Why did Karax get “+50% life” instead of “+50% life and shields”?

Probably because he has Shield Batteries to help actively keep a high number of units’ shields up, where Repair Beam usually gets hogged by other mechanical things.
I really don’t know.

Well, this question is for Kevin. And I doubt he will answer in this thread.

AFAIK, boosting both hp AND shields would’ve been too powerful? I’m also curious why it was to hp instead of +50% shield, but I figured with free, passive hp mech healing, that ups their longevity (no need to create as many shield batteries)

The idea is probably that it synergizes better with repair beam. Of course if you have an ally with mechanical units it’s pretty inconsistent.
What it really means is that Armor upgrades become more impactful since they cover both a larger percentage, and more total life, so just skip upgrading Shields.
People who used to upgrade only Attack might find it more worthwhile to add in Armor upgrades in the mid-late game.
