Matchmaking system

Hello there Starcraft 2 fans and players.

I´m very interesting in understanding how the mms works here.

Cause, I´m all completely new to this game and it looks fun as hell! But, the issue I keep facing are Pro League players who think that this is literally a contest and will just end the match in less than 5min of gameplay.

Now, I´m not here to whine and complain about this like a lil´l girl, ight?

So, let´s get into this, now.

I´m pretty certain that the mms should be based on players status, i.e, how long they have played, what´s their ranking stage and average time win/lose situation.
It shouldn´t MOST DEFFENETLY NOT put noobs, like myself, to a gameplay that should face against average newbies not some pro players, which, I´ve noticed in both of EU/NA servers that is up to 98% of the time.

I´ve learned that this game is old, like…Really, really old but it´s okay.

Anything is fixable, so, why not fix the mms?
I´ve met veterans too who have been playing this for a while but had A life to deal with and then came back and was placed against pro´s, you can´t exactly learn anything when it comes to that, can you?

I´m also aware that in games like these, there are toxic players who´ll just simply drop their rank down to, well, bronze stage just cause they suck at it and can´t handle their kind of level of challenge.

Would be awesome to know what is up with this!

Cheers, Lads!

xx

Aight, so if I understood your question correctly you are getting matched with better players than you are?

I shortly checked your profile and I have only seen 5 games in 2v2 (which you all lost) - I assume you have another account on EU, so its a bit hard to fully understand your situation/level of play but anyways;

basicially you get a rating, like elo in chess - lets go with “mmr” from now on

the opponents you get are decided by this mmr - opponents are in the same range as you, which should lead to even matches - winning makes it go up, and losing decreases it
there are the following problems with this;

  1. people dropping their rank on purpose

  2. new accounts start somewhat low before they rank up to their designated mmr
2.1. every race gets their own mmr; so a really good terran player who never played protoss before plays his first matches with protoss at a “newbie” level before he reaches his designated mmr

  3. when someone is inactive the mmr drops (dont know if still the case, and if so how much)

  4. unranked is a seperate, new mmr where ppl tend to play when they are tired or try new stuff, so its usually quite lower which can also lead to very uneven games

  5. For teamgames (like 2v2 etc.); EVERY NEW PARTY HAS NEW MMR -> so that means I play with friend 1 -> we start at like 2000mmr (dont know if accurate) -> we play 15 games and win all easily and get to like 2600mmr
then i play with friend 2 -> we start again at like 2000mmr
then I play with friend 3 -> we start again at like 2000mmr
    and so on

thats (some of) the reasons (especially teamgames) matchmaking can be really tough at a certain level - if you play a lot of 1v1 it should get better tho

if that wasnt your question please be a bit more specific or smth

To piggy back off what agadmtCH said:

When you first start the game. For your first 30 or so matches you will be in whats known as a “provisional mmr” state. Meaning that the system doesn’t quite know where to place you yet. So during this time you could get put up against a pretty wide range of players until the system figures out what your skill level is.

But once you get past this provisional state, 90% of the time you will get matched against people who are with in +/- 200 mmr of you. Which is a pretty fair match up. Very VERY rarely will you ever go up against someone who just completely out classes you. It just doesn’t happen. Unless the person is smurfing but thats another issue that I don’t think is a big deal in general.

Team games are a bit different since the system has to find multiple people of equivalent skill. Sometimes there just aren’t enough people playing team games at the moment so the system has to broaden the search radius drastically. Which is why you could see gold league 4v4 players in a game with diamond league 4v4 players. It just comes down to player population issues in team games.

As to point 3 of agadmtCH’s post. MMR decay is no longer a thing. After 1 year of inactivity the persons account will simply reset as if they are playing for the first time again.

Hii, thanks for getting back to me! Yeah, it did help out a bit, some of it is still a puzzle to me but I´ll try to understand. I am an EU player and I have been playing for days, just took a break for a while because of the Cheese players (did I say it right?) and other stuff where I am out classed, so, I usually leave in the beginning of the map as soon as I see that it´s a 100% loss. I have been playing it for days and I do have the same ign in EU as here on this site, it´s my signature name in all games. Starcraft looks amazing and it is amazing, just, for me, 95% of the time I leave early game (1-2min) cause it´s a loss and I´m not going to waste my time against players who build up massive army and then hit me without any strategy. The only times I´ve won have been lucky with a guy who´s been doing most of the work

The game is old and almost no one plays ranked ladder casually.

If you can’t stomp the elite AI in 1vs1 or training mode, don’t bother with the multi-player, you just didn’t achieved a level to compete.

If you want to play casually, you should play the co-op mode instead.

Sc2 is one of those games where you are going to lose a LOT before you start to even remotely figure anything out. Then eventually you will look back and think, wow how did I ever lose to any of those people, they all seemed so good at the time. I lost more than 60% of the first 100 games I played.

My suggestion is to look up a build order guide on youtube for what ever race you play and do your best to master it. Follow it meticulously. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose the aim is to get better. You can get better even in games you lost, you just have to go in with well defined goals. Not going to get supply blocked, always making workers, keeping money under 500, ect, ect. As long as you accomplish one of those things you are improving no matter if you win or lose.

I’ve quit this game multiple times, whenever I play with friends or alone. We always got straight up trashed on. We know nothing about the game but when we queue we versed diamond players… how does this matchmaking work or make sense. How do I play people my level? or are there none that’s why when we play we verse higher level people?
