I know a lot of you guys are reading this, and thinking “WTF, is this guy mad, suggesting buffs for protoss air”, just hear me out.
If you buff the tempest, i think it lets you make a lot of other changes to compensate that make the entire meta better. For example if you buffed tempest, you could revert the broodlord nerfs, as tempest would now be a viable counter to broodlords. It would also really open up the meta around creating huge amounts of static defense in the late game in ZvP, which creates that situation where nobody wants to attack.
I feel like ZvP with a carrier nerf, tempest buff, then broodlord buff would just play a lot nice for both sides.
Obviously on the Terran side, terrans might need something to compensate. For me it’s less obvious what that would be, but i think tempests again could have quite a positive effect on that match up if they were viable units again.
tempest is a pretty viable unit once the upgrade is done, it’s a niche unit but can do the job, but I would lower their supply cost, 4 sounds more reasonable than 5.
They are better than they were after the huge nerf to 6 supply. They just still don’t seem to be good enough to fulfill there intended roll. Like it’s very rare you use them as a counter to spore fields, let alone liberators, or broodlords etc. Those are the units they should be great against, and to a degree they are, just it feels like they are so bad vs everything else it really hamstrings your army more than it can tolerate.
The “Brood Lord nerf” was a bug fix that prevented Brood Lords from exceeding their intended range; and this change was most relevant in TvZ.
No, you cannot revert that fix just because the Tempest got buffed.
There are no reasonable buffs that can compensate Terran for that. Tempests are a unit that just screws Terran over from a design perspective.
Terran doesn’t have any units that are good at chasing down a longer ranged air unit; and the majority of Terran’s anti-air options are easily zoned or slaughtered by splash, forcing Terran to deal with those units (HT, Disruptors, Colossus, etc) before they can even engage the Protoss army.
I should probably point out that there is currently some reasonable wiggle room to buff the Tempest. You just cannot expect any Terran buff that can compensate if Tempests are over-buffed; since Terran’s tools are simply not efficient at fighting Tempests and the buffs in question would quickly become unreasonable for other cases.
Agree. They are niche but they have a place. Definitely agree that 4 supply would make much more sense. Maybe need a small nerf of some kind… maybe small hp nerf and small cost reduction. I think they suck in PvZ even with the upgrade but maybe if they didnt almost cost twice the supply and take 5 (or 6) shots to kill a Viper, they might actually be a counter.
Just give them more armor or shield scaling with upgrades so they’re beefcakes and reduce their supply cost to 4. Terran have a few tools to deal with that as long as the range/damage isn’t buffed. Thors with repair early, Ravens with IM, Marines as long as there’s no shield battery proxy tempest cheese happening, Vikings even work so long as there’s not enough Tempests to one shot them (allows you to kite back and repair them).
Zerg wouldn’t care about a Protoss Battlecruiers that shoots every few seconds against 1 target.
Well, you’d definitely need to add some things to replace it.
Such as a decent siege+defensive unit, and possibly a support caster for armies apart from HT that does something beyond just providing vision. Said caster would also have to be able to do something about Brood Lord + Infestor’s zoning potential.
