I realize that I’ve been consistently making the Hosts no matter the map and/or enemy composition. Are they overpowered, or just being very good?
Nope, I don’t think so personally. These are units that are meant to gain value over time, with each spawn iteration. So it instantly dictates their usage and shortcomings.
The advantage being that they can provide said value, thus let you win every map without much issue. One key note being they can suit certain mutations well for the type of value they provide.
The disadvantage is that they aren’t the cheaper, faster DPS ramp up to their CO unit rosters. So you do lose out on the timings. This is not an issue if you’re not concerned or focused on faster pushes.
I’d only ever make them on the zombie maps otherwise you have better uses of your resources and time.
The other angle to this is that you could use the hosts on a separate control group to assault one part of the map, e.g. objectives, while you micro Dehaka & Zweihaka somewhere else, e.g. waves and clearing. This is likely more efficient than F2A and easier to micro than a more optimal army split.
creeper hosts IMO are super strong with the fact they basically spawn anti ground and air banelings and with proper unit comp in your dehaka army you can tear apart anything the A.I sends at you because the creepers alone do so much damage.
One of the reasons why Stettman Banelings aren’t use as much, is precisely because they aren’t free. Somehow he is the only commander without free Banelings. Even with collected parts it’d still cost some gas.
