Match making with different difficulties

So I’ve noticed that when one selects Normal one can be paired with someone who selected Hard etc

This is kinda odd sometimes, as enemies are kinda weak

Anyone knows the rule for that? Like does it pair ppl of different difficulties after a certain amount of wait time?

i would assume this happens because of a small player base, so that you dont have to wait so much longer it puts you together with someone who isn’t your diffuculty level. I am often paired with brutal players, and i select hard. i find this kinda anoying because i ain’t good enough 4 brutal and sometimes im total useless or like more e heavy stone for my mate

I suspect that it works similar to the PvP search. Like you said, after a certain amount of time, the search expands to include players outside the selected difficulty.

Because every Coop map has two enemy AI that are allied together, I also suspect that when players of different difficulties are matched, the AIs are different difficulties as well. For example if a Brutal and a Normal are paired up, one AI will be Brutal and the other AI will be Normal.

This is correct according to terry’s finding’s. Please don’t listen to Terry.

Iirc, I’ve seen it found as the wave timings and objectives of the easier difficulty, but with the comp strength of the harder one.

Interesting, I didn’t know there’s 2 allied AI’s.

My impression is that it depends like so:

Higher diff decides:

  • amount of units
  • XP gain

Lower diff decides:

  • strength of units
  • wave timings

This is definitely how it appears, but I can’t tell how the 2 AI’s work into that. What are they responsible for? Ability use of units or something? Like I know the zerg units that throw eggs and run away only appear on higher diff for example

Huh… I never dissected it on THAT level before! All I know is I count my lucky stars when I can’t do a Brutation, I pick Hard, but end up getting matching on a Brutal ally. This means the difficulty is really Hard (or some derivation of it), but I’ll still get the Brutation bounty!!

Idk if Mutation does this, have you observed it? You can mouseover an allies’ buildings to see what diff they picked

I’ve been mixed into a lower difficulty on a mutation before. It also lowers the overall difficulty of the mutators but you get brutal rewards if you clear it.

Yeah, mutations do do that. IN the past, if I queued for Brutal, but ally Hard, the telltale sign would be game play is slower (before that got updated)

I just realised I don’t know the impact on gamespeed

I always playing co-op missions on hard difficulty, but playing mutations on brutal… Way recommended. As long as these mutations are not annoying.

Recently, in Malwarefare, both me and my ally were in Normal, but the speed was between Faster and Faster x2 (I tried to look at the replay, and sometimes Faster indeed seemed slower than what I had experienced during the game).
Not sure if it was a bug or a hack, but it’s not the first time I see an absurd speed.

lol I remember many times when I try to level (or relevel) commander back to 15, and had to face huge mobs at lvl 1.

Speak of which, I notice in some matches the game units would move faster while in some games slower, does it have anything to do with difficulties? (Most notibliy, the workers)

Yeah. IIRC the game adjusts to the slower speed. Like if a brutal and hard player were matched, the game speed will be the hard player’s. I remember there was a lot of complaints from brutal players about that coz they hate playing on a slower speed.

The difficulties selected by players 1 and 2 are assigned to AI players 3 and 4, but I am not sure if it changes anything by itself (like how the AI behaves).

Strength of attack waves that are send towards a specific player’s base depend on difficulty of that player. And expansion of player that has brutal difficulty is missing 1 mineral patch.

The rest (like HP or timers of objectives, strength of and timings of attacks send towards it … ) is based on the average difficulty between the two players (rounded down).

Yeah that sounds right, one of the reasons people pushed to have hard have the same game speed as brutal (that, and it softened the jump between difficulties for newcomers).
