The recent post about void rays brought up an interesting point on how the stacking ability of air units contributes to unique scaling of their damage and balance issues. I’m wondering what people’s thoughts are if air units were prevented from stacking.
I think it would make certain ground units more appealing. I usually don’t build many Thor’s or ultras late game because I get tired of watching them bumble around each other without doing damage due to their large collision size. I realize that air units can operate in a 3d space and could stack, while ground units essentially exist in a 2d plane, but when has physics determined what game okay mechanics blizzard wants to implement.
I think it might lead to a more dynamic late game because you can’t keep your air fleet tightly clumped together so you’d have to skirmish more on the edges. It may also inadvertently buff GtA units and nerf AtG damage since they would be fighting in more equal numbers.
I guess conceptually I just want to see how the (non toxic members of the) community thinks it would alter game play, for better or for worse.

That would be a nerff in disguise to Storm. Why not digest the current protoss nerffs and huge terran buffs? Time for further protoss nerffs has not yet come, maybe next patch they will nerff Zealot and HT.
I didn’t want to single you out by name, but when I said non toxic people I was mostly referring to you. Not everything on this forum is an underhanded attempt to ruin your TvP matchup.

Well it is way to risky to make them unstackable since they currently being in that kind of balance if you would change it the whole concept of air units need to be buffed to a point where you can take on like 20 marines with 1 capital ship because they would block each other or be other wise to weak
while i don’t think they should have zero collision size
they certainly would need much smaller than the modell size of the units itself to hold up even just a bit
i am pretty sure blizzard will not touch this subject outside of a giant project which would be rather sc3 than just an sc2 patch and even that i would doubt
I think it would make for better game play. I am not going to say it’s a problem or balance issue, necessarily, but it has always seemed strange that a mass of Vikings, Mutas, or Void Rays, can be nearly wiped out completely or made obsolete by one or two Storms or Fungals, all because units stack too closely.

It wil break the balance because Protoss relies heavily on AOE to make for the lack of Anti-Air firepower on ground and air (Stalkers suck, Archons are even more irrelevant due to the 80% buff that EMP got and Carriers were nerffed togather with useless units like Voids/Tempests). Terrans have plenty of power in GtA and AtA department.
Unless you let Storm have the current AOE Radius and extend the (only against air) Radius to 3. That would balance the change that you proposed and would insert changes on how the fights would develop.
