After reading the topics and first three posts of most forums, I’m just curious: when did this “infestor brood lord” composition become the new Zerg meta? That being said, I am a noob and need to ask, why wasn’t a composition like this discovered and used indefinitely in the first place? Also, more noobish questions, why isn’t brood-infestor-viper a composition, since in my uneducated position, using spells that freeze an enemy and render them unable to attack is way more useful.
As far as I know, it started to slowly gain traction some time after last year’s major changes, so… somewhere during or after this year’s GSL Season 1, I think? Will need correction from others.
It’s a couple of reasons, but mainly it comes to actual feasibility of reaching said composition. From ZvP perspective, Protoss had several tool that they could reach far faster than Broodfestor combo to deal with it (better Carriers, for example). With Carrier nerfed and Tempest changed, Zerg could more safely reach Brood Lord Infestor, which prompted Protoss to go for Immortal Chargelot Archon based all-ins, which were also nerfed recently. Can’t speak for TvZ.
Long story short: it depends greatly on the meta and state of the game. Just one nerf can make certain compositions not used, or buff can make certain compositions used.
Difficulty of control mostly. While Infestor and Viper complement eachother very well vs air units, in practice, battles are so short and volatile that you may not have time to cast everything you need. It’s also the reason why you rarely see Protoss using Sentries and High Templars at the same time, despite the fact that Force Field can make Storms more potent.
Other reason is that all the gas that you reduce the number of Infestors by pooling some of gas that would be used for them into Vipers, so you have less Fungals, less Neurals, and less Infested Terrans… and only thing you really gain is Parasitic Bomb. Viper combines far better with Hydra-based compositions.
