The UK trial was a joke because it wasn’t a trial before your peers, which in the USA would be considered a human rights violation. It’s just one of the many reasons the UK is considered a bit of a joke right now. Their legal and political system is outdated. The reason a trial by peers is so important is because it puts the power of the justice system firmly in the hands of the people, instead of self serving justices picked by the corrupt elite for how well they kiss butt to the establishment. To have a government for and by the people, the power of the justice system must remain firmly in the hands of the people or the system will use it to persecute political dissidents aka anyone who sides with the underclass of the society instead of the overclass.

In the USA, the elite / overlass try to accomplish the same thing using jurisdiction. They create jurisdictions that section off the portions of the population they don’t like, then they move cases into that jurisdiction so that the juries there are reliably biased towards the needs of the elite. Those kinds of tactics are used all over the place and it’s highly effective. A notable exception to this, where the underdog beat the corrupt system despite jurisdiction rigging the process, is Riot v Apple where Riot established they could setup their own in game purchases without going through the apple store. But the only reason Riot won is because they are ridiculously wealthy. They are literally swimming in cash. The jurisdiction issue practically guarantees the little guy is toast by comparison.

If you are a little guy in the UK justice system you’d better get ready to get rekt because it’s not a system that was designed for you – it was designed for your rulers to keep you in line. Good luck out there to all of you.

The US uses non-jury trials too, no? I’m not an expert on the UK judicial system, but I’m fairly sure it’s just civil and petty criminal cases that don’t get a jury

Yeah, I am not an expert either but it can happen. It’s called a bench trial and the judge fills both roles. Normally the jury makes findings in fact and the judge makes determinations in law. But in a bench trial the judge does both. It’s usually used when the trial is very small, under a certain dollar value, and it’s much more informal. It can also happen if the defendant waives the right to a jury trial, or if both parties in a dispute agree to no jury trial (usually happens when the facts aren’t disputed).

My understanding is that the UK system results in almost all civil cases being bench trials, and it’s obvious why that’s going to favor the big guys over the little guys. The little guys aren’t determining the facts of the case, and that means if your case has a class-ist element to it it will result in bias against the underclass.

It probably allows sexist biases to exist as well because you have a single judge, male or female, deciding the outcome. Imagine you are suing a church and the judge is a pastor lmao.

all Criminal charges carry the right to a trial by jury but this can be waived to instead have the judge make the verdict and it is indeed very common for minor infractions like traffic tickets.
