Gliding tempest

People are saying that tempests are boring. How about giving it like 0.5s to enter a “gliding mode” that moves fast but can’t attack (turn off the zap) and like 3s (but can move in the attack mode speed) to turn back to the “attack mode”?

This way, maybe in the late game, the tempests can have more interesting positioning other than tag along with the death ball.

I dont think the issue with the tempest is its mobility. It needs to have its dps adjusted or do splash damage. Interesting idea though and it would be better than nothing. I also dont like the idea of adding another ability to the protoss army comp.

IMO Tempest should deal splash on ground attacks, it takes too much supply for the DPS if offers and the lategame of Protoss gets too compromised because of that.

Also the DPS of the Tempest is of the worse quality in the game, meaning the Overkill is massive. It need desperately a rework or a buff on the damage, not in the speed just like they did to VR/Zealots.

Yeah, I also think the Tempests should get better damage per second or maybe even splash, as opposed to mobility. That’s just my personal opinion, though.

It doesnt need speed boost or DPS boost. Its mobile siege unit with longest range in the game. It shouldnt get any aoe or DPS. Current tempest is meant to dislodge sieged position. Thats it. The job done. After that it can pick up free units from 15 range to force engagement.

You dont build tempest to win a-move fight. You build it to force enemy fight unfavourable fight or bleed units.

Honestly out of any attack animation in the game the tempest should should do splash

Tempests problem is a lack of damage. However I’m willing to entertain other abilities to make them more useful

Can you remotely imagine the whining if Protoss had 4 sources of splash damage? As much as it actually might fix the tempest… Blizzard will just nerf it again.

Now splash against air… that might give it an actual role. But still would be hard to balance.

Great story. Please make the thor, tank, and liberator into a tempest like unit. You know… let them keep the same range as they do now… but just completely remove all of their DPS and splash. Thanks. Great idea.

Protoss has clearly been the worst race ALL OF LOTV. Not even a brief period of not being a punching bag. We’re at 34% in P vs Z this period (78-150). The greatest feat of futility seen in all of SC 2 for such a sample size, to my knowledge.

If any race needs a unit that is TOO GOOD, it’s Protoss. The only freaking way to balance this game, without buffing every Toss unit is to give Toss a unit that is on par with the viper in terms of strength or… simply as strong as EVERY Terran unit.

IDK, I thought for splash there is high templar and for DPS there is carrier.

My idea is to make tempest also a hit-and-run sniper that can sneak in and take out casters. An independent squad from the golden armada.

It would still have all the current functions, but its otherwise micro is usually just kiting behind the carriers…, which I think is why it’s considered kinda boring.

Yeah definitely a boring and wierd unit. Sometimes it s pretty good in some positioning, sometimes completely useless.

And yet, I keep getting recommendations from people to build tempests against mass BCs.

Im against stupid things. Say something clever and Ill support you with all my heart. Saying SIEGE unit should be fast, with great DPS, tanky and have AOE? Thats not clever.

Except they don’t do their job well because they

  1. Cost too much supply
  2. Come too late
  3. Are severely limited by their position in the tech tree

People avoid making them because they eat massively into the army supply and cost too much to get outside of super late game or dedicated cheese.

Tempests aren’t very fast or tanky. And have one of the worse dps values in the game.
