Please describe the things you like in Coop gameplay.
I wouldn’t say I’m addicted, as I play it on and off.
As for what I enjoy:
-Co-operative PvE environment where getting cheesed/rushed isn’t ever a factor.
-Getting to play around with units and upgrades that aren’t available in Ladder style play.
-Different maps with different mechanics, most of which are based on various Campaign missions.
-Alarak.
Please don’t listen to terry
I got bored, did coop for achievements, in the long process of it all built a habit… now it is just part of life… I call it life but it really is an addiction.
I need help…. No I don’t… yes I do…
I enjoy interacting with someone else on my side. Jerks are on the minority.
—“Glorified comp stomp”
Somebody described Coop as just that. In the Sc1 days, I used to love just firing up a comp stomp in 4v4c, 3v5, or 2v6 fashions
—no backstabbing
“The only enemies are allies”. Such a bs line. I didn’t care for unallying in team games and then going after each other. I just want to play the damn game, not deal with that sort of “meta politicking”. Whether or not this was intended, I didn’t enjoy it and ended up quitting those games anyways.
Coop has no friendly fire and no way to unally, but you can still troll and attack each other if not careful. I’ve suggested coop to some folks on the internet, and a few of them were excited to bs their allies. Not much you can do about that, but with some of those features in place, at least their options are limited. And the community of gamers overall is nice
—Games are streamlined
Starting off with 12 workers, trimmed down tech trees and roster of units, and various QoL improvements keep things moving along
—Games are relatively quick
Most games finish in 16 to 25 minutes of “Brutal time”. While I had a lot of fun in some of the epic 1 to 4 hour Arcade/Use Map Settings games… individual games running shorter is nice flexibility
—fun abilities NOT in Versus/Ladder
CD (call downs), hero units, special abilities like special strains of Zerg, buffed units (e.g. 20% cheaper, or +50% hp), 0-build time structures, and other slew of campaign abilities add a unique flair to the mode
—extension of campaign
Coop is essentially arcade mode of campaign
—Still overall balanced
There even comps and stuff that aren’t “go to” or even preferred can be explored. For example, BCs and Carrs have their place and are strong, but are hardly something worth rushing towards each and every game. Another is powerful units can have their counters (e.g. mass Reapers to anti-swarmy enemies)
—multiplayer is the best of both worlds
You’re force to play with one other player. This broadens your horizon getting paired with other COs and players’ play styles to potentially create a new experience every time. OTOH, you only have to find one other player, so that’s about as simple as it gets for MP matchmaking. Contrast that to other games, or other Sc2 modes where games require 3 to 16 people at a time to play.
—Get in a game quickly
It’s still popular enough that you can queue for regular Brutal and expect to get into a game in 5 to 30 seconds
—community is overall nice
I’ve had games where I, my ally, or both of us **** up. No blaming and finger pointing. We shrug it off, perhaps learn from it, and chat a “gg anyways”
—Mutators and Mutations add variety
Some or downright nasty, but these offer some nice variety in gameplay, forcing you to think outside the box at times, while nullifying common strategies in some cases.
—leveling up isn’t a total grindfest
And believe you me, I’ve played a few “freemium” games on mobile, so I know just how awful they can get. Imagine winning a mission as Raynor, but instead of getting 40K XP, you instead get 10K of Kerrigan XP, 10K of HH XP, and 5K of Tychus XP. Don’t own the latter 2? Well, you can redeem your XP for those COs… if you buy them. Meanwhile, you got no XP for Raynor that game!
I used to be able to level up COs from lv1 to lv15 in one weekend with +100% XP boosts. That’s no more, but a few days of playing will still get your there. At least there’s still an end to sight.
+1 for this.
Though in all seriousness I play it because it is so replayable especially when they added masteries and prestiges, giving you a lot of stuff to mix and match. Very (VERY) Casual gamer friendly and it’s still easy to pick up even after not playing it for a while. A real big shame Blizz dropped the ball on it.
The fact that you win by default, unless something go really wrong.
Rather, that’s why I can play coop again and again, but can’t finish getting achievements in stuff in Campaign, where you lose by default unless lots of things go right (“lose” include failing getting achievements, and that GREATLY increase the range, much more than including the bonus objectives in coop for “win”)
It’s chill. Yet between the varying enemy composition and going random map there’s a lot more variability than replaying a campaign mission plus there’s some social interaction.
Never played StarCraft on the ladder. I did play some Warcraft 3 ladder in the past and was halfway decent back in the day. But I got full time work, a wife, and 10 month old son these days. I like to enjoy RTS games in settings that aren’t hyper competitive.
Even though co-op isn’t hyper competitive, you can still sharpen your timings, and get a sense of how you are playing.
I’m an achievement chaser in any game I play.
All I have left are the Ascension achievements, so I’m on that grind at the moment. After that, I’ll probably pull back a little and casually finish the prestiges I have left.
Prestiges are what keeps me here, if it weren’t for that, I would play this game like once in weeks.
It’s just the sheer ammount of strategies to play coop is what keeps me here, even if they aren’t the most effective.
