Map Ideas Thread

Hello all, trying a little something with this topic, so please read before posting!

Seen plenty of little ideas for maps on these (and the old) forums, and while I’m sure there were plenty of super-threads devoted to maps in the past, i have yet to see one here. So, I would like anyone and everyone with ideas for a new coop map (mechanics / theme / geography / etc) to post it here.

Please Read what others have posted, so we can avoid too many repeats. If you like an idea, we still have a like button. I’m hoping this will be huge without smaller comments, and would like it to be reasonably manageable.

Thank you in advance, En Taro Adun!

I really hate evolution missions in Heart of the Swarm but one of the ones I do like is where you test out the Viper strain of the Mutalisk.

It takes place in a linear jungle map, and you use the Vipers to strategically manipulate the units and the map itself. You abduct siege tanks off basically invincible positions towards your Abominations, abduct your abominations up impassable cliffs, and disable bunkers and entrenched tanks with toxic clouds. In one part, a siege tank comes out of hiding in bushes and ambushes you.

So, what I was thinking of, make a large jungle map with these characteristics and you need Vipers to manipulate the map in this exact same way.

Except, they’re not normal Vipers which can abduct one unit, they’re a special player-controlled objective that can abduct a single unit BUT can also abduct all units in an AoE. So, you’ll need them to get your army over an impassable river or up cliffs and such. Or, you can AoE abduct some of the enemy forces.

Also, give these super-Vipers the disable cloud ability, but the catch is, it costs tons of Energy and doesn’t affect all enemy units. Which units do and do not get affected should be subject to them being mechanical, flying, ground, etc. And there are AoE disable clouds for each enemy type, and all of them cost tons of energy, which means you have to use them sparingly to strategically disable, strategically abduct, and then deal with the rest.

To make this matter, you’ll be dealing with unusually tough mobs of enemy units, but you can use these souped-up Vipers to soften them up to make them less tough. So, you position your forces, AoE abduct half of them, AoE disable some, then deal with the rest. The sheer number of the waves needs to be tough enough to actually require this.

Bonus objectives require dealing with a giant mob without the super-Vipers, which might push some of the more creative among you to not use the Vipers at all in combat.

The particulars of the map are up to Bliz, but there should be lots of places which the enemy uses that are disadvantageous to you: enemies on higher ground, enemies in bushes that ambush you, flying enemies like Banshees that are even worse with the advantage of higher ground, etc.

The main objective is to have one of these super-vipers fly up to an objective, burrow into it, and then emerge after maybe 30 seconds, which fulfills the objective. I can’t think at the moment what the justification for that should be, but make it necessary to have that happen at like three or four points on the large maps, which requires you to escort the super-viper there, and in turn requires the super-viper to keep your forces alive in order for that to take place.

If a super-viper is killed, they respawn at a special nest near a player’s base, and the player can use his or her transportation abilities to speed-deliver them back to the main forces.

So, a chess-like map that requires Starcraft strategy to complete without tearing hair out.

Good idea… problem is you can bypass a lot of that by going air (although heavy aa defenses could be part of the system)

I am pretty sure, however, that if they wanted to make it disadvantageous to use air units despite the rough terrain, they probably could think of something.

For example, those nests in the Bone Trench map in Heart of the Swarm. The Gorgon Battlecruisers were taken out by the nests. So, maybe insert multitudes of nests that destroy air units… maybe making the super-vipers necessary even for air units to sneak past them or disable them.

I still think we need a mission with a Zerg announcer. An adaptation of The Crucible might be viable with an objective of keeping hybrid out of the pool. Alternatively, you could take the mission on Char where you race Zagara for eggs and adapt that somehow (maybe Kilysa has some Leviathan eggs or something and Amon’s hybrids are trying to take them to make super-Nemesises?).

Edit: apologies, misread the post.

I want a resource war map, where your goal is to have you and your partner’s combined mineral and/or vespene count reach a certain level before the enemies.

This map would have more expansions than the traditional 1 per player, and most of them are already claimed by the enemy and/or rocks. You have to clear out the enemy’s expansions and place your own to speed up your mining and slow theirs down, and the enemy would make periodic attacks on your expansions to try to reclaim them.

Han and Horner would own that map in five minutes. Especially Han.
