Greetings. I would like to know how people feel on the idea of ‘unit formations’ in SC2.
I personally think formations fit in RTS games, but I’ve a suspicion its a bad idea for SC2 due to the nature of this particular game. If formations had been brought in at the start of WoL, I’d be fine with it. But now, 10 years later, I’m thinking its perhaps a bad idea… Like it will alter the meta to a ludicrous degree. And Blizz might need to buff splash damage. DUNNO.
Honestly, I am both worried and excited for this particular idea. Thoughts?

Units formations are bad because they literally disabling the micromanagement in the battles. It’s clearly visible in some other FPS games wich allow you to make units formations. They also wouldn’t fit into SC2. Imagine marines pre-splited constant movement VS banelings or pre-splited zerglings a-move into siege tank / widow mines line. Not to mention it would make AoE spellcasters useless. Whole game would need a heavy rebalance after implementing the unit formations.

As you mentioned, we are kind of too far to introduce this into the game, but I see all the changes that would imply as pros than cons.
Massive balancing changes on Protoss core units that doesn’t have spells to have a chance against Terran, changes to Zerg to balance with Protoss changes, maybe even bring back the Firebat to Terran.
With this wide open maps would be viable just like Brood War and fights would be far more tactical, better concaves, less death balls.
The only con is that would be another game, but Imo, WoL, HotS and LotV are all different games, it’s about time for something fresh.

The way I understood it, unit formations are something people can put into their arcade games, not something players can utilize on the ladder.
