What is MMR? I hope that someone can explain that, and how the ranking system works. Furthermore; how to explain to all, with a simple explanation.
I would like to almost get rid of the Ranks Bronze, Silver, Master, Grandmaster etc. and use the MMR number as our rating on the loading screen. Or maybe use both.
When we meet someone we ask what rank they are to see who they are and they say I am Silver or Gold or Plat D2 M1 etc., but no one ever talks about the MMR number. MMR is more important because the Ranking system seems to be broken. This is disheartening to so many because we don’t know how to communicate with each other. Some want to just quit playing SC2.
No one knows why the MMR goes up or down and why it is a different number each time (i.e. +21 or +23 or -5 or -22). The Ranking system also has tons of glitches, and everyone believes that they are being matched up incorrectly. Most are saying that they are playing someone outside there skillset or class.
I have heard that it might be a good idea for blizzard to have leagues for those that want to play only 10 (to 20) players like the NFL, NBA, MLB would do. That way it can cut out (or down on) smurfs, and it could be set also so that they could be voted out of the division and/or bumped to there real skill level (go back to being a Master). 2022-03-16T07:00:00Z
I feel like MMR is pretty self explanatory: MatchMaking Rating.
It’s a number that represents your rating, the higher the better. It goes up when you win and down when you lose, the amount is determined through a function that uses the delta(difference) between the two MMRs. That’s probably the highest level explanation one can give without getting into a lot of nitty gritty.
Once you hit Master 3 and above, it does display MMR. Below that, it’s unimportant. Leagues (which is what Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc are called; it is distinct from ranks), are functionally unimportant; but they give a sense of progression and relative skill level. Saying “I’m diamond 1” is easier than “I’m 3947 MMR”.
Valid. People can get into Masters with Bronze level MMR, so it can be confusing.
This is a tautology.
We might not know the exact algorithm they use, but it’s going to be based on if not exactly the ELO system (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_rating_system). The reason you get different MMR values is that the value is derived by how far apart or how similar the two MMRs are. If you win a game where you’re a couple hundred MMR lower, you’ll get much more MMR than you will against someone that is the exact same MMR as you. The inverse is also true when you lose: If your opponent has a much lower MMR than you you will lose much more MMR than if they were the same MMR. The only time there is an exception to this is when you have played less than 25 games, during which you have what is known as “provisional MMR” which is an actual unknown. While you have provisional MMR the system is still trying to determine where to place you, so your MMR will swing wildly up and down with wins and losses respectively, gradually normalizing to more incremental changes as the sample size of games increases.
Absolutely not. Closed sets make for niche metas, flagrant account boosting, and does nothing to decrease smurfs due to free accounts. The idea of democratic league promotion/demotion in such a system is absolutely heinous, it would turn MMR into a popularity contest if not a “venmo me for MMR” scam. There’s nothing stopping anyone from making a discord with 10-20 people (or groups of such) that play together in custom games in their own private system; but this system couldn’t work for an over-all ladder.
