Shortcut to instantly select unit type after cycling them?

If I have a large army, I will select it and then hit “tab” to cycle through unit types. I would like to instantly select only the current unit type that I am cycling through. Ex. I have zealots, stalkers, and immortals. I tab through my army to see zealot abilities, then immortal abilities, then stalker abilities (blink).

I want to select all stalkers and move them away from my army. If I see stalkers in my units in the low center, I can control click on one of them and now I have selected all stalkers. However, I can have so many units that I have to click on the 1/2/3/4 option to see all my units and I still can’t see the unit that I want, not to mention that this is slow.

Once I tab to stalkers and see their abilities, is there any keyboard shortcut that instantly selects only stalkers so I can move them separately?

Click on one stalker while holding CTRL.

Protoss players and micro
Sorry how we do it is double click the units on the map, with practice it can work.

Hey it’s EuClowni again.

The best way to do this is CTRL + click on the portrait of the unit type you want to select.

I think I’d like to see it where if you tab cycle through units in a hotkeyed group, the units with the ability you last selected come up as default.

For example let’s say you have a group of Templars and stalkers. Templars always take the default spell option when grouped with stalkers. If you select the stalkers with tab and do something (like build probes), when you return to the original control the stalkers ideally should still be selected rather than Templars.

Okay so what I would like to do simply doesn’t exist. I was just checking. It seems strange to be able to tab through your units without being able to select them other than first finding them (which is sometimes impossible with too many units).

I certainly can find a unit and control click it or find it in my unit list when it’s not too large even though it can waste crucial time.

The limitation with the ability to select an army and tab through it is that while I can see selected unit’s abilities, the unit display in the lower center area does not jump to that unit. If it did, I could control click on a unit in that area. This wouldn’t be a problem except that there can be so many units that I cannot even find the unit type I want after selecting the 1 then 2 then 3 then 4th listing of units. Maybe there is a way to scroll through more of your units that I miss? Not being able to see all your units that way is a flawed interface.

Yes, it is. It is stupidly designed. That interface has 8 columns and 3 rows (and if you have more than 24 units you need to click the second or third tab). If they were more careful they could simplify and unclutter the interface by listing units vertically with just the number of that kind of units below.
An example:
Your army consists of 15 Zealots, 5 Stalkers, 3 Senrties and 4 Templars.
The interface would be: Zealot, Stalkers, Senrties and Templarr. Below the numbers 15, 5, 3 amd 4.
There are not many cases when people use more than 8 type of units.
For the problem at hand, the only thing is to use Control Groups and create a habit (commit to muscle-memory) to assign the created units immediately to the relevant Control-Group.

It would be great if it worked, but given how things continue after your post, I guess it doesn’t.

Can I also ask, how do you take units out of a control group again?

LOL, that is another chapter of stupid design. Instead of just selecting the units and doing a keyboard combination, you have to select the units and if i am not mistaken press Ctrl+Alt+Nimber and the system removes the units from the original CG and creates a new CG with the newly selected units.

Clumsy.

The most rational thing if you are doing a zealot/Ling runby is simply create the units, don’t include in any existing CG and send them to do the runby…

It sounds good but it does have its drawbacks. I personally use the console to transfuse weakened units without having to select them in the middle of a fight, or to handle initial reaper vs lings micro, as I just click in the console, which is not a moving target, the ling that is weakened and pull it back. A third application I use it for, is to quickly select a weakened Roach/Hydra to morph into Ravager/Lurker, so that I do that with weakened units and not full hp ones. It can still be done without it, but it is much easier through the console, at least for me.
