Recently I started trying to get some more coop achievements, and had some luck, but not all can be done with luck alone.
I recently had a bad experience with Tychus “Buy buy buy…” achievement: Dead of Night to save the cost of 1 CC and 1 Refinery (and SCV that go with that) Only Tychus group upgrades structure and another to save the cost of the 3rd upgrade structure. Accidentally ended up with a Kerrigan ally that casted Assimilation Aura a few times P3 for no cost increase, ended up being useful to send the Odin collect stuff behind Kerrigan
Even with all that, I was very very very far from the achievement requirements at 19 minutes (the achievement time is 20 minutes), so it really look impossible to me.
Thus the question: do you know if there’s an achievements guide for co-op somewhere? To explain which map to pick and what strategy to use to get an achievement, or just state it became impossible at some point and is not yet fixed.
If you type the name of the achievement in the search bar, you’ll usually find forum posts describing how to get them. I suppose a certain sc2coop site could’ve added in this info per commander or separately. Some of them require cheesing a mission, getting a mutation which provides more kills or extending DoN. (I say “require” but some “pros” manage to get it in regular games, or being allowed to solo to get max kills/stats.)
Wrt Tychus’ Buy x5 achievement, you can’t actually get it on DoN because you won’t have enough minerals. On most missions you’d have 7+5 (12) mineral patches (or 36 SCVs) but on DoN you have only 9 patches, so 27 SCVs. The 400 minerals not making a CC or 550 minerals for the 11 extra SCV’s doesn’t make up for the loss of mineral income on DoN.
On other maps, within the first 20 mins, don’t get more than 3 of the following: Eng bay upgrades Guns’ Attack speed upgrade, Muscles’ Health, Fixers’ detection, 1 Medivac platform, lvl 1 Attack upgrade. These cost too much minerals to make the achievement. If you lose an outlaw, skip one of the upgrades. And make sure to saturate minerals on your expo before getting expo gas. The vid linked above probably has better details.
Do-able at lvl 12:
The one’s which broke have been fixed a while back (like two of Kerri’s).
There are some achievements which are easier to get with Prestiges - like Zagara’s Roach drop kills (only counts from the drop, not what the roaches kill after) - easier with P3 with the ability cooldown reduction.
Btw, for Zeratul you can get all 4 in a single game, once at lvl 14. On EU, I got Zera’s shield recharging achievement in my first Zera game coz my random Artanis ally quit on DoN.
True. But I suspect OP is level 15 anyway, so my comment is even less useful. (Unless they are lvl 5, in which case that linked thread covers which are not possible unless higher than 5.)
Conversely, there are some prestiges which make an achievement impossible. Not hard or difficult - just impossible. Like getting all 3 of Zera’s artifact fragments in 12 mins on P3, coz P3 has no 3rd frag. Or, Tychus Lone Wolf makes Buy x5 impossible coz Ultimate Gear is unavailable.
This will be your back up OP. I mean if it really frustrates you that much then go for it.
The challenge for this one isn’t difficult, has macro-teaching value, and is fairly non-tedious (such as some of the multi-game requiring x number to be reached).
That’s probably the solution I will take for Tychus.
I read what aneroid wrote, but while I agree that DoN has less resources and less income on the long go, I still definitely think the amount of upgrades I was missing was far too big in cost to be covered by the increase given by another map, to keep things short.
Sadly I think they only cater to Brutal players, so they probably think achievements that never require more than Hard to be too much child play to mention them.
What bother me is that I completely sacrificed lots of things, to an absurd extent, and I even benefited from Kerrigan resources.
I was hoping if you do crazy enough things that can cause you to lose the game and/or annoy your ally, then you should be able to succeed with a decently big margin. But that didn’t happen.
About that, let me clarify one last thing: I was playing on Normal that time, to evaluate the difficulty before the real thing, and thinking I may have to include the potential need to rebuy a dead Outlaw during the real thing. So I didn’t really sacrifice my ally, and me mentioning 19 minutes instead of 20 at the start is because the mission ended in victory there, but it was still enough to see there was an issue.
Too bad there’s no specialized site for that (yet?), but while I hate videos, I may still look at what’s here next time I do an attempt, thanks for that.
I’ve generally seen it more like “if you can do this on brutal then copying these tactics will be easier on hard”. Though some achievement guides specifically mention it being easier on brutal due to the number of units - e.g. kill x units with 1 y.
All the co-op achievements are totally doable, and perhaps with the help of a friend on Discord. Maybe share a replay for some advice?
The achievement has to be completed at difficulty Hard or higher.
I just tried it again on VL as P0, the most standard thing, solo’d it without an ally’s help/resources. I did this mostly cuz Youtube videos are 2 years old.
Here’s what you do NEED to sacrifice:
You can’t get your armor upgrades. This is generally a no no anyway. You can get your +3 weapons (not 4 or 5). You’ll run into a resource shortage otherwise.
You CAN get the BRB and gun’s attack speed upgrade.
You CAN get all 3 Medivacs for good measure.
I got all 5 ultimate gears by 19min by having the following:
Tychus, Same, Sirius, Vega, Nux.
+3 weapons, BRB, attack speed upgrade.
3x Medivac
Needless to say but Imma say it, don’t lose your outlaws. What’s important here are two folds. One, you don’t want to respawn and waste resource. You have some room but this is an extra expense for no reason. Two, your overall DPS will fall so pushing down areas will be harder.
Of course, if you got an ally that is remotely doing anything those shouldn’t be an issue at all. I did mine as true solo. Also, if you had to lose an outlaw, then you can also just purchase the gears anyway and not respawn them as a last-last plan xD.
That’s kind of another form of “grinding” that I’m going to avoid. If they come “organically”, then great! Else, I’ll see how things go after say, a year.
There are DEFINITELY ppl who’ve 100%-ed the Coop stuff. I’ve seen some who’ve 90%-ed the total achievements. If you’re asking for ppl to post here specifically, then we await our honored players!
The only one’s which come organically are the “do 100k dmg with X” and similar - which are a bit boring. Or the worst example - getting 500k or whatever vespene with Swann’s drones. You’ll get it over time once you’ve played enough with Swann. They shoulda changed it to “deploy 8 drones within 6 mins” which would require you and ally to expand fast and take expo gas. Which has value even if one isn’t worker-harvesting from the refinery immediately.
Some CO-specific achievements do require special effort which one would not take while playing a regular game, even at a pro-level. Using the theme of the Tychus achievement, I can get Buy x5 by the 22-23 minute mark but usually I don’t use 5 outlaws, and having 4 fully powered up with attack + health upgrades is more useful to me than all 5 with just +2/3 attack. But a more pro player with excellent micro and macro might be doing Buy x5 as their default playstyle.
The nice one’s, imho, are the one’s which teach players something - like Zeratul getting 3 frags in 12 mins (easy even sub-15) is about prioritising getting those asap and always a good way to play Zera, etc. There needed to be more like those - “do this in one game, and learn to do it in every game”.
