Now after the last announcement… I wonder, what’s next for the Starcraft franchise?
I love this universe and the games. They were among the first pc games I played and loved on PC… I would really like to see more of it in the future.
So what do you think, what could come next? Will it be another RTS game and a SC3 or something new?
Also, what kind of genre would fit better the SC universe?
Emptiness of the Void.
Legacy of the void, won’t be a good legacy. It should be legacy of the swarm. What will aliens think of us, once civilization is dead and they will discover this game in an ancient ruins. They will be at first like - pog RTS and than after week playing against sh and protoss they will quit the game and say: no wonder they are extinct.
Jokes aside… I think whatever will they think to do with SC, it might be announced or at least hinted at the next years Blizzcon, i mean Blizzcon of nov 2021, it’s plenty of time to think what to do with it, that if they already didn’t do that and they are maybe already working on some new SC project and now just want to focus more on it.
Starcraft game, in 8-9 years.
As I said on another thread, a turn based game 4X ,like Stellaris, Sins of a solar empire, Endless space,…would be perfect for the starcraft universe because there are already a fan base for those space titles and Blizz would have the advantage of already having 4 factions, lore, characters,a world/galaxy and still could having rts battles.
I think until 2023-24 we won’t hear anything, maybe in two years they will have some kind of plan, calculated the cost…all that stuff, then they must create the story, probably starting a new graphic engine, and some years later maybe they will announce they have some basic build that they are working on, then pre alpha, alpha, beta…that stuff requires a lot of time, at least 5 years for a good title.
Skin sets left without Structure skins:
Leviathan zergs
Primal zergs
Golden Age protoss
Purifier protoss
Mira’s Marauders terrans
Umojan terrans
If they don’t want to, but better word will be can’t, complete that task, pretty sure there is no any new SC project. Skins themselfs are SC2 project and they simply abondon it half way to completion.
Despite the stupid Warchest model, i’ve been waiting and hoping to have structures for Leviathans, Umojans and Purifiers, even tho my main is Protoss. This is now frustrating enough to abondon game. Unless Blizz will wake up and finish the task which is undone.
I am still willing to pay higher price for those structure skins…
Two years of e-sports as we know it, less the Warchests. Map becoming more varied and complex. Co-op and campaign users slowly decreasing. Then the community evolving to a model close to BW’s one, with less tournaments, but auto-funded, with the different e-sport streamers possibly federating to managed those.
And after an undefined interval, a new game.
SC3 will be an RTS, the only question are how many new features it will have compared to SC2 (hero units in particular).
The SC universe could delve into other genres, the canceled SC Ghost and Heroes of the Storm are an example ; but considering how many franchises Blizzard/Activision already has, and how unlikely they are to bet on entirely new concepts, it’s probable they will continue the current genres being carried by their respectives series (WoW for MMORPG, OW for FPS, SC for RTS etc.) .
As for what’s next, well Diablo IV ; then the question will be if they go for an experimental Warcraft IV for the RTS genre, or start SC3’s development.
Meeting Amon lol …
They’re pulling out my guy. There won’t be anymore new content forever.
I think the best route would be to have multiple games with different genres in the SC universe.
I can see this types of games fitting for SC:
A FPS game
A Stealth game
A card game (for mobile maybe)
And of course a RTS game.
But for the RTS, I would like it to be a new generation RTS, a total overhaul or evolution of the classic RTS forumla. Or even maybe a combination of multiple genres like RTS with RPG and MOBA elements, with a stronger focus on hero units and a more passive control of the armies, buildings and their tactics.
Honestly I don’t have a lot of hope for SC2 under Activision’s control.
Make no mistake, Blizzard doesnt exist anymore - Activision has been closing Blizzard offices and firing Blizzard devs.
If, If we see anything for SC3… Its going to be under a microscope - and Activision’s track record isn’t good.
According to Artosis, there is no one left at Blizzard that designs RTS games. That would mean StarCraft 3 is at best 6 years away, if it is even going to exist.
In an era where people are getting more and more hyped on buying $1,000+ GPUs, there is less desire to play a game that is single-core CPU bottlenecked. The RTS genre is dead.
this is real time strategies actually(in multiplayer)
Turn based isnt real-time
Yes, but some of those games have real time battles, see the total war series and there was a space game that I don’t remember the name that also had a big RTS element.
they not turn based in multiplayer.
i mean stellaris and sins of solar empire real time strategies. u have active pause in single player, but multiplayer playing real time
This doesn’t necessarily mean Blizzard won’t hire or doesn’t have already people interested enough in this genre that would like to try a new RTS and do something different this time maybe, a new generation RTS. I personally believe that the future SC RTS would be (and has to be) a very different one from SC2, not as SC2 was basically an evolution or tech upgrade to SC1, but more of a reinvention and redefinition of the genre with the new technologies and the new audiences in mind.
I envision a mixture or fusion of genres like an RTS with Moba/ActionRPG elements, with a stronger focus on hero/commander units and less need to totally control your armies or base, that could be delegated more to AI where you can maybe decide some tactics in advance, the builds order, tech progression etc, but the focus I think should shift more on the battlefield, where the real action happens.
