Was protoss ever balanced or even weak? Back in WoL they were so broken they stopped me from going pro. Now they are literally game-killing broken. Were they ever not like this?
Probably always since the best race was always Z, when KR players were at their peak it was clear that a foreigner playing Z would have a bigger chance of beating KR players. Z always had good units while P more powerful stuff was nerfed over the time,only the cheese of the month was that kept the race alive during tournaments.
I remember some time with overpowered P after lotv,but then the race got nerfed again.

Historically protoss has been weak vs zerg and it’s only fairly recently that they’ve had a period of consistent strength in the match up.
Vs terran, protoss has varied from slightly favored to balanced with terran complaints focusing on “ease of use”.
At the highest levels Protoss performance has been extremely inconsistent with protoss frequently subject to exploitive proxy/1base builds from terran and ravager play from zerg.

A good question. The skill floor has always been super low with a-clicking, cannon rushes and proxy builds.
Without batteries and old economy, proxies werr not that low skill floor, it was a pretty risky strat that could be countered as long it was scouted,something that should happen in most of the games due to the game having lower eco and more time to scout things. And the rest is similar to Z strat during early-midgames mass two types of units and aclick,lose army,remax,aclick and win,that was Z gameplay for years until the game was changed and Z complained that they had to play lile protoss lategame with several key units.

From the beginning of SC1 the game was designed to make one race seem impressive when it wins, and the other 2 designed for noobs to play them and get free wins.

You mean a foreigner like stephano? Guy won ipl and nasl yet couldn’t even make it out of code s groups. If the difference is that big why does it matter if foreigner zergs are more likely to pull upsets when even the best korean zergs performed terribly without bl-infestor? (with the notable exception of life)
And zerg was the worst race in hots, from having to deal with msc enhanced immortal sentry all-ins (high ground vision, 2 time warp, recall) to boosted hellbat drops and bio mine, zerg might as well have gotten nothing in hots multiplayer and it wouldn’t have made much difference.
It was low enough for Maximusblack to get GM with protoss, so…
Cheesing is always the lowest skill option,that applies for every race,and getting GM is “easy” if you grind a lot of games when you lack of overall skill because if you reach top M eventually you will enter into the lowest part of GM thanks to low population/other players not playing,remember how GM was changed to avoid those guys entering and getting GM spots as soon as they could before better players played their games.
And about the strats and cheeses,people could get GM with proxy raxes,stim pushes and even some zerg did a bronze to GM series with slowlings.In the end its all about having a cheese,hit the timing,and grind the ladder.
People (streamers) who play several hours per day and many per week is not rare for them to reach GM even if they are not particularly good because over time they will get faster and getting low GM is not exactly the same as being a world champion, you can get GM with lower than 5,5k mmr, thsts only 1k mmr more than top diamond/low master.
I don’t really see the issue to be honest. Whenever I play it’s usually fine unless I make a lot of mistakes (i.e. using the wrong unit comp wave after wave after wave)
Protoss seems fine to me at least in platinum league and around there. I’ll post again when I reach masters/GM though!! I am interested to see more opinions and thoughts! Thanks SC2 family
This guy basically admits that speed=skill in LOTV expansion…what I’ve been saying all along…a speedy cheese fest …rush zerglings every game “I’m better than you!!!” LOL bad meta…when will it FINALLY dawn on you guys that the game was better before 2016?
It wasn’t, heart of the swarn ended being extremely boring,lotv brought new stuff and overall the game is better now.

At LotV release they were underpowered
In 2017 Protoss could lose from 2 base all in but also could drag the game to long. It was OK back then, when with less skill you do 55% and another 1 K games later from 2018 you lose from toss having under 45% WR, you know they are broken or at least if you dont master 1 or higher Terran it is difficult to play TvP. The biggest proof for me was when I do 9 of 10 or 10/10 oracle kills above my workers but the patch 2018 came and some oracle could come before my mine was ready… thats how broken protoss was in 2018 early on with the chrono buff. Things got better over the past years but design is still the same crap making TvP an uphill for T.
Protoss has rarely been broken?
In WoL; Protoss had a huge, huge disadvantage against allins.
In HotS by the end it was almost impossible to play Protoss because of mass ravens/nydus swarm host in the late game.
LotV was essentially the only period of time where Protoss was broken - but every race has had their turn at the imbalance wheel during LotV.
Terrans had Liberators which were not only bugged (the bad devs wouldn’t even check the stats of the damned unit even with the mass complaints until it was like…6+ months after the bug happened) but also so overpowered that they’re now the most nerfed unit in all of StarCraft history.
Zerg had that period where they were given back BL Infestor/Super Nydus allins…and we all know how that turned out (mega NERFS).
Protoss had ‘Release’ Carriers, pre-nerf Tempests and Adepts which 2 shot Marines (which was only op vs bio or die trying Terran players).
So yeah; pretty sure you’re trolling. P.S. ib4 the toxic Lowko video callout. Dude; grow up.
At the start of LotV Protoss were 28% of GM. Zerg is currently 22% and has been as low as 19%. Protoss stayed <33% of GM for about a year and a half. Zerg has been at <33% for 3 years. Protoss being that low in GM would happen in every 0.25% of scenarios assuming a balanced game. Zerg being that low in GM would happen in 0.0001% of scenarios (literally 2500x less likely to happen than Protoss’s lowest performance).
Let’s be crystal clear: Protoss has never been anywhere near where Zerg is currently.
ok so you prefer a version of the game where every map Blizzard allows you to use has three entrances to the main base (probably four for the natural), bad looking creep, zerg can safely open with three hatcheries…opponent is basically Serral/Scarlett from the 5-10 minute mark. Playing against zerg hasn’t been fun since pre-2016 and playing against protoss ALSO hasn’t been fun since early 2019…how are you guys still worshipping this god awful expansion and era of SC2??? The expansion that literally killed the game…also for all of you “durr WOL sucked!!!” trolls guess what 2018-2019 was also a brood lord/infestor era. LOTV had ALL the problems WOL had and then some more as well. After 12-worker start, lurker/viper era, adept and void ray rushes, and battlecruiser tactical jump the player base literally dropped by 50%…maybe YOU think LOTV is better but about 6/10 players disagree with you, have already uninstalled the game, and aren’t even here to talk about it anymore.
Wol had barely usable units,bad tanks,bad medivacs,no regen mutas,less viable hellions(no hellbat),worse bc…
Hots improved the game a bit,but it wasn’t enough and at the end of hots the game was really boring with swarmhosts.
What brough lotv (and during its life)?
Core units changes,ravager,unit that made roaches less useless.
Power distributed aling robo units.
Dirsuptor,unpopular opinion,but the unit is not bad at all because P needs aoe due to collo having less damage.
Raven being more useful and balanced afrer some changes.
Lurker, a ground siege weapon for Z.
Liberator,decent mech unit that fills a role.
Cyclone,good early unit.
Vipers got parabomb.
Lotv is by far better than wol and hots, you could say that most of the units are viable in some way,and even during some games you will see the entire tech tree,something that didn’t happen during wol or hots .
