The tactical prowess of Amon leaves much to be desired. If the Overmind was in control of Amon’s armies (Golden Armada, etc), and was located in the void (so the alliance can’t kill him), how would he fare in:
- Heart of the Swarm (here he instructs Narud to act differently)
- Legacy of the Void (assume he takes control of the Khala like Amon did)
If for 2 it is a stomp in favour of the Overmind, how would he fare if he did not have control of the Protoss (but have control of the Taldarim)?
I assume one of the first things he’d do would be to create zerg broods stronger than Kerrigan’s, and create a superior Abathur
Bonus: the Overmind gets his own swarm and his respective Cerebrates in his prime, but does not have control of the Tal’darim and Protoss. He has Amon’s hybrid army. How does he fare in Legacy of the Void?
No matter the tactical acumen, if you face the player you’re cooked.
I’m talking lorewise though
Gameplay wise Amon did win against the player in both The Utter Darkness and in Shakuras, so the player doesn’t always win
Shakuras was a huge loss for Amon, albeit it was a loss for the player as well. Shakuras though was arguably the biggest hit to Amon’s forces the entire end war up until Salvation.
Blowing up your own planet is a savage move.

Indeed, but would the Overmind have been able to overcome their plans?
My vote is yes. He’s literally a giant brain.
He’d fall for the Shakuras thing too, taking the extended swarm and rushing the Protoss homeworld is his go to strategy.
I think his advantage here though is that he actually has the ability to move his forces around via wormholes. Amons brood is stuck on Aiur and places with warp gates. The Overmind will be able to attack anywhere.

Ah, so the Overmind would employ true Swarm strategies by actually warping his forces around instead of being limited by Amon’s mobility issues
If that is the case, then how fast can he gut the Spear of Adun and Kerrigan? Would he be able to beat them in the bonus scenario where the Protoss have the Golden Armada?
You can make a case if that it would have been better option for Amon to have done intermittent attacks on Shakuras or even not attacking Shakuras when he did, instead of lauching an immediate all out assault with a considerable portion of his zerg army.
I’m not sure how many Nezerazihm Amon killed during his assault. But it may crippled the Daelam more if Shakuras wasn’t attacked and they felt the need to leave a significant defense force behind; not to mention Amon being weaker from seemingly losing over half his zerg.
For the Daelam, abandoning Shakuras, consolidating forces, and the entire faction going all in / Auir or bust was probably the only way they could have pulled off what they did.

Maybe going for the khala in the first place was a mistake by Amon . I mean possessing the protoss and as a result the Golden Armada seemed like sound strategy.
But Amon doesn’t appear to do this in the utter darkness timeline. I guess Kerrigan surviving WoL meant he didn’t control enough control enough zerg to win by shear force??

To be fair his Moebius Hybrid Facility would have enabled numerical superiority of his troops, and quality wise he did not feel the need to improve his swarm courtesy of them being led by the Hybrid (which in essence are superior broodmothers/cerebrates)
If he improved the swarm though it would be superior to Abathur’s meddling, where Abathur did admit that Narud was his superior
Which brings to question though, if he did not possess the Khala (and thus Shakuras and the Golden Armada were arrayed against him, as well as Kerrigan’s swarm), would the Overmind be able to win against these odds? (keeping in mind that the feral zerg controlled on Aiur made vorazun shet her pants from the amount of zerg present)

Disappointed we never got to see Mengsk doing it though.
I’m not sure there’s a situation where that would’ve happened though, the Nerazim had already begun evacuating the planet by the time Artanis showed up, the Spear of Adun just allowed more to escape by holding a beachead in Talemetros while the bulk of the remaining Nerazim escaped.
If Amon hadn’t struck shakuras first moment he had, the Spear of Adun would’ve had the entire Shadowguard to back them up (which, admittantly, is not a super huge force or fleet or anything, but would’ve been a lot to the SoA) and Shakuras would’ve had time to prepare for any further attacks, preventing the zerg from invading by shutting down the warp gates. The only option Amon would have from there would be to send the golden armada, which would’ve diverted them from what he needed them for (purifying worlds) and cost him some pretty heavy casualities of his protoss forces to even try.
Overall I don’t really think there’s much you could improve on with his strategy, most of the End War was lost by Amon because Artanis and his advisors were both lucky and pretty tactical about their movements, and I don’t think you could easily have countered most of the stuff they did without the omniscient foresight we have as players.
I guess he could have glassed the planet of Endion which locked up Cybros
Or perhaps chase after the SoA if that is possible
If not then perhaps he could have created a stronger brood like Kerrigan to overwhelm them in the final missions on Aiur - his swarm was still far larger than what the Daelaam had, especially when he controls the entire planet
It still seems quite weird to me that Amon couldn’t have killed them even though his entire army near void slivers could have crushed Artanis
Though that may have just been his arrogance, bragging about his new host form
Couldn’t Amon have recalled greater forces upon learning that they intend to come back to Aiur? Especially since he could peer into Rohana for so long?
