I’m really concerned about the future of StarCraft. I know that SC2 is being put on the backburner for the future of the franchise but what concerns me is WHAT is the future of the franchise.
I love RTS games. I genuinely do, and SC2 is like, THE rts game. But I know that in order for the franchise to continue, there needs to be more than just RTS. New people have to come into the fold and kids these days aren’t like how I was as a kid.
I grew up on Age of Empires, Starcraft, Warcraft 3, you get the idea… Now kids are on Fortnite, Among us, etc etc. Don’t get me wrong these are good games, I love them very much, But they are NOTHING like RTS games.
This means either a Newer version of an RTS game needs to come out that can pull kids into the genre, or a new genre needs to be introduced into Starcraft.
I doubt StarCraft will get the warcraft treatment, Blizzard already has WoW as it’s mmo base and it does very well… Well enough at least.
A first person shooter? I know that we’ve had lots of attempts with things like Nova and whatnot.
What do you guys think? I’d love to see StarCraft 3 but taking a closer look at the company I just don’t know if it will happen. And if it DOES happen it surely won’t be like previous StarCraft games.
StarCraft means a lot to me, as I’m sure it does many of you. This is a game I played as a child, and I’d like to see the franchise last for many more years to come. So here’s to hoping it all works out.
Now Chess and Satrcraft are two games that have S (Strategy in common). Chess is TBS (Turn-Based-Strategy), SC is RTS (Real Time Strategy).
What makes Chess infinitely more powerful and enduring (it’s been around a couple of millennia) is that it requires little infrastructure (board, figures and a candle if night and no electricity), whereas SC requires a computer…
What’s more important is that Chess is playable from 5 to 105 Years old players.
Maybe SC3 could reduce the RT component a little? It will help a lot of people that are not 20 Years old anymore.
Starcraft is done for my guy. Unless some other company buys the rights, there won’t be anymore new content. Have you not been paying attention to the signs? Also, there’s no way an FPS can compete in the current market. Even Overwatch is struggling to stay alive. It is clear as day that the game we grew up with has reached its end.
No, what makes chess “infinitely more powerful and enduring” is that almost everyone on the planet has heard of it. You would literally have to be living under a rock to not have heard about chess. Who plays chess seriously though? Not that many people out there. You answered the question yourself too when you said it’s been around for a couple of millennia.
All modern games require a computer. All competitive games require edge and health to perform well. Popular games have a casual side, and actually, so does Starcraft (co-op, arcade, campaign, casual team games). What made SC2 fail over the other games then? The answer is simple. When they gained MASSIVE popularity in 2011-2013, they didn’t take advantage of it. This game has so much to offer, but they didn’t do anything for the casual side (I’m not even going to mention how they ruined the competitive side). So many mistakes were made, and while this game started to fall, another company (Riot) took the opportunity to make all the right decisions.
This game has a wonderful community. It has a casual and competitive side. There’s so many new things being produced even to this day. So why has it fallen? It’s simple. Poor decision making. Across the board. That’s all there is to it.
Couple years ago spoke with my friend about sc and he openly said can i trow 10 or 20 bucks so i can rape you couple times in game?
I watched him with “you filthy casual” look but today when i have soo many things going on in my life and i wanna relax with some casual game when i come home sc is last thing that comes in mind and i rly like to compete i still play cs go and mobas but rts…
Only way i see myself playing again rts is if they give RT part Korean treatment
I always thought that the worst thing in SC2 are units that kill too much stuff instantly:
widow mines
banelings
aoe spells
and most idiotic of all units :
DISRUPTOR
all above units make SC2 highly unforgivable, just one mistake, one missclick and you’re done
Now to OP:
Future of Starcraft is highly questionable, because RTS games are most demanding of all video game types:
arcade game - just control one unit with few keyboard shortcuts
fps game - WASD + changing weapons, jumping , croucing etc
rpg + basically mouse + few shortcuts
RTS ? TONS of thing to learn at once - training workers, army, researches, upgrades, control groups, camera location + insane multitasking at higher levels. It takes at least few weeks for the newcomer to even learn the basics, let alone some advanced keyboard layouts.
People want simple games, they hate when they have to put some additional effort to play the game, that’s why SC2 community will never be as big as Counter-Strike, Wow, Fortnite etc.
Everybody knows that, but the strategy component is what joins the TBS and RTS. People before me have expressed the opinion and desire to increase the S component in SC2 and decrease somewhat the RT one.
It’s not impossible, just difficult to figure-out the right way.
Doesnt matter. It will be an effective microtransaction advertising and sales platform disguised as a game. They’ll probably get over half of you on the nostalgia alone and then slowly whittle down your pride until you open your wallet.
