First Impressions From Reading Mengsk News

For those who don’t know, mengsk is confirmed to be released “late november” New Co-Op Commander: Arcturus Mengsk — StarCraft II — Blizzard News
Gonna list out some “wtf” moments i had while reading the page

First thing to note, it seems his workers can pick up guns somehow, and after level 2, can pick up flamethrowers and rocket launchers. Workers = cannon fodder, i guess?

Mengsk is going to be commandable on the field (i’d assume he uses warfield’s model?) He has an ability to summon mutalisks and ultralisks.

He has medivacs and tanks. Tanks can be loaded into medivacs while sieged. tanks can ATTACK AIR WHILE LOADED INTO MEDIVACS

Thors can walk over units, and similar to zagara’s abberations, give +3 armor to them (after an upgrade)

I assumed he would be in his flagship, the Pride of Augustgrad.

My impression is shock. In bad meaning. I understand co-op was never a canon thing but for a pretty long time it was something normal, something near the canon without cringe. And then Bliz introduced one dead commander, then another one, then turned Stetmann into an even bigger clown. This way we got to the circus with horses. And now releasing Mengsk Bliz shown us they peed on Starcraft concept from a high height.
Yes, the description of Mengsks units and mechanics looks interesting, but

  1. He is dead
  2. His death is even bigger thing than Tychus’ or Zeratul’s - it changed the entire terran race
  3. If Arcturus is still the emperor then who Valerian is? Vermilion and Davis were speaking of Valerian as the emperor.
  4. Mengsk making friends with Raynor, Kerrigan, Stukov is a JOKE! They are ENEMIES. Mortal ones.

There are still many alive and canon commanders who could be created - Izsha, Kalisa, Niadra, Tosh, Urun, Rohana. Even possessed by the time Selendis is not that much canon-braking. Even dead cerebrates, Mohandar and Warfield don’t brake the idea so much! We have a topic here, so many persons had much more votes for them. But the dead antagonist as a co-op commander is just the end of co-op.
Remember my words - next you will get Tassadar, Raszagal, Duran, Overmind and finally Amon himself. Co-op is DEAD. I will not buy this.

It’s not any worse than Greymane and Sylvanas being on the same team in HotS, and I don’t see you complaining over on the HotS forum about it.

Yeah, and you know why? May be probably because I don’t play other Bliz games? Ha? How you like that idea? I don’t play Heroes of storm! Something new!

Which is so unfortunate that other forums aren’t being graced by your overwhelming presence.

I for one am very glad that we got a new commander. Mengsk isn’t my favorite but I always hold my opinion on a commander until I’ve gotten some real game time with it. Judging book by its cover is a terrible quality, which suits you so predictably.

I don’t see it as that big a deal. Even Mengsk would agree that stopping the death of the entire galaxy takes precedence over settling the score with his rivals. He didn’t get to where he is by being a fool. If he has to work alongside his enemies temporarily to stop Amon from destroying his empire, then he’s going to do it.

Dude, you’re just as much of a problem. You keep throwing around “pros” this “pros” that, then put others down for presumably being lesser than you.

OT: I was pretty interested to see Mengsk as the new commander. The Medi-Tank is going to be a silly strat, I know it. Can’t wait to play him, myself. Even if I hate, hate, HATE Mengsk as a character.

No-no. Not me. Presumably being lesser than they can be themselves. Everyone must grow upon himself, learn, develop, struggle, be worthy. Instead I see the majority just leeching, crying, whining and asking for an… easier brutal.

the funny thing is that you say the other massages are “poisonous” when you argument is “MENGSK SHOULD BE DEAD, SO THE NEW COMMANDER IS TERRIBLE”, and Co-Op was never be planned as a canon thing.
*Nova from the future
*Tychus, Zeratul and Mengsk
*A map in Shakuras that should be destoyed (and this one was present since day 1)

Nova is not from future, just her ship and technologies. Yes, this is non-canon too but at least it’s not a big thing if she got her army earlier. But when you have back a dead character whos death ment so much - this is really bad. His death is part of lore, part of narrative, it influenced the entire story. How will they introduce Valerian now? 2 emperors, ya? SC turned into anecdote.

You accept that co-op is non-canon yet dead characters as commanders is apparently a step too far.

You can’t have it both ways.

No. I can.
One thing is when you tricking with timeline and some things that don’t matter much.
The other thing is when you make Starcraft stop being Starcraft.
There is a point where joke goes too far and “this is non-canon” no longer is a justification. And that point is betraying the entire story of 20 year old game.
Said enough, I am outta here.

I LOVE this commander concept- goooood, gonna be so cool. The idea of leveling up units ala command and conquer, being able to use his royal guard, lots and lots of nukes- GIVE IT TO ME.

All the people above whining about canon, get over yourselves. Coop is about getting to play with fun characters in an alt reality. Go play campaign again if you want story.

Canon and non-canon are black and white. There’s no grey area.

I say the biggest joke on this forum is still going hard at it. Seems there is no place too far from where I am standing.

Id be upset if they added a commander that wasnt from the SC universe. But a beloved villain from both games? Come on guys.

What makes it really ridiculous is that Arcturus was in league with Amon. He helped make Hybrids in the hopes he could control them. So we’ve got a character who was dead at the time of the End War, who would have been against the Allied Forces if he had been alive.

At this point they might as well start introducing Warcraft and Diablo commanders. It wouldn’t be any less ridiculous.

But it was clear they were out of ideas when they added Tychus. Saves me having to spend money on new commanders, at least.

Alarak also qualifies as “should be on Amon’s side”. But he realized Amonwasthe greater threat.
Arcturus could do the same (they all teamed up v the UED)

Mengsk wasn’t on the side of Amon, he just wanted the hybrids as a weapon to use against the zerg and protoss. Valerian also helped make the hybrids- he literally signed off on their creation by moebius, which he controlled- it’s just that they were already in production due to Duran’s secret dealings with Mengsk.

Honestly the least loreful thing about Mengsk as a commander is his Dogs of War calldown, where he summons cerberus zerg. It’s a callback to his use of psi-emitters, but in the canonicity of coop they’re still actually cerberus-controlled zerg (or at least, Dr Rudolfo Subsourian of cerberus is involved in it) that he’s dropping onto the field and letting loose on his enemies.

Otherwise it’s generally pretty faithful, indoctrinated troopers as chaff while his elite units (Pretty tanks, generic marauders, pyrokinetic samurai ghosts and his pride of augustgrad battlecruisers) reap the benefits of his favor
