Did the baneling buff help or hurt the game?

Mass baneling is exceedingly common. So much so they had their damage nerfed to compensate for getting more health with the upgrade buf particularly against Terran was this actually a good change?

Was it healthy for the match up?

This change was done because Maru was fast enough and precise enough with his clicks to do critical damage with double drop.
Nobody else is that good.

Overall this change was bad for the game. Making banelings deal less damage to non-light units was good for TvZ, but they become very problematic for PvZ because with health buff banes can roll through Storms.

I’m fairly certain the health buff was for TvZ, the base damage nerf was for PvZ.

Between the health buff patch and the base damage nerf patch, Zerg players were literally rolling in Banelings to assist against non-light units like Stalkers and Archons.

In TvZ, the situation was normally Banelings against Marines supported by Widow Mines or Tanks, and there are several reasons why the changes are less significant in that case than they are in PvZ:

  • Neither Widow Mines nor Tanks were directly affected by the Baneling health buff. Both kill Banelings in the same number of hits.
  • Widow Mines are light, so the base damage nerf has no effect on them.
  • Tanks are rarely killed by Banelings. Most of the significant damage against them comes from Zerglings, Mutalisks, or other units.

This is totally detached from reality. Storm is an extreme hard counter to banelings.
