I played Wings of Liberty for a little while when it first came out and came pretty close to finishing it. Flash forward to this past holiday and I grabbed the entire trilogy, played it all the way through for the first time and enjoyed it immensely. It is probably the best strategy game I’ve played. I’m kind of surprised by how good it was. Production values were super high.
Just wanted to say thanks for making this and I hope they can make more strategy games in the future.
Glad you found enjoyment out of it. Though I can’t really tell if you enjoyed the storytelling, which is viewed by almost all detractors to be the worst aspect of the SC2 campaigns.
The campaign is a blast to play through. The achievements added a lot of replay value as well. Really good stuff!
Blizzard has always made excellent RTS games… it’s a shame they seem to be done with them now (and are leaving WC3: Reforged a broken mess). Warcraft and Starcraft easily stood aside (or above) Command & Conquer, Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, etc.
Seeing AoE2: DE add new civs and campaigns to such an old game in a recent patch makes me even more sad for how Blizzard handled Reforged. It was right there to reenergize W3 by finally turning the Naga into an official 5th faction.
100% agree. The Extended Editions/Definitive Editions of titles like Age of Empires I-III, Age of Mythology, and Rise of Nations gave me great hope for SC: Remastered and WC3: Reforged. Most of those non-Blizzard titles got new civilizations, new campaigns and many got new events, new rewards, etc. I’m surprised Blizzard didn’t go the same route.
Yeah, it was great. Kind of reminded me of a Mario game, in that every level has a unique theme and could be based around a game itself because of how polished it is. And just makes you think “that was cool!”. I liked the mission where they used the design of Dawn of War, with the flag points. But a lot of them were intense and had you on your own toes.
Although this goes against what they were trying to accomplish, I kind of wish you could chillax, build a huge army and go at your own pace. But the game constantly pushed you to move move move, with enemies constantly attacking and minerals being sparse. Or a big flame of fire destroying the world behind you. It definitely separated itself from Warcraft by doing this, although even that has you pushing pretty good.
I thought all of the elements had to come together to make it a full experience, including the characters and lore as they tied into the missions, but as far as the actual story, they kind of lost me after a while. The Craft games have too many characters and factions, and I had some difficulty keeping up with the Protoss campaign. But I still had a good idea of what was going on and that was enough to enjoy. I liked some of the twists, and didn’t think it was bad. Then again I didn’t really get deep into it.
I thought all of those games were great and stood on their own as well. I wouldn’t knock them against another, they all had their own unique spin. I especially like Age of Empires because it’s a little more complex with different era’s. I have trouble keeping up with everything though; I’m not that great when it comes to strategy games. They are fun though.
Man, I really want to know what happened behind the scenes with WC3, because when they announced it they made it sound really ambitious but then they just uninspiredly fart out an unfinished product actually worse than the base game. Almost feels like at some point the people in charge just gave up.
I have been actually doing a play through of all my blizzard RTS titles (my order SC remastered mission, WC3 reforged graphics campaign mission, SC2 campaign mission, WC3 classic graphics campaign mission which I started after I got midway through orc campaign in reforged so I’m at different points, 2 SC2 co op missions, repeat cycle) for a few weeks now .
Anyway to your point. SC1 is the ultimate macro and smash / macro and slow crawl across the map RTS.
WC3 is the middle ground but closer to SC/BW.
Starcraft 2 is very different. Not better or worse just different. Being pushed constantly by either hard (more often) or soft (occasionally) timer.
Honestly, I kinda wished the SC2 campaigns struck more of a balance between pushing constantly, and slow push across the map type levels. It’s like when it came to designing a SC2 level, they had to make sure that it always ended somewhere in the 25-30 minute range. Lost that epic satisfaction of finally completing a level after you had to crawl across a deeply entrenched map for an hour+.
The final purifier mission of legacy of the void, 2nd to last mission on Auir in LotV (seems like there should be a timer here but there is not), first epilogue mission, Shatter the Sky optional mission in WoL, Media Blitz in WoL, and last mission in HotS are decent maps for taking your time, taking multiple expos, if you don’t care about achievements.
Very cool… I have been doing the same thing! After I finish up Warcraft 3 (on the Human / Frozen Throne section), it’s on to other companies’ RTS games. Age of Empires 2 is gonna be first for sure. Been on a bit of a strategy kick lately, even though I’m not that great at them and stick to singleplayer. lol
Im given to understand a significant amount of the Reforged project was outsourced, for various reasons. Im going to guess it was a case of contractors overpromising and underdelivering.
