I’m just wondering y’all: how do you counter mass tempest with void ray? I usually play Terran, but advice within any race would be nice. I’ve been trying mass vikings with supporting battlecruisers (for Yamato sprees), but both are getting eaten alive.
Marines…
Also some vikings, ghost for EMP helps too, but there is no need to be fancy
Vikings and mines.
Thor and mines.
Marines and mines.
Your choice.
you should be able to counter tempest with thor’s and the voidrays with marines
Thors and mines should do the job. Trying to play mass viking is losing game. They are paper airplanes on steroids. Hit hard, die hard.
tested in unit tester:
20 voidrays + 10 tempest (130 supply, 7500/4750 mineral/gas, 3-3 updrages) vs 65 hydras (130 supply, 6500/3250, 3-3, no creep) = 25 hydras survived (voidray ability was active).
20 voidrays + 10 tempest (130 supply, 7500/4750, 3-3) vs 130 marines (130 supply, 6500 minerals, 3-3) = 96 marines survived
20 voidrays + 10 tempest (130 supply, 7500/4750, 3-3) vs 49 phoenixes (98 supply, 7350/4900, 3-3) = 19 phoenixes survived
Unit tester is trash for testing anything but the absolute basics.
but i think every player understands that as long as there are no storms or disruptors, poor marines with stim will kill any protoss air
Depends. Tempests actually do well vs Marines. Really well if it’s early on, you have shield batteries and a ledge to abuse. But once Medivacs+stim+more than 30 Marines show up, that timing is over.
Did you use prismatic alignment vs hydras? If so, it only increases damage vs armored units.
If you micro properly, every Toss air army that doesn’t involve lots of phoenixes will get annihilated by vikings, alone.
Problem is, people are horrible with Terran; there’s a thread today complaining about tempests hard countering battle cruisers. 1) They’re supposed to. 2) BCs hard counter them…
Are widow mines really a counter to void rays? I mean, doesn’t voids outrange them?
there are always people, who will ask “have you used the voidray ability?”, so i just did that, so noone ask it
With fast burrow, as long as there’s something else to shoot at Void Rays, Widow Mines can literally run under Void Rays and burrow due to low priority (hence “as long as there’s something else shooting” part).
Not technically a counter and relies on other units and VRs not to manually target mines, but still a strong possibility (and very powerful if it works out).
A lot of vikings and Marines. Focus fire them down with vikings and ghost EMP to soften them up really helps. Zerg mass hydra with infestors either to fungal to slow them down, parasiting even a couple tempest can be a big change in the tide of battle or actually use shroud even though no one ever does use it. Against a Tossair player shroud keeps your hydras alive during the fight a lot longer.
But honestly if I see them going for a hard macro army setup I’ll push out before they get them or harass mineral lines as much as possible to slow them down to keep myself ahead in supply.
do you play bio or mech? thats an important question im asuming you play mech but as bio its easy just build marines
im decent at terran and imo one of the best things you can do against prottoss once you are in the late game is get like 3-4 starports.(maybe once you are on 4-6 base) the reason starports are so good is because if he is making collosus or tempests, you can make vikings. but if he isnt and hes just sticking on archons and storm and such you can make liberators. liberators are one of the best units you can build against prottoss.
Though only a supporting unit, if you can hit the armada with an Anti-Armor Missile from a Raven, you can make mincemeat out of them with fewer marines or Thors (and the Thors’ Explosive Payload can be quite effective against clumped Void Rays). Widow Mines are brilliant if you can burrow them in range or bait the army to fly over them, but the risk is that the armada will probably have an Observer with them, so you’ll have to find a way to take this out if you can.
