Terran scouts it? Vikings production starts immediately, 2 by 2 from a facility they already have for medivacs anyway.
Your big tech investment is made useless instantly.
So, you don’t make Colossi against Terran again.
Against Zerg? Viper. Abduct. Bye bye.
Even Corruptors do the job, they kill Colossi faster than archon splash kills them.
And there’s no reason to ever make them in PvP either, since Protoss has no light unit massed in the late game. Better to get that archon-immortal-disruptor ball.
My solutions:
- Make it so that Colossi and Mothership can no longer be abducted, just like Ultralisks.
- Give Colossi the same barrier as immortals, except it only triggers when hit by air-to-air damage. This would force corruptors to sustain archon splash for longer, and give some more time to reposition them against Viking clouds.
Truth be told, they’d still be too weak even with those buffs I believe.

Pretty much agreed. Just like my other thread. Colossus is useless atm in this meta. I never use it. Nor do i have have a reason to use it.

I’ve never liked the colossus anyways. It’s boring, binary, and uninteractive.
Actually think it’s in a decent spot right now, it’s viable to build a few but they aren’t the be all end all of Protoss matchups any more.

Just bring back the reaver
Why? It essentially does what the disruptor does but with less micro.

I prefer colossi over storm personally.
Every terran and their dog, and probably their cat, can split against storms while blindfolded, at least at masters level. And I have a knack for phoenix, so there’s much stronger synergy there than with templar.
And Zerg… let’s be honest, I’m going to be focusing on robo anyways, because immortal/prism is your best move as a protoss. Bigger windows and more forgiving timings if you just go into colossus instead of storm, and then you get prism speed. 2 base immortal into 3 base colossus into 4 base fine I’ll get storm because corruptors are good units.

100% agreed. Protoss need so much more love at this moment.
Why should Colossi be hit by AA? That should be removed. They are not tall enough! Let fighter jets take to the skies.
The Colossus have been this way since Wings and it is actually in a good spot right now. It is strong but also have clear counter.
I promise it’s coming. Matchmaker refuses to give me a Zerg opponent though…
The issue, as I see it, is that when colossus was first designed, it was countered by viking/corruptor and ONLY really viking corruptor. It was obviously also countered by flanking and rear attacks, by being a long ranged glass cannon.
The expansions have not only added new counters, like libs (which we’d expect to see in TvZ anyway) and obviously viper, as you say, but due to it regarded as too much of an all around unit in what it could kill, it was changed to be specialised against light.
So it’s a specific counter unit, which can be countered in multiple ways (many of which come from meta tech, anyway, as you point out).
So let’s choose which counter we think it should no longer be countered by. I think the viper is a good choice to say “cannot abduct”. That’s a good start, and still leaves Zerg with ways to counter it.
If we add barrier then it is no longer a “glass cannon”, which I DO think is part of a good design for long ranged units. Not sure how to help it vs terran without just giving it more tanking ability, which I’d think would make it TOO strong.
Colossus is the glue of the protoss deathball, it exists to pack more punch in a more compact footprint because it doesn’t collide with other ground units, which means when alone they are quite useless, and they shine the most when your army grow very big and start bodyblocking each other. But when you kite against hydra/marines they are extremely effective, because the immortals will tank the damage. You should never need more than 2~4 of them.
HT is more effective in most cases but they are also slow, that makes kiting difficult. Although, colossus is a hard counter, meaning if you are not facing many light units they are probably worthless. HT is a caster that do well against almost all units if they have the energy.
Colossus can be used as surprise unit. By hiding them in warp prisms, the enemy may be tempted to chase your army thinking they can win the fight while in reality they can’t, result in heavy losses.
also while we’re here, double the hp of lings, banes, hydras and roaches, so that colossus wont be too op
I hope you didn’t post this as whining after WCS where a top 16 NA GM didn’t even research Extended Thermal Lances… and it happened multiple times…
That’s like Cyclones without Mag Field or Hydras without range and speed upgrades.
Colossus are pretty decent if you know your own hotkeys.
I think I got this upload right.
I died to mutas, but also my execution was bad on many levels. Still think I will stick to either stargate into colossus or immortal shoulder check, both of which will cover against spire.
I see nothing wrong with making them un-abductable. Though I was never a fan of them when they were popular years ago. I much prefer storm or disruptors or skytoss. But to each their own.
Colossus useless a quite an overstatement.
A) It reduces the medivac count and that can be leveraged.
B) It’s far smarter to produce liberators in most cases and they are a much larger challenge for colossi / protoss in general than just vikings.
