The Overmind Commander

I hope he’s next. I really want to see that original SC 1 brood in action. I want to see him play exactly like how the Starcraft 1 zerg played, with the Hydralisk den not requring a lair, Lurkers being your lair tech option, with Scourge and the Og flying queen’s that had ensnare and spawn broodling.

Defilers from the hive, along with Guardians and devourers. I wanna see the creep Colony’s back that can turn into Spore and Sunken Colony’s. an old way to spread creep and pop up defensive structures since they did both at the same time. That was a lot of fun and would really differentiate the overmind from the other Zerg commanders with just the colonies alone.

I’d also like to see something with the Hunter Killers since some of the Overmind’s cerebrates have had them as part of their army. I know Zagara can spawn a few in but I’d like to see a way for them to be created (Maybe the Overmind occasionally pops out a few free ones) that are permanent instead of having that duration.

Oh, and Maybe the Overmind could utilize those heroic named zerg units from the sc 1 campaign.

  • Blade Guardian (ultralisk)
  • Devouring One (zergling)
  • Devours Children (zergling)
  • Eschueta the Wicked (infested terran)
  • Frayne the Feral (hydralisk)
  • Gilson the Evil (guardian)

I support this, to a fair extent because I would love to see the Overmind back as an announcer.

He/it could get the Defiler back too, though Dark Swarm would need a nerf.

A list of unique units and structures are only a start. Need to have a central mechanic and/or distinctive designs that binds it together along with other necessities like calldowns, masteries and level upgrades. The units and structures would also need to do something interesting themselves too.

The Overmind primary made his celebrates do all his bidding, so I would imagine a Overmind commander should act the same way; a very macro intensive commander with an array of top bar abilities to spam. You could give him a dozen celebrates to build and upon buying one they could automatically launch attacks and build particular units. One Celebrate could command Hunter Killers and another one could command Ultras for example. Each Celebrate could even be given a few upgrades to enhance the units they command and whatnot. On top of that you could give the Overmind a top bar with a lot of abilities similar to Karax and that would basically provide for the majority of the micro when playing as the Overmind.

We can’t have the Overmind back. It’s like having Emperor Palpatine resurrected (again*), it totally wastes the story and sacrifice of Anakin. I’m sorry, but Tassadar’s death must be respected. En Taro Tassadar!

(* See the Thrawn Trilogy from the 1990s.)

Great, fantastic, amazing books, all three of them.

Except Tassadar’s death still freed the Overmind from Amon’s control.

But Tychus is dead as well and he’s in, so it doesn’t matter clearly. Coop isn’t canon, so it doesn’t screw with the story.

Also Mengsk is dead and he is also in.

Assuming Blizz and Games Workshop can put aside their legal conflict…

—In addition to the units mentioned, there can also be…
-Hunter Killers. Permanent ones. In lore, they required a cerebrate nearby to birth them, so that could be one requirement. Another is to limit them (maybe 6?)
-Torrasque. Kerrigan has this Ultralisk strain, but I’m talking the real deal. It can be extra powerful, but needs to be in the proximity of a few specific cerebrates. Stray too far, and it’s much less effective, or can’t properly revive. Limit 1 at any given time.
-Kadzu. The Muta that can change into a Guardian and back to a Muta at will. Add Devourer since it’s now available. Hmm, so like a Zerg version of Fenix?

—General infested terrans
-Different from what Stukov has (even though Banalings and Infested Volitale should cover these better, they can find a way to distinguish them).
-Allow players to infest structures like with Queen did to CCs in Sc1

—Cerebrates
Someone said it might be too much to not allow Overmind to micro units, so maybe let Cerebrates cover half of them?

—other powers
Overmind can “scan” areas, as a means of reaching out telepathically (like when it touched minds with Zeratul).

They already kinda wasted Tassadar’s death with the whole "he was actually Xel’Naga, and he’s still ‘alive!’ " nonsense.

Though if it weren’t for Stetmann, Mecha Zerg would have been a good place to almost but not actually bring back Overmind.

Not necesarly fan of Overmind in Coop but the idea of heroic units tied to Cerebrates is cool (problems is that Blizz can’t use Cerebrates anymore from what I gathered).
But I think OM could have Cerebrates sort of like Dehaka’s Pack Leaders and every Cerebrate would have it’s own heroic strains.

eternal conflict Tassadar can not prove death, living in khala and overmind is true heart of swarm

My concept

Overmind: Infestor of Worlds
What if: After being driven into the void by Tassadar, the Overmind was eventually able to return free of Amon’s corruption. It now seeks to destroy Amon and reunite the Swarm.

Key ideas:

-Infestor of worlds: enemy buildings killed on creep or while infested by a Matriarch/Empress become an “Infestation” that generates resources for the Overmind (more depending on size of building), Creep gradually spreads from Overmind over entire map. (sped up by Yggdrasills)

-Special strains: the extra resources can be used to convert units from standard BW zerg strains to special versions for substantial expense on a per unit basis

-Essence of the Swarm: Overmind replaces starting Hatchery providing Supply (increasing with upgrade) and Larva (additional Supply from Yggdrasills, additional Larva from Matriarchs)

-Unending Swarm: 240 max supply (300 with Mastery)

Units/Buildings/Mechanics:

Morphalisk Larva (produced by OM/Matriarch, produce units faster)

Zergling-Devouring One, BW Hydralisk-Hunter Killer, Mutalisk-Kukulza, Devourer, Defiler-Unclean One, BW Ultralisk-Omegalisk

Matriarch-Empress

Sunken Colony-Deep Sunken colony, Spore Colony-Spore Cannon

Creep Colonies produced by Overmind anywhere in vision+creep

Drop off resources at Overmind or Yggdrasill

Abilities:

Yggdrasill (permanent air structure, max # on map, give supply and heals in area),
Infested CC calldown (for BW infested Terran production),
Warp rift (temporary gate between two points),
global Swarm infestation (friendly buildings gain attack)

Oh yes I want to see that as well especially devourers children…btw don’t forget ygdrasil and hunter killer hero…and hero defiler strollum and infested ghost goska from inconsumate

I think this cannot be teamed up with another zerg, or He can control the other swarms units as well because He is the overmind.

And I think it would be cool to Him being a Cerebrate at first and upgrade Him to have the heroic units later in the game since the Overmind started as a merged cerebrates (based on the game atleast)

I think it was not about that. It was a Xel’naga who took Tassadar’s look to guide Zeratul.

Ahh, fair enough, I had taken it to mean that the Xel’naga had been doing it from the start. Your way is much nicer to the first game’s story.
