Using Co-op Commanders in Melee games

So this is what I found out recently, you can play your favourite co-op commander against computer AI in Melee maps.

So go to Custom > Melee > Pick any map then press “Create with Mod” (Button at the bottom) select Co-op Mod (I selected All Stars: Co-op mod PvP by KingCobra).
Select you favourite commanders, prestige and masteries.

For enemy setting this is what you do.
Fill empty Team 2 with A.Is, set the difficulty, Make sure to set the race, won’t work (Strangely against 7 enemies only 6 will work).

I used Dehaka against 6 Cheater difficulty A.I in Mar Sara Waste map and needless to say I wipe the floor with them.

Have fun!

Anyone remember when people cried for a “ladder-like” commander? That’s exactly what happens and why it doesn’t work in coop lmao.

You’d have to balance a ladder commander option with some sort of significant head start in the macro. Be it a fully saturated main, some tier 1 units, a pool / rax / gate to start off.

Ladder options can do okay in co op at 200/200 supply but they don’t have that hero unit / top bar option to get them through the early game.

For demonstration purpose I didn’t wait for enemies to build up their army enough, they can muster more size-able army with more time (Although they still aren’t a match).

Well, considering the average damage output of calldowns/heroes by 5min mark, it would be crazy to have anything competitive as a pseudo-ladder CO.

At best these kind of COs work by having an optimal counter unit and take minimal loss. At worst they lose entire army and momentum. Compare that to current COs… they lose what… a free calldown? A respawn-able hero?

It just isn’t the same and it was obvious. I had a laugh as your Dehaka took a leisure stroll through several camps lol.

hm…I’ll have to try that when I get off work, thanks! Do you get “XP” and get decals/portraits like regular melee games, I wouldn’t be surprised if you did–I can finally max out my “Race levels” lol

I don’t think so mate, This is an ‘arcade’ not an official ladder.

Yeap that’s why its so satisfying. It’s a real Power Rush.

well…considering you go to “melee” not “arcade” you should get levels for the race of your choice for a max of…50 I believe? My protoss is 32, Terran is 25 something, and Zerg is…19 lol.

Go to your profile and under “Race levels” it’ll say your level, FYI.

it could be balanced, but it’d need a lot of work and you’d probably need to get rid of all hero units and calldowns or at least make them crazy expensive with long build times.

Yeah agreed, but that’d also change coop mode into something entirely different than what it is now.

I think it’d have to be two separate entities basically, you can keep Co-op the same, but you’d need a “Commanders Versus” which completely changes how co-op commanders play out in a PvP setting. Trying to get co-op commanders to work and be fun in co-op while also being balanced in PvP would impossible without major sacrifices that would either make co-op boring and or make all commanders become very similar to one another, so you’re just better off completely separating the two from one another.

I’ve actually hosted a couple tournaments using this mod. For competitive play you need to put in a few house rules such as pick ban phase for commanders, setting a peace timer ( in lobby settings) and disallowing hero and top bar abilities within the main and naturals. Here is a link for a KOH I administered using this mod. (its youtube but due to links not being allowed I can’t post the hyperlink) watch?v=PiWu2YoXPUw&list=PLWIRRgIfniFvHcTbOy6cCs0X9VVk3s35x

Note that the mod initially mentioned in this topic is THE ONE that try to give you the real co-op commanders in melee.
There’s no need or point to discuss about “balance” or stuff like that, because that’s what other mods do, by adding resource costs to calldowns or other changes.

Also, last time I tried, the AI needed to be pushed at a very high level of difficulty, or it would naturally be weaker than ordinary AI (and commanders are already OP enough without that, even for me “Casual/Normal player”)
