Upcoming Mutation - Railroad Switch - Is it winnable without any sort of cheating?

Mutators are Just Die and Polarity on Oblivion Express.

I recently played it a couple times with a friend and we lost both times pretty bad, it reminds me of Memorable Boss(Heroes from the Storm + Moment of Silence on Void Launch) in terms of difficulty. We’re both pretty good players, we managed to beat the last mutation on Scythe of Amon with Just Die + Polarity and got all 3 bonuses as well on our 2nd try.

Blizzard recently changed how Polarity works on Oblivion Express, it used to be that most of the trains received around 50/50 immunity now they’re 100% immune to one player and switch after revive.

I think Blizzard may have created this mutation before changing how Polarity works.

Has anyone given this a try yet? Anyways… should be an interesting week when this mutation hits.

so far there has not been a single mutation that is “not winnable”, and i do not think railroad switch will be the first

Likely it’ll come down to counter picking the right commanders, better level many up ;D

It’ll be annoying having to juggle the units and the trains. Especially if both trains spawn locked to one player.

Memorable Boss has been soloed. Railroad Switch duo is nothing compared to that.

I’ve practiced dragoon reaver build on this mission that I’m confident for my train damage. I believe every commander have a super high dps unit, just mass that and stay together. You need to push far into the top left before the third wave so that you can immediately engage the double spawn killing the top one first, then it shouldn’t be too hard.

Polarity is still super annoying though.

I’d say the hardest part will be doing it on random queue.

Already won twice, so definitely doable. I probably have to scale brutation carry to hardtation carry because the DPS required to clear trains is still insane.

There’s a Chinese video who finished as Nova and Zeratul you may want to watch.

I finally found a good ally and we just won after a few hours of trying we ended up winning as Nova + Zeratul vs a non Terran ground comp, also thanks for the video.

Memorable Boss last I checked can only be soloed by exploiting a bug which is cheating, if you have a video of someone soloing memorable boss without cheating can you provide a link?

Are you implying that soloing Memorable Boss is easy because of the hero spawn exploit?

Not at all. I didn’t think your point was relevant because it involved some kind of cheating, The context of this thread is non cheating which is why I put it in the title.

Why do I sense either you or Yuri will post a solo vid (polarity tho) on this mutation soon, haha. Also, imagine cold is the void + just die solo.

They’ve fixed the ‘heroes from the storm’ to still spawn even if you kill all buildings now. The video of doing that mutation by killing all spawn buildings is no longer valid.

This mutation is easy if your partner leave.
Easiest combo is you play tychus and leaver play kerrigan.
Omega worm help tychus rotate around map to destroy train.
Kerrigan’s hydra, ling, lurker have too high dps to destroy train.

I think I’ll have to side with LilArrin on this one, as I think his point is quite relevant in determining whether or not “Railroad Switch” is winnable (which is what you’re complaining about in the first place). “Cheating” has nothing to do with it. His point that “Memorable Boss was solo’d, Railroad Switch duo is much easier than this” is quite correct – as you yourself have proven when you say you beat the mutation.

You seem quite fixated on the “fact” that LilArrin’s method involved "cheating”. It is a very debatable topic whether or not bug abuse really constitutes “cheating” (I don’t think it’s worth arguing over something this tangential) but I’m not going to get into this with you because it’s heavily subjective and off-topic besides. I’m just trying to say that LilArrin is right when he says soloing Memorable Boss is much harder than duo Just Die! + Polarity – which is very relevant to determining whether or not this mutation is “winnable.”

Memorable Boss requires that you keep track of several things such as dealing with Moment of Silence (by far the most broken mutator), taking down shuttles while avoiding the heroic-heavy escorts (this constitutes a heavy portion of the difficulty), maintaining the spawncamp and keeping it safe from shuttle escorts that have 3+ heroes, and doing all of this without a single mistake. Not to mention additional steps I excluded for the sake of brevity. While abusing the bug would tone down the difficulty, it still didn’t stop the mutation from crushing those who failed to keep up with the steps. Knowledge and exploitation of the bug wasn’t enough to stop Memorable Boss from being ranked the most difficult mutation of all time, as this mutation featured several, and I mean several, ways to foil the spawncamping attempts, which is very likely what caused people so many headaches.

Let me put it simply: it’s quite telling of Memorable Boss’s difficulty when even “cheating” isn’t enough to knock it down from being rated as the most difficult mutation of all time. When so many people report having difficulty, and declare it the most difficult mutation, even despite the bug being available, and even despite using the bug, it should tell you how difficult Memorable Boss is.

Railroad Switch is much simpler, because you don’t have to deal with Moment of Silence and there is a much lower quantity of heroic units. The only thing you have to keep track of are trains and their escorts, none of which silence you for 14 seconds (seriously? why is this considered okay) for killing them. If previous Just Die! + Polarity mutations are any indication (such as Together Forever and Die Together, Die Together arguably being harder than Together Forever), they are much less difficult if we’re going by mutation difficulty ranking, as well as number of people who said they beat it. Railroad Switch doesn’t hold a candle to Memorable Boss in terms of difficulty, so LilArrin remains correct.

So to answer your original complaint of whether or not Railroad Switch is “winnable”: yes it is. And LilArrin’s point is an excellent and relevant reason on why this is the case.

Couldn’t have said it better, myself @Spokhy :+1:t2:

Ive already beat the Brutation like 3 times with a buddy doing custom mutations, once with Void Templar and Dark Templar, once with Vultures+Marines and MechaLurkers+MechaHydras, and once with Swann Tanks+Cyclones and Nova Liberators+Tanks

Its really just a matter of giting gud and learning to actually talk to and coordinate with your ally.

Ohh hey look, here’s one of the guys I beat the brutation with.

Nitrous is correct. If you want to greatly increase your chances of success vs a polarity + just die mutation… You gotta do two things:

Constantly communicate

And

Constantly coordinate

There are lots of options. You can queue up with a friend. You can use discord voice / Skype / etc. You can pause the game over and over to discuss things and coordinate your next move.

If you use the matchmaking system to play a mutation that’s entire challenge comes from forced, constant teamwork… well, that’s doable, but you’re undoubtedly going to have a tougher time. If you like that, for the added challenge, great. If you don’t like that, use one of the tools mentioned above (and try not to complain too much about using matchmaking for a mutation like this when you have plenty of other options / tools to utilize).

The whole challenge from polarity + just die is the fact that it literally forces constant, consistent communication and coordination for the entire duration of the mission. It puts the “co” in co-op.
