The problem with AoE4 and RTS

Is that they don’t realize people want a game like WC3 or SC2 except at least resembling balance, not something completely different but still RTS. The AoE4 design is just not good or fun, similar to how the overwhelming majority think that an RTS where you don’t need to do manual harvesting, deal with a black minimap or only select 12 units because the devs unironically think it prevents deathballing is better than an RTS where you do have to do those things.

It’s not that people want a completely different game, it’s that they want terran to have a chance against zerg. Nobody wants to watch maru outplay reynor 10 times over and still predictably lose while casters try their hardest to make it seem like it’s somewhat close or that maru has a fighting chance. Even in games where terran was successful in dealing damage and had an amazing early game, it still looked completely hopeless after zerg massed up to the ling bane ultra a-move comp after being left alone for a minute. Zerg needs to be beatable in order for the game to succeed. Mech is completely undoable because even if your 200/200 maxed out army is extremely strong against ground, all the zerg needs to do is take the map easily, drone up, and counter your army with SH, neural, ultras, mass viper, ultra viper, even mass ling bane if you don’t have enough hellbats. Killing 40 workers means NOTHING if you didn’t end the game and let them tech up into swarmhosts. Nobody wants to watch more ZvZ it’s so dull just like playing protoss. If you have bad balance in a game then winning can’t be satisfying because it’s so easy and doesn’t feel challenging at all. If the game wasn’t completely imbalanced… the ladder would be way different and maru + clem + byun + the other terrans wouldn’t have been stomped by zerg. If pool first roach wasn’t completely overpowered (because you can drone up behind it and get yourself into a winning position literally just by doing it, regardless of how your opponent responds) people wouldn’t do it… but it clearly is, so they do. Same with TvT tank drop rush which can win the game instantly unless you have 300 apm and perfect ping while your opponent’s micro and skill just don’t matter when the strategy hands them a free win automatically. But instead we get a ladder where everyone does the most disgustingly abusive strategy designed to beat players who are better than them, in every matchup. How is the game better because a probe can harass your scv while it’s building the barracks, then on top of it you have to worry about cheeses that are literally so low counterplay when they take place that it proves people who balance games don’t know anything about it, pros who play the most underpowered race would do a way better job. Z and P cheeses objectively can end the game. Terran can’t do any cheese in TvZ or TvP and end the game because if you play properly you are utterly unkillable as protoss and nearly unkillable as zerg.

It’s not esports, chat, tournaments, promotion of the game, clans, co-op, singleplayer, 4v4, 3v3, 2v2, bad ways to lose (there are but that’s just part of imbalance) that made the game die, it’s just balance.

The main thing that chased me away is how fast lotv is in wol i had time to stop and think to myself what should i doo next or what is the only way i can lose from this position hots was faster but i adjusted with time lotv though was omg i stopped for 1 sec to think and didn’t click its gg so 3 to 4 games exhaust me and i was like i wanna play more but not this game.

That feeling eventually turned to rage and i even felt bad when i win so now i mostly don’t play it 1 or 2 games a month sometimes week but yea war 3 was good, game had its problems but most of the time i felt like i was in control and i lost cause opponent was smarter than me not the same in sc2 it was oh he is faster gg i guess

I like aoE4, but besides that, a lot of good points. However, I’d tone down the brick walls of text.

I would say you mean mechanics. A micro/macro intensive game (it can be War3 intensive if not too much like SC2) that averages 15-20 min a game. I think the lowest Grubby has made is some rush for 10 mins but this game AOE4 reminds me of my fave, the only civilization strategy game I like that is Empire Earth - where going through all ages takes around 15+ hours. In other words: You cant make such of AOE4 games or alike.

Even EE is more interesting than AOE because when I see these historical games I’d rather play EE with all the tech and eras, not these horses and towers all the time, which is impossible to make a competitive game of, when so many diff units are involved.

Maybe Frostgiant will do that… knowing what game we expect. It may disappoint casuals that may again get scared it is too hard to play it… but if it is found better than playing a race like the unforgiving mistakes of Terran, then it may be still liked

I do wish they kept the different expansion ladders.

They kept them for a while, eventually they were pretty dead and filled with smurfs. I known it well because I used these old ladders to farm clueless players,ez wins because their level was extremely low,so I reached a point in which every game was against another smurf and there was no player base so to play a normal game I had to wait ten minutes, not worth playing a worse game and waiting a 10 minute queue only to play a same or higher skill player,if I wanted that I could olay normal ladder with a queue of 15s.

i wish my zvt had a positive ratio… how do you beat terran again?

The moment LotV was released, all the good players left. I think it was just beating up on diamond/low masters + purelegacy. Wasn’t worth playing and forced me to switch to an expansion I didn’t like or quit SC2 altogether. LotV was a bigger mistake than swarmhosts.

Seriously.l IEM gave u plenty of hints

The problem with rts is esports. Esporters only ask for nerfs, which add nothing of value to the game.
