I was noticing most people play 1v1 in this game. I assume this is because you have true agency in 1v1 and don’t have to worry about someone elses bad performance ruining it for you. I find them fun because I think it is exciting taking on a foe with a team of people needing to work together. What are your reasons for liking or disliking team games?
- Play Co-op
- Meet idiots at best, things you can’t even find a name for at worst
- ???
- Don’t profit
Several reasons for disliking it.
-Longer queue times
-Lower player pool
-Weird maps
-Game not balanced for team games
-Very random matchmaking that punishes you if you are playing solo
-Tons of low level players doing weird things and some of them BM
I played team until I got all the portraits, then switched to 1v1 only, team games could have been fun but it’s a forgotten mode and if you play it in a non troll mode you will get dissapointed.
Yea. Its definitely not uncommon to get someone doing something stupid or trolling in team games. Sometimes you get people who just team kill to be jerks. Thats no fun, but its inevitable it will happen soon or later unless someone does a premade.
Team games can be a lot of fun if you are playing with friends, otherwise it is just rolling the dice with ~80% odds of being a horribly one-sided steamroll and generally bad experience. We’re talking about 3 bronze leaguers who can’t speak or understand english with you against an arranged team of dia/masters players hanging out in discord.
If you queue RT you will typically get one of six types of people, in order of likelihood:
- <40 APM skytoss who spawns in the back/safe location but still opens by making 5 cannons around his nexus then expanding before starting a gateway.
- <20 APM guy who will field ~30 0/0 no-shield no-stim marines at around 33 minutes and will still be loading them into bunkers, probably blocking your production’s reinforcement pathing.
- ~60 APM guy who stops making workers at around 30 and at some random point randomly suicides their army , which makes them very angry and they will not stop typing about how bad everyone else is for the rest of the game.
- Someone just AFK, for however long the game lasts, 6 minutes, 2 hours, they are just there and AFK holding 1 mineral line hostage.
- Someone who simply attacks you or your teammates with their starting workers, or masses some T1 unit for a few minutes and then tries to team kill you with that.
- Rarely, a dia+ player actually trying to win.
Oh yeah, and probably about a 50% chance any of the first 5 types will be expanding to your natural expansion before making any workers or structures. So unless you enjoy random chaos and don’t care about being steamrolled by a coordinated team of smurfs, avoid RT.
Let me add to the list. In no particular order.
-
Someone who doesn’t do much but build cannons and turtle into skytoss and just hangs out at the base till they are nearly maxed in carriers.
-
People who build lots of units but don’t scout or move out until someone else moves in first.
-
Zergs who build nothing but swarm hosts the entire game and try to nydus everywhere. Then when armies start a-moving, they can’t contribute much to defense.
-
Terrans who try warp in battlecruisers 1 by 1 across different parts of the map or
-
Terrans who just build bcs and never ever move out entire the enemy army is attacking.
-
Zerg who are very intent on winning the game by mass ultras even if there is tons of void rays or bcs out.
-
People who spend a lot of time talking about nonsense in chat instead of focusing on the game.
2v2 is imo a really nice gamemode, even with RT it’s usually mostly fine unless you get really, really high on ladder. And the amount of players in a match is small enough for maps to make sense.
3v3 and 4v4 are too nonsensical and rush-oriented for my tastes.
Yeah, my commentary was referring to mostly 2v2 and the random 3v3, but the higher the team, the worse it gets, 2v2 it’s kinda random but it’s somewhat similar to 1v1, 3v3 and specially 4v4 are clown fiestas.
Last time I played to test the master bug on this account I played with a guy that was like that, me Z, him P, against double P, I knew I had to attack.
Did an agressive opener, did a lot of damage with early pool against two players, partner just chilling on his base.
I expanded a lot after the damage being done, my ally expanded just one time.
Did an attack, alone because my ally didn’t move from his base, so I did some damage, fine for us.
They attacked us and I had to defend alone., lost two bases, all my army and part of my reinforcements, all my ally did was showing a bit his army moving it to his nat, and then expanded again, he basically let me lose more than I should.
We finally moved together and won because I remaxed on ranged lurkers and he had a full carrier fleet, had around 16-18.
Next game went the opposite way, an ally that was an actual ally, expanded safely thanks to me,defended our bases, attacked when I attacked, his level was lower than mine but he tried and we won.
I am not a good team player in general. I loved LoL for example, I think the game-play is really fun, but after I play a single game I am reminded why I always gravitate back to SC2, I do not like dealing with other people’s own strategies, neither do I like my mistakes impacting them. To be honest the 1v1 aspect is what draws me so much to SC2.
I draw the equivalent with tennis (which I love), when you talk about tennis you are talking about singles. Doubles is like the fun distraction that you use to lighten the mood, but the real deal and what people are really interested in is 1v1.
I think MOBAs are simply better tailored for teams, RTS really shine in the 1v1s, and the genre is just better suited for it and should always concentrate on 1v1 as the main game mode.
As everyone else is saying, it is the most horrific experience in SC2. Second to meeting a hacker on the ladder. The only thing worse than team ladder is meeting a hacker on team ladder. The average IQ of a human being is between 85 and 115. You are considered intellectually disabled if you have an IQ less than 70 - 75. However, I would put the average IQ of a ladder player at 69. People are so awful at the game I often question how they are even capable of breathing. Maybe they are new to the game? No. Sometimes they have 10k+ games yet they play at a pace so slow a monkey could play better by smashing random keys on the keyboard. If you are a sane human being, there is absolutely 0 reason to enjoy random team games. On the other hand, it is very enjoyable making a premade team and stomping on said disabled sub-humans.
Blizzard giving 0 muffins about team games is one of the silent killers of the game IMO. People LOVE team games, but how can you love it if it’s balanced poorly in many senses? So much potential completely lost in the void.
I sometimes play hots and that game is a lot of fun even with potato allies, althought I have encountered more trolls there than in sc2.
If Frost Giant want to make a sucessful game they are going to do a proper team game, and knowing they are going to choose the friendly aspect of the rts I’m sure they will do some kind of RTS that is suited for team games.
I tried Hots back in the beta days. But immediately felt it was too team oriented. In the MOBA spectrum HOTS is probably the least individualistic out there since you cant really get fed and hard carry. So to me it only exacerbated the problem. It seemed like a great game though, I especially liked the map diversity, just not for me.
team games are awful, the people that play them, usually aren’t very serious about starcraft, if they are, they are playing team games for a laugh or to play with friends.
anyone playing team games seriously i feel bad for… they probably need some help.
Team games are for when the 1v1 meta is really stale. Unfortunately they buffed 1a toss to the moon while nerfing infestors. So now Protoss players have a free 800mmr and there’s less and less zergs. A game without protoss abusing skytoss is always 100000x better.
There is 0 enjoyment premaking teams, only playing meta builds and crushing scrubs. Herp derp why do you think most of the high level random team players left?
I think part of what makes RTS so appealing is that everything that happens is on you. If you make a mistake, it’s your fault. If your opponent makes a mistake, it’s their fault only. So while many people in this world do not like the tryhard aspect of this game, it appeals that much more to those who do like the individual challenge.
I hope it’s similar to SC2. I think if they take a route like Direct Strike, it will get a lot of people, but it will lose its competitive edge. And that would make many diehard SC fans sad. They better keep the competitive edge.
I’d say this only applies to people who play random team games. There’s no harm in playing with friends. Just because you’re lonely, doesn’t mean you have to project your feelings onto them lol
Leave it up to the TCF to make a neutral post into an opportunity to whine about Protoss
I personally do what I want in premade unless I know my opponents are decent. For example, I worker rush. I proxy rax. I stay on 1 base the entire game.
As for why all the high level random team gamers left, it’s because as I said above, there’s only monkeys left on the ladder. If you win you gain 0-1 MMR. If you lose, you lose 100 MMR. There is no gain in playing at the top level. I’ve talked with many high level team gamers about this. That’s why you see a bunch of people only play 1 game a season - to keep that title of being at the top.
i mean like, playing so serious that you need to win, or that you would spend time watching replays on how you lost that match… imo 2v2+ is for sharts and giggles try out dumb builds with your friends, if it works sweet if not laugh it off…
Yes, it’s the reason I only play terran in team games now. Protoss ground is now far too suboptimal even with a massive skill advantage. If we followed you and removed widow mines, swarm hosts and disruptors the game will be so horrifically bad. There will only be skytoss players left. lmao.
Trying to play 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 seriously is kind of like playing pin the tail on the donkey seriously.
Team games are for laughs with your pals and/or mono-battles with strangers who don’t take it any more seriously then that.
Heck yeah! Heroes of the Storm is tons of fun, even with bad teammates. Deathwing and Malthael are tons of fun to play.
My only issue with team games here is when 2 players protect that one Zerg or Protoss player who only goes air units.
