Selfish players in co-op are killing my motivation

just came out of a co-op game on “the vermillion problem”.
my partner was Tychus, i played as Mengsk.

is it normal for Tychus players to forego defense entirely (even that of their own base) and just saddle their ally with this task?

i understand Tychus is extremely strong in the field because of his hero units, but this guy left even his base undefended, and of course being the absolute dude that i am, i went and defended his base for him and proceeded to fortify his entrance with manned bunkers and anti air turrets - even still he didn’t lift a finger to defend himself.

when we went to secure the expansions, an attack wave came in afterwards, and this guy… just up and left with his spaceship ‘teleport’ as the attack wave arrived, effectively killing my army as they got stuck unable to retreat against overwhelming numbers of enemy terran units.

my poor troopers/aegis guard/intercessor (medivac) army stood no chance against this slaughter… not only did i lose all my troppers and elite units, but i also lost the weapons they had equipped which was worth a ton of minerals.

ok i said, i’ll just rebuild.

sike, another attack wave is coming in, this time for MY main base.
now, i had just had my entire army destroyed, so i pulled my troopers out of the bunkers on Tychus’s side in a vain attempt at defending my mineral line and gas - of course basically all of them died in the process, but hey i bought a bit of time.

after the last trooper dies, this guy… Tychus… waits for ALL my workers to die, and then spaceship teleports over to “save” me.

ok i said, i will rebuild AGAIN… from ****ing SCRATCH i suppose…

that’s when Tychus player said “Move” (presumably telling me to go clear out enemy bases and get the crystals).

i am not ashamed to say i lost my :poop: at this point… so i salvaged all my bunkers, sent what little remained of my workers and ‘army’ into the lava and left the game.

man like… sometimes i get the most wholesome co-op partners, and sometimes i get selfish idiots like this guy who literally can’t read a map, let alone defend his own base or help out his ally when their base is getting absolutely sacked after what seems like a deliberate troll retreat that caused my army to die in the first place.

A good player doesn’t need to build defenses but rather tries to intercept waves before they even reach their base, at least that’s what I do.
You should always strive to be self sufficient especially when solo since you cannot rely on your ally to always help you and as much as possible don’t waste your own resources trying to defend them except for expendable calldowns and stuff.

what difficulty was this.

I fully agree with what Koetetsu said. Sadly, Co-op is full of selfish toxic ruiners (just as StarCraft II in general, being a competitive online game), and because of this you’d better not rely on random allies, but be self-sufficient and ready to carry the mission on your shoulders at all times. If you don’t feel like you can/want to do this — then either lower your difficulty or stick to premade groups with trusted people. That’s pretty much how things work here, like it or not.

Also to add: That Tychus definitely was not a good player because they seem to be tunnel visioning on attacking, they should always medivac and intercept attack waves when available. But I’m also doubtful of your abilities if you can’t solo attack waves on your own (troopers supported by aegis guard and medivacs would be sufficient for early waves) or you were playing on brutal with an underleveled Mengsk.

brutal.
just standard, no plus.

this happened mid-late game.
my army died just before the game transitioned to harder attack waves.
i handled the defense of the early to mid game all on my own, and still managed to help farm crystals and clear out the expo.

i will admit my mengsk was not max level. im trying to get prestige1 on him atm, so no ascension bonuses. however, he is level 13 so he almost has his full arsenal.

brutal difficulty is usually not a problem for me tho, even during lower levels, unless i get a defensive commander as partner on an assault map or something like that, which can be a little iffy because mengsk can’t really carry with forces in the early game while leveling (maybe im wrong about that, but it feels like a big struggle whenever i try to).

i’ve started to supplement with an extra recruitment center just to pump out troopers faster in case they get wiped by some freak encounter, and just so ordinance and bunkers can be filled faster in case that’s needed.

I generally don’t run into this sort behavior (I’m on Americas). If on regular Brutal, I take it as a fun challenges since it’s generally a pushover.

But yeah, it does get frustrating if you needed the help. I for one still suck playing as Mengsk. And the rank 3 abilities from Royal Guard (from the lv15 talent) are a power spikes, nm you’re also missing out on mastery points. Made worse b/c it’d be nice to get the full XP from the win.

If nothing else, just make sure you can take care of yourself. So set up defense in your own base, but not your ally’s. For the “tower COs” like Swann, Karax, and Stukov… focusing on one area is better than half-azzing 2 or more areas.

I’m a big Tychus player and I play Lone Wolf. I don’t build defenses, but I keep an Outlaw by the bases to intercept and defend. Shame you got with a bad player, happens a lot.

Yeah americas server is actually pretty tame with a few chatty drunk players. EU on the other hand has way more trolls and most of them are Russian (I’m assuming since they use russian character names).

Makes sense. Mengsk without the massive eco boost provided by starting mandate is real slow to build up.

Could also be Ukrainian, Bulgarian or Serbian. But yeah, most likely nickname in Cyrillic is used by a Russian.

I’ve seen this happen sometimes. It manifests itself in different ways with different commanders. I think this happens when someone really wants to play a certain way tends to avoid routines the may not find as fun.

A long time ago, also in Vermillion, I had a Nova Griffin my whole army up and drop me in the lava. Lol. Not so much selfish, uncooperative play, but more trolling.

That happened to me before once too as you may have heard me mention once. Though it was at the end of a game we were loosing.
