If cannon rush were erased from the game

Would you want a mineral cost change for the cannons, as they would then become a purely defensive structure with no other purpose?

If so, which cost would you deem appropriate?

If you scout, a cannon rush will outright fail. About 4 workers per pylon put up and you can still produce basic army units and are already ahead of the protoss. Be wary of red herring pylons meant to distract you from the important pylons Important pylons are the ones in the natural meant to protect the pylon closest to the ramp Even if they wall off your natural due to your lack of scouting, your economy and technology will be able to break out and steam roll them over as they have done too much damage to themselves, do not waste SCVs or lone marines ect. to photon cannons. Do not, you will be surprised on how much a single base can produce and when you can transport you can expand.

Learn to cannon rush so that you may learn to counter it

13 - send probe out to enemy base when finished
14/15 Pylon
15/15 Forge ->send that probe as backup
Build a pylon in the natural near the ramp, go up and act as if you are scouting, when the forge is close to finishing, start putting up red herring pylons to distract the opponent, have the secondary probe set up a cannon in the ramp and asap place a pylon within range of that cannon.
If you are defending since you did not send a worker to baby sit the extremely dangerous probe You also are not losing minerals as they opponent is losing mining time by sending the probe as well, all other pylons are of secondary importance. Photon cannons haves less health than pylons; attack them as they warp in. Ff there are multiple cannons per pylon, because you didn’t scout, then attack the pylon itself

A cannon rush succeeds because the rushee does not scout properly. The same happens with 4gate, which fail if you send a cheap unit to look around common proxy hotspots.

I myself have failed to cannon rushing because I didn’t scout, and I have succeeded in cannon rushing myself when the opponent didn’t scout or respond properly.

During a cannon rush the Protoss will have around a 14-12 probe economy. They are already behind. A terran can also lift their command center and even if they lose mining time, the primitiveness of the protoss economy and technology makes that hardly a concern.

Given that a Zerg can use overlords to scout their base and nearby proxy hotspots and they have creep, there is little to no excuse to succumbing to a cannon rush.

Yes I myself enjoy cannon rushing, and it is a good part of the meta because it teaches you to scout. I recommend learning how to cannon rush yourself to understand the psychology of the rusher and where and why they put the pylons so you know what exactly to destroy.

Usually a probe will set up the first pylon and cannon in your natural. Scout it when going against protoss. A tell tale sign is if you do not see any gateways(click on the large glowing balls) or any

I understand that you probably are pissed to losing to a cannon rush; however, scouting is the most basic and vital skill and if you cannot learn that, then you cannot get further up.

I myself can start whining that proxy barrack rushes are OP. Nah, I didn’t scout, only when I sent an overlord to scout was when my opponent failed and succumbed to the swarm.

When it doubt, scout it out
When you get good enough, you will have to scout less as you will learn the proper response to such strategies. (Kill the probe while killing the pylon, if they are proxy bunker rushing, kill the SCV building barracks which only takes a few workers).

There is no need to compensate

Removing cannon rushes from the game won’t affect overall balance

If you really really hate a cannon rush with a passion, send 3 probes to intercept the enemy probe scout with the intention to kill it from the moment it go up the ramp of your natural. Keep one probe at that ramp and hotkey to pull 2 probes or you can even use hotkey 1,2,3 for each probe and start chasing and surround it, the rush should immediately fail before it started, then your opponent will down a worker and with a useless forge early game, you should be ahead.

Why would you want to make a game less versatile?
Sc2 is not about “20min no rush” every game.
CR is fine and badly designed ladder maps are getting fixed pretty fast.

Cannon rush is fine.

Guys. Stop answering to try and help me, I have no issues with countering cannon rushes. I never lose to them.
But there’s a lot of debate these days about them being unhealthy for the game, and lots of people want them gone.

My question is merely: if that were to happen, how much should cannons cost?

I believe cannon price was never changed since the introduction of the original starcraft in 1998, along with the price of zealot, zergling, marine, overlord, supply depot, pylon, gateway, barracks, and forge. If there is something need to be done, it should be warp in time increase when outside the effect of warp conduit but not the cost of the cannon itself.

I think cannon rush is 100% fine, I never lose against it because my builds are even more aggressive than the cannon rush…

What the heck are your builds? Worker rushing?

It’s futile to try to explain

you say you want cannon rush nerfed and people imediately think you are a noob

That won’t help. They aren’t open to reason and help. In their mind it must be nerfed, but it has been in the game since day one and it isn’t ever going to change.

Broodlord infestor has been in the game since day 1 and the balance team has adopted the same mentality. See how smart that is and how that’s working out for the betterment of the game.

Evolution be danged, we pride ourselves on our suckage.

Argumentum ad antiquitatem is not a valid balance consideration.

What about spine crawlers? They are like photon cannons but can be reused to defend the changing edge. I think that is OP. And hatcheries producing every kind of unit? No! Like 12pool in lotv is so OP and we should make the spawning pool a defensive structure. And what about gateways? They shouldn’t be even able to make units without warp gate upgrade. Marines? Too versatile, they can shoot a carrier down for jim’s sake!

Wow, it’s almost like someone refused to learn scouting and blamed the superier execution of the opponent.

Cannon rushes are balanced. BL infestor is not. We have not seen any patchling protosses make it to gsl on cannon rushes. We have seen patchling zergs from BL infestor

i would be sad if cannon rush was removed, it’s such a signature part of starcraft…
i hope they never do that, i always win vs cannon rush

That’s simply not true. Did you ever try it in a unit tester? You need 5, but only if you are right there the second the pylon gets planted. Otherwise 6.

That, neither. Only if they are much worse players, i.e. lower league (which you don’t encounter in ranked games). I sometimes win a CR game (as defender), but lose most. Not to the rush itself but to the follow-up.

It might be balanced in top leagues, but definitely not in lower leagues.

Btw, I tried it myself in PvP without practicing at all and won with ease. As Zerg and Terran it’s a lot easiert to defend because of bunkers and spines, which both don’t require ebay/evolution chamber.

It will not be missed.

What a joke of a post.

PrintF wouldn’t get to top 30 GM cannon rushing only on a non-barcoded account is cannon rush wasn’t OP even if you know it’s coming.

God these forums are so bad.

150 is fair it have 20,4dps 150hp 150s 1 armor

I’ll actually answer the question instead of try to give advice since I read the thread before posting, unlike 90% of you. :stuck_out_tongue:

If Forge needed a Gateway 1st then Cannons would need to be compensated but I don’t think reducing the cost is wise or you’d just end up with Turtle Toss as the new meta. Walls of Shield Batteries and Cannons can fend of a lot of stuff.

Personally, I’d rather give Protoss back the Phase Cannon and make each cannon upgradable into a Phase Cannon. This would allow for relocation of defense and would enable some weird form of harass, like a Warp Prism + Phase Cannons while the army pushes the front.
