I know this is an RTS game, but IMO blizzard has done a poor job at retaining/attracting casuals, outside of the recent Co-op; we used to have a flourishing arcade system, and a very popular team game que. The goal of this post is to suggest relatively easy tweaks that can maximize attraction/retention of casuals.
Archon mode
It’s actually a fun mode to play and watch, but finding a game and ranking up is tedious.
-
Make it random que as well. You pick your preferred race and it will try to match you with someone else who also picked that race. If you have no preferred race pick random.
-
To make the ladder more fair, adjust the Archon MMR to be something like True_Archon_MMR=0.5 x [1v1 MMR] +0.5 x [old_archon_mmr]. Basically, this will fix the problem of high masters 1v1 archons being qued against low plat archons due to lack of games played by the former.
2v2
-
Add grand-master league for solo que.
-
Rotate maps as often as we do with 1v1. I understand you don’t want to hire a map-maker, but seriously, just ask the community to submit maps. I have dozens of custom made 2v2 maps I’d like to share.
3v3 and 4v4
- Adjust the MMR to take into account 1v1. GM/Masters who que in these modes rarely have an accurate MMR. So every now and then the system teams up 3 high masters against a bunch of a gold-plats because technically they have low/undetermined team mmr. Formula should be roughly: True Team MMR=0.5 x 1v1 mmr+ 0.5 x team mmr
- Much more maps, solicit the community. Team game players know what type of maps they love.
Arcade/galaxy editor
-
Add dependencies from Co-Op into the Galaxy editor. Basically this allows our arcade-map-makers to use those assets and make more arcade games. (Yeah technically you CAN do this, but its so difficult that only the most advanced mod makers have any clue of how to do this.) Imagine Special Force 5 with top-bar abilities.

Abolish the top-played system. We didn’t have this in Wc3 and it worked out just fine. Current system is bad in the long run because it doesn’t allow new and promising games to be played.
