I had the same problem for the whole weekend until I had it enough and just ended up deleting the ‘hosts’ file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc, and it’s somehow working - on the game room list in Customs I can see a couple of still ‘Loading’ game, which seems to be the very cause of this whole situation. I don’t know what deleting ‘hosts’ file might bring, but for now I’m happy.
Most hosts files are empty by default so it shouldn’t affect the system if deleted. It only becomes a problem if 1) it had necessary mappings in it, or 2) it’s needed at a later date and needs to be recreated.
That said, since most hosts files are empty, I don’t see how deleting it would change anything with the crashes. If anything, adding blocks would be what helps.
leviathan windows/system32 is a windows file and not a sc2 file, or have anything to do with sc2. This wouldnt even come close to fixing the problem and would more likely crash other peoples comps if they went out deleting it.
The OP is talking about their “hosts” file. The OP’s mention of system32 is just part of the folder path, not an actual file.
The hosts file is just a plain text file for URL/IP mapping. By default (average computer user) it doesn’t contain any mappings so it’s not used for anything.
Thats the thing here leviathan, what he saying to do should have no effect on sc2 what so ever, on top of that, deleting files in said path will most likely have negative results on peoples comps considering it has to with the drivers for hardware. Im betting more than anything the dudes trying to get people to delete files to purposely crash there comps, rather than it have any effect on how sc2 runs. Do you see what im saying now. Like it cant be going over your head that high my boy.
I don’t see how this fixes the new long name exploit (previous it did cuz it was using those paths).
It’s fixable but its required that you are crashed once by it, then you can find the exploited *.s2ml file in cache, but the process can be a bit tedious without having some script for it.
Ah! Yeah, I agree there. I don’t see deleting the hosts file helping anything with the current map/mod name exploit.
Not everything in and below that folder is driver related. The hosts file is an example of that. It doesn’t have to do with drivers or hardware. It’s just a URL/IP mapping file that by default doesn’t contain any mappings. (Which would be the case for the vast majority of average computer users.)
For a average home computer user who isn’t doing any network admin on their own network, deleting an empty hosts file isn’t going to have any deleterious effect.
Conversely, if the user does admin work on their network that requires URL/IP mapping, or if it’s a business computer where the system admins place mappings in the hosts file, then it shouldn’t be deleted. Even if it is though, it can be restored/recreated.
Deleting the hosts file would never crash a system from the deletion itself. Mess up existing IP mappings? Yes. But not crash the system.
That’s quite strange because if i’m correct you were encouraging people to play SC2 while i advised them to not touch SC2. Now all of a sudden you’re warning people ? Have you changed your attitude ?
two totally different things dude. get your head out your rear. The guys messing with customs are only crashing sc2, and it only effects sc2, they arent hacking your comps or telling you to delete possibly important files now are they. There only effecting sc2 to troll one guy. This guy here is purposely telling you to delete files that possibly may effect windows and your whole computer. Thats a HUGE difference.
I know.
I’m asking why all of a sudden you have changed your opinion. If i was complete dick i could say something like:
“OP does not have bad intentions. Deleting those files will not break your computer. You are spreading fear and panic across the forum which is irresponsible”.
