I know that SC2 isn’t in development so I had an idea. What if there was map making contests for Coop Sc2 maps? They could be submitted for a chance at making the map a live map. I have noticed that there are new maps occasionally added to team games so it could be possible for this to happen even if the game is not in development.
the new maps that were put in team games were not new maps. they were old maps that got edited very very poorly. Literally on every single one of the new team maps one little thing was changed on the map and that was it, like gold bases being removed, or a rock wall blocking something before was removed. It was more of a lazy joke troll move by who ever intended “new” maps for team games, pretty sure blizzard was like " here you want new maps so bad for teams, we’ll give you “new” maps, hahahahaha" then they hired a five year old to edit out one thing on the map. And a few of the maps are even bugged now where you have workers from one mineral patch going completely to your neighbors to take minerals from his patchs at random, which has been causeing fights btw.
Too many obstacles. In the most logical order I can present them in…
–Blizzard has to approve the maps
That’s because there’s no more development on the game, I cannot see them ceding control of Coop assets and progress to the community, nor any other entity (obviously with the Microsoft-Act. acquisition, that’s different). Case in point was they were adamant that anything created in the new Warcraft 3 editor belonged to them (I guess as a precaution they don’t miss out on the next DOTA). That’s not to say it’s impossible b/c we did get a batch of community made updates through them. But still it’s like “rolling the dice on a Brutal+8 game”
–Map will undoubtedly need balancing, and balancing/bug updates
This is the sort of thing where having devs around would be nice. The dev. diaries stated that no trivial amount of work went into taking the maps from their campaign counterparts, and working them so that they’re suitable for 2 players, expansions have enough space, exps. are spaced far away enough, the positionings of the objectives worked out, and all of the sets of spawn points for attack waves were good.
–Previous map contest winners needed rework anyways
So SoA, and I think the other one was CoD? I never got the nitty gritty details like “blizzard made them worse for now reason”, or the submissions weren’t good to begin with. However, I’m guessing this’ll be on average, a moderate amount of work.
–They need to hire voice actors to do all of the parts
I know some of us don’t care about them. We would gladly sacrifice these if it meant getting more missions. However, if Blizzard’s calling the shots, this wouldn’t be up to their standards. Another issue is it could deprive us of some great material. Imagine if they skipped all of the voice lines from Vermillion Problem!? The guy’s practically a legend!
They would need to do voice lines for all of the relevant NPCs. IIRC, they would NOT need to redo voice lines for the COs because there aren’t any that are specific to missions (no offense to the voice actors and the chars themselves, I stopped listening to many of them years ago). However, all of those would then be needed to be redone in the 12 other spoken languages the game supports.
Along with what ackmondual said, previous community made Coop maps were part of a big process.
It started with the contest to make and submit maps to Bliz (the “Rock the Cabinet” contest for those that remember). Contestants were given a set of guidelines that they were highly encouraged to follow when making the maps. From the submissions, Bliz picked the top 10, then the community voted them down to the top 5, then Bliz picked the top 3, then (initially) put the 1st place into the game.
Bliz adjusted and modified (sometimes heavily) the winners before putting them into the game. To make them useable, the game’s UI needed to be updated as well.
The 3 winners were Part and Parcel, Cradle of Death, and one called Primal Ascension.
My overall point being that it was a fairly regulated process that involved Bliz and development, which I actually prefer because, for example, the Nexus Coop maps on the arcade are interesting and some are fun. But I feel that they need some tweaking to balance, finesse, and reduce the OPness.
Yeah and some of the the “new” maps (see Lexiphanicism) don’t go well with the increased creep generation range for hatchery, with creep from an expansion blocking another expansion location
yep thats another issue with the team maps they put out. I know there are like 3 on 4v4 that have problems like that, havent seen any on 2v2 yet or 3v3, but definitly 4v4. pretty sure those maps were from wol or hots. To be fair tho, the creep generation is the same its always been. It was decreased 2 balances patchs ago, then put back to normal in the last balance patch.
It would be nice to see new coop maps
One can only dream…
I guess then I just really wish that development would resume on this game.

Where can I find the other map submissions? Just curious to see what could have been in the game. Even with this it would still be less effort required then if blizzard did it all themselves.
The ones that didn’t make it into the game might be on the arcade. But I don’t really know.
I know the creator of CoD. He mentioned that once the map was officially added to the game, Bliz took his submission off the arcade (which made him believe that Bliz explicitly wanted it off). I assume the same happened for the PnP submission.
The other 8 finalists are in this article. If their submissions are on the arcade and if the names haven’t changed, they should be findable.
Hear hear!
On man. I really wish primal ascension was in the game. I said in another thread that I wish we had some sort of primal themed map that takes place on zerus. Its interesting to see what people submitted.
