifact found on map you get: 3) Faster paid reinforcement (nobody choose that) or faster Blink for Zeratul (again nobody choose ) or Tessarect Cannons ( everybody want that … so those Cannons you can make images of themself and they shoot (kind of cheat - this is too powerful + they do not need pylon power?!? ) 4) Some Avatar of Form (summon charged chrystals which do little psionic storm - nobody choose this! ) or Avatar of Essence (everybody choose this Avatar) - that transforms enemy units into lower evolutionary form (eg enemy came with hydralisk and they became roaches then little zerglings). And mainly you get the hero has the same 4x skills: Blink + Transport (void seeker) + Vision of the artifact + ShadowCleave (you spam press this shortcut all the game … it does 100 damage to all who surrounds Zeratul).
Alarak - weak and boring - same only 1 vial combination (mass void rays that are weaker then normal void rays - and do weak splash damage…) plus hero Alarak, who basically do some damage but push the enemies like a bull, and never dies because other weak units (supplicants) dies instead of him. And about voice: he thinks he is the best but he is not = lot of ego.
Dehaka - lot of life but too slow, and he does little damage. So imagine big almost unlimited life’s Godzilla that goes to the enemyand slap them like a little girl.
.
As with many of these types of questions, it depends on one’s preferences and play styles. I really do like Stetmann.
Hero unit is fun to play as. Super Gary and his E-Gorbs obliterate waves, and otherwise large chunks of HP. His P2, even more so.
His units are the usual templates (they mostly are for the most part), but have some nice twists like Lings being Immortal (literally as having their hardened shields), Hydras having an enhanced AA attack, MBCL having Broodling attack, Interceptor attack that can only hit ground, and their version of Yamata Cannon.
Stetzones is a novel mechanic. Helps you and your ally. It can do things not possible before. Blue speeds up combat units to retreat (especially nice vs. environmental mutators like Going Nuclear), intercept attack waves/objectives (most notably, on VP and getting to crystals and delivering them). Green is healing which is always useful. I’ve kept Dehaka and Tychus allies’ heroes from dying because of well places stetalites. Purple can be really fun with certain spell casters (esp. Vorazun, or restoring Medics’ energy).
Overcharging them further gives them utility, like green which mimics Nova’s Defensive Drones. Blue ups attack speed, so it’s neat to use to quickly gun down things when you don’t need to worry about taking damage in return (a void shard or Void Thrasher about to destroy an objective, or trains that are getting away). Purple overcharge… see purple zone above.
One bad thing is Stetalites can be bloody murder on lesser systems. Even on better systems, you can still expect lag (I have a 10th gen i7 and it’s something you can get through, even if not pleasant)
I’d probably get Abby or Alarak next. But I would warn you against Stetmann if you have a potato PC as you will lag a lot come endgame especially if you have Stukov with you.
I think Dehaka is a lot of fun Highly recommend. Positives:
wow, dehaka indeed requires skill to upgrade.
When I bought I wanted to gave up on him. I did not gave up just because I have all commanders all maps and all achievements
Dehaka and Alarak competes for Very bad design ever.
Bottom down or up: from your list I also recommend Stetmann.
Alternatively you got enough youtube videos to check how all commander is played. So try search for 1 hour and you will have an idea why Stetmann is so good and others not so fun.
I ended up going with Alarak partly because I’m finishing C&C Tiberium Wars and he reminds me of Nod.
I might check out Dehaka though. He sounds interesting but I liked the idea of Brood Wars Zerg more than Jurassic Park.
Sometimes when I’m bored, I like to place Imperial Witnesses next to all the Stetellites for more speed. Sadly I think the effect is additive so it’s only 120% faster instead of 140%.
My tip when starting out with Abathur is to just try and get your ultimate evos fast and always have at least 3-6 queens with some biomass. Then just stick to handling roaches, queens, mutalisks and vipers. Once you nail that comp down you can try to make some of the support units that counter the enemy comp like devourers for air, guardians vs. terran/protoss mech, guardians vs. terran/protoss mech, swarm hosts against zergling/scourge, and Ravagers if you want to sweat/trying to go P2.
Very hard disagree. His void rays are only popular because of his p3 where the real value is just the mothership itself. Instead you will get way more interesting results out of ascendent or robo builds. His immortal and colossus variants are both extremely powerful units for upfront A move style combat. His ascendents are on the other hand the most devastatingly powerful caster unit in coop after they’ve eaten a few supplicants for energy their psionic orb spam will decimate waves while the mind blast can one shot any non hybrid unit you come across and at maximum stacks they have 1000 shields making them nigh indestructible. ascendents are generally the optimal way to play alarak but his other builds are quite fun to use as both his robo bay units are objective nuking monsters His stalker is also capable of very deadly burst fire with double damage after blinking and of course he has the havoc as an excellent support unit for almost any commander’s forces. Plus 2 range on say Raynors marines drastically increases their fire density even without considering the havocs damage amplification.
Again you are clearly underestimating the variety of possible ways to play Zeratul without even looking at his prestiges all of his tob bar abilities besides the stasis beam are good at what they do. the void ray legion of course allows for the fastest expansion, flies, and hard counters armored units, the Zealot legion has whirlwind on the zealots plus a high templar casting psi storm making it an excellent counter to terran bio based comps as well as being very useful against most ground based zerg compositions and lastly the dark archon legion can stun enemy units with maelstrom and you can control any units they mind control. The void supression Crystal is a free win any fight button and is an excellent support tool for pushing into fortified areas like void shards by crippling all enemies inside its area (if you’ve taken zeratuls p1 you can use this and the void seekers super cloak ability to have 2 back to back win fight buttons if you need them) and the turret calldown is great for defensive maps but still has offensive utility with projection. Each of his passives are also good. steadfast reinforcements offers a large increase in the duration of your legion and avatar. Most useful with the avatar of essence allowing your armies to maintain the high level buff for much longer. The buff to shade projection for those who like mass cannon play. Especially useful on defensive maps when you inevitably need to move out to attack an area. and faster blink does not just impact zeratul but all of your units with a teleport. namely Stalkers and DT’s who both have a damage dealing component with their blink. This makes it a go to pick for builds relying on large numbers of stalkers the buff to zeratul’s mobility is also nice especially on p1 where you sacrifice his global teleport. The Avatar of Form sadly doesn’t get much use because the devolution wave from the avatar of essence is just insanely overpowered but it can still very effectively deal with swarmy enemy waves completely on its own. Terran Bio, Ling Bane, sky Zerg, and Sky Toss can all take big damage from this one. Lastly the Avatar of essence naturally grants you a huge attackspeed and durability buff on top of crippling the enemy with a de-evolution wave often turning half the enemies into workers.
Then his army composition has a good bit of variety you can choose from. Immortal Stalker Sentry is a good all rounder composition that can usually A move and do just fine. Good to have if your going p3 and are mostly focused on microing zeratul. Mass DT has excellent offensive power against ground targets with built in death prevention and blinking through a wave can vaporize it even faster than vorazun. outside of that his DT’s do massive damage with their attack to objectives very great to have on maps like dead of night or void thrashing. there is also of course mass cannon strategies which are always good on defense oriented maps and don’t cost supply with shade projection giving his cannons a unique ability to be wherever you need them to on demand and they also benefit from attack and armor upgrades unlike all other defenses. the last main composition I use is immortal disruptor sentry combining devastating ground AOE with a heavy durable frontline anti air. his other utility includes no supply detection with extremely large vision radius when in observation mode and the ability to move his army instantly anywhere with the warp prisms for only 1 supply. all of his tools makes for quite a diverse set of playstyles despite his limited unit composition and lack of base management.
this one is a joke right? Dehaka in the late game is even stronger than Kerrigan capable of pumping out insane damage numbers with his scorching breath and leap attacks on top of his ability to insta kill any unit from long range. Not to mention if he eats a psionic unit he nukes everything around him basically one shotting anything nearby. His damage output aside he can completely neuter attack waves with his roar and provides passive detection and healing to nearby allied units and is extremely tanky to boot.
So you agree that Alarak is not so flexible He has 1 max 2 strategies.
This is not so powerful. Tychus shredder grenade do more damage and more precise.
Not to mention Zagara-s Banelings (quite the same but more powerful).
Never tried, and never saw on others videos.
But stars need to be aligned for this … I mean this is a rare ocasion.
