In this video the host explains that MOBA’s were the main reason that caused the RTS genre to failed. But idk if I buy this. If this is true then how could SC2 even exist with Heroes of the Storm in Blizzard’s library? To me it doesn’t make sense that another genre could kill off another like this.
no, this genra of games is very limited and always has been. mobas are not the cause but simply the fact that no one makes games like this except for blizzard and who ever does age of empire. Rts have always been a niche genra ever since they were created. Theres like ten good decent rts in existence right now. If you want to blame anything for this it would be consoles, cause there are no consol rts games, only pc and pc gaming has been a niche up until a about 10 years ago when they started blowing up and getting more attraction as parts got better as well as prices coming down making it easier for people to build a gaming computer rather than going and buying ps or xbox.
RTS killed itself just like arena shooters did FPS is strong today but not arena shooters and no one even talk about them and all testing of Stormgate tells us game will be slower (i wonder why) so i think that mobas didn’t kill RTS it did it to itself by staying pure mobas just welcomed all players who felt disappointed
Remember all those “go play lol” moments in sc2 history well people listened
rts didnt kill itself there just isnt that many games period and all of them are on pc, well most of them, i think halo got one that is like rts not sure. again its a niche genra of games, always has been always will be.
So we will pretend that all those rts for consoles newer existed???
what rts’s for consols, beside the god forsake sc64. please tell us, id honestly love to know so i can check them out cause frankly i havent ever scene any.
Red Alert Army Men Halo that are ones that i liked to play as kid and will also pretend that fps didn’t evolve by slowing down and simplifying itself from arena shooter days?
Dune 2000 on Playstation and Dune 2 on Sega Genesis lol.
edit: (I find it funny because I played Dune 2 on my Megadrive in my youth)
Because RTS is the most demanding genre, so it feels like work, it’s not rewarding as each time you are reminded how much you suck.
People don’t play RTS so much anymore because people nowadays prefer instant gratification with dumb shooters or stuff.
And I can understand them, as the feeling of losing a very tense game 40 minutes in is freaking garbage.
The smartest thing ive read on this forum to date.
Wasn’t there a Starcraft port for the Nintendo 64?? So, I mean… it really wasn’t just PC, was it?
yeah thats why i said godforsaken sc64
IMO, any game of any genre is slowly killing itself.
The bar can only be raised so high, before it can’t go any higher.
I’m sure we have already seen/played games at their peak, and may not have realized it yet.
What better RTS is there than StarCraft 2 at this time? None that caught my interest. Sure there’s more coming on the market, but I think we hit the peak of RTS already. This is just 1 example, as it is applicable to other genres.
That being said however; do I hope this is the peak of RTS? No, not really. I wish there to be more to come that’ll not only be fun, but also stop trying to gouge the consumer for more money than what’s already paid for.
TL;DR - Games can only get so good. This game is good. Hope future games are good.
I’d argue that RTS fell out of favor because while other genres evolved, RTS stayed mostly stagnant. MOBAs might have made it easier to jump ship but it was hardly the death knell for the genre…it was just a total lack of innovation.
I mean the most varied the genre gets is x4 with grand campaign maps and real time battles or something like Company of Heroes or Dawn of War 2 where base building basically doesn’t exist.
That’s the extent of RTS evolution over the course of like 2 decades.
