No StarCraft in 2020 Blizzard's budget?

When I learned about it I was so sad. In the past I was huge Diablo, Warcraft and WoW fan but when I played StarCraft 2 I realised that it was actually the best Blizzard’s game released since 2010. WoW from WOTLK is on huge downfall, Diablo III wasn’t the best to be polite, HotS is a MOBA that doesn’t really feel like a MOBA, Hearthstone is not my thing and Overwatch while it might be fun is too childish for me.

StarCraft lore is so amazing. World has a huge potential for multiple games - Battlefield type shooters, Mass Effect style RPG game or even galactic turn based Europa Universalis type game. There are probably few more genres like God of War type slashers or anything else that might be fantastic and with the tragedy that Disney brought to Star Wars universe StarCraft has even more potential. Please Blizzard don’t leave this franchise and give us any game. It doesn’t have to be an RTS but literally anything.

Generally SC alongside with WC (which I played a lot but never been a huge fan) are in the crown of the RTS genre. SC was the game that single handed probably destroyed a whole genre because there was a time that if you want to release and RTS it would compete with SC and it was nearly impossible competition. Now as SC2 is the last real RTS game for the past decade it’s pretty normal to be the best game. I’m yet to see what they’re going to do with AoE4. I’m hardly hoping that the RTS lives again.

AoEII reforged is also quite alive I think but not even comparable to SC and SC2. I think that the biggest thing that killed RTS genre was the release of C&C4 that was a disaster. It killed the only true SC2 competition. C&C Generals and C&C 3 were good games - worse than SC and SC2 but still good games C&C4 on the other hand. I feel that SC2 thit the same thing that WoW did to the genre. Everything that is created now is SC2 clone or based on it at least. As long as there will be no FFX online eqivalent for SC2 - this game will be not invested in because with no investment it’s still the best in the genre.

They were good but the were not close to SC. That’s why I’m saying in nature SC killed its own genre during the time. All RTS creators knew that they will have to fight BW, and BW was at its peak at this time - popularity, tournaments, balance. They’ve tried to fight it for a short period. There were a lot of good RTS games like C&C, EE, AoE, CoH, RoN, even gems from smaller companies. However the RTS genre started to fade and the new players after the monument success of DotA found out that there are easier games. Nowdays the RTS is reserved for the old gamers who remember the times. They are way too demanding for the current generation of gamers. They are used to play games like LoL where u need 4 keys in total and there is not much to learn for the game itself. FPS where u need a bunch of buttons and it’s obvious what you need to do in the game from the first minute. On the other pole there are RTS games where you need to put time and effort to learn the basics of the game and then once hoping in the versus it turned out you’ve learnt nothing and you get destroyed. And small portion of people have the nerve to withstand this.

sc2 gonna be fine, as long as new maps and patch notes keep coming in, we’re gonna be ok

Yes but I’m not Online PvP player. I like StarCraft as a franchise and I’d like some new stories, campaign etc. New maps and patches don’t bring them.

Multiplayer is really the next stage of StarCraft 2. After you have beaten the campaign and finished the solo missions, online is the best way to continue. It’s much more difficult and there is a lot of learning involved, but the slow incremental improvement in your own gameplay without a pay-to-win aspect IS what makes StarCraft truly shine as a game. Other than PvP there is always co-op.

That’s the problem. I play Dota 2 and I already spend time to learn it and play it better. I don’t want to invest even more time into even harder to learn and master game. I respect all good StarCraft 2 players as they are extremely skilled and dedicated to the game. All I do is actually playing that co-op but I’d love some more stories from StarCraft universe. It has so much potential. Mass Effect type rpg game is ideal for it in my opinion. Imagine party of Tal’darim ascendant, infested terran, ghost and purifier dragoon traveling on different planets. There are many interesting stories to be told. What happened to Zergs when Kerrigan disappeared, where did Tal’darim find their new home, what happened to Stukov and what Nova after she killed Caroline Davis and they look for her in Dominium.

Blizzard already has 3 games in active development and another one with an expansion coming out soonish. Theres only so much staff and resources to go around.

Overwatch 2 looks more like a dlc than a new game/expansion but maybe you are right. It’s sad for me though that StarCraft is on hold since LotV.

have you considered switching from moba to rts? it might be better for your long term health

quitting mobas is very painful but very worth it, took me 2 years and a bit of PTSD (once you realize what you were tricking yourself into doing over and over again)

i hope the video game community doesn’t get destroyed when the rng moba bubble pops

I would personally call it an expansion myself, but im not part of the dev team and therefore don’t know how feasible it would have been to attach to the existing game client. Im getting the sense that all the stuff in OW 2 is what they would have done if they were building Overwatch as an FPS from the ground up instead of cobbling it together from the corpse of Project: Titan.

overwatch 2 significantly increases the amount of macro control in the game, and reduces the rng aspect by a bit

especially the new map mode push, makes me consider coaching an ow2 team but idk

I’m not that young and I have already few friends that I play with. Playing Dota as 5 man stack is great and fun. It’s hard to find friends to play StarCraft 2 with. That’s the problem. All my friends find it too challenging or they prefer fantasy or medieval type of RTS but then I’m sick of AoE 2 or WC 3.

i feel you as long as its bringing happiness

i lost a few friends who tried to “go pro at league of legends” so i got screwed over by the moba addiction jekyll and hyde stuff that goes down over there

i’m happy you have friends that complete your roster, it’s a lot more sustainable emotionally to play like that

Huh? No, it’s not. Playing mobas is very painful. It was extremely easy and painless for me to quit mobas after my “friends” insulted me for playing badly in a game. After suffering some toxicity, I had enough and quit mobas forever. Never even considered playing them again, not when there are so many other games to play and so many other more enjoyable activities to engage in.

Not to mention, Starcraft 2 is so much more fun and so much less toxic than DoTA or whatever they call it now (League of Legends?). At least most of my teammates don’t swear at me and blame me every time we lose.

i think league is more mentally abusive to its players and dota is more emotionally abusive, so dota2 is gonna hurt more game by game but league screws you over by making you think slot machines are skill games and it takes a while to get over that mentally

starcraft2 obviously helped a ton with that

Since matchmaking change in Dota it’s actually great. Valve put a lot of effort to make people play 5 man stacks instead of forever solo queue frustration.

Let’s be honest MOBAs aren’t about solo playing but about 5 man cooperating.

That’s the thing that will never make me play League because as far as I know you can only play as two players.

With 5 man stacks and everyone doing his job Dota brings one of the most fun experiences. I can play even pos 5 support as long as I play with friend who understands what I’m going to do and communicate.

I think building MOBAs around solo queue is the biggest mistake. In such environment everyone wants to be a star and get these precious penta kills while in fact great support player babysitting his carry well makes even mediocre player shine.

(edited because tencent owns a 5% stake in blizzard activision)

(retracted bc tencent owns 5%) the carry would actually matter a lot more than in dota2, where pos 5 can impact the game a ton, in league pos 1 can simply 1v9 in a (retracted) game

people in dota2 are much better at laning, they balanced the game so a pos5 good sup can hold a game together through teamfighting and positioning

people in league only care about teamfights, they balanced the game so a pos1 can sit in lane and farm and win 15 mins later way easier than in dota2
