Coop doesn’t honor my difficulty setting. Very often, a Coop game I queued as hard is either brutal or normal. I’d be fine with it if it was some matching problem if there aren’t many players around, but seeing how they match within seconds after queuing, this isn’t the case. It also doesn’t taper dificulty to make it some middle ground between my difficulty and my partner’s, I ALWAYS get obliterated with a brutal partner and ALWAYS win 3 times as fast when matched with a normal partner.
my problem is worse, i choose casual but get hard units(usually lurkers). at least you still get experience for hard with a lower difficulty(when you get normal). i get experience for casual with the challenge of hard.
When there are not enough players queuing at the same difficulty then players with different settings can be matched together. When that happens:
- the overall difficulty (timers, strength of objectives, enemy defense and waves that do not target a specific player) is the average of the difficulties that the two player selected (rounded down)
- strength of waves that are sent towards specific player is based on what that one player selected
- game speed is either average or the lower of the two players (I am not sure)
- if one player had Brutal difficulty selected, his expansion will have one less mineral patch (that is always the case on Brutal)
- the reward (XP) is based on the higher of the selected difficulties
I think this is okay and actually easier than when paired with the player that selected the same difficulty. The player who selected higher difficulty should be able to carry the other one (assuming that the player who selected brutal is actually capable of winning on brutal)
If you “match within seconds after queuing” that might just mean that the other player was waiting in a queue for 15 minutes already
This look like a copy-paste of past records and descriptions.
But as I’m also seeing Coop difficulty broken somewhat (how can Tychus and his pals get killed in Normal/Normal, it was impossible once upon a time), I think the issue is precisely that things aren’t working the ways we used to know and were described in the past.
i have gotten enemy lurkers many times when playing casual(both players have selected casual), dispite them being listed as hard+ units.
Lurkers are special in that there may be some of them included directly on the map, while the difficulty should affect the composition of the attack waves, not pre-existing units.
So while encountering Lurkers in Casual is not impossible, I think there’s probably some level of bug too, but I haven’t had enough Casual² games to confirm.
i have seen lurkers in attack waves multiple times when i and the other player have selected casual. maybe there is one tiny detail i should include: it always happens(when it happens that is) on oblivion express. i have not seen it on other maps. that could suggest that the bug is specific for oblivion express.
Getting lurkers in attack waves is a thing that very often happens on pure Normal too, no matter the map. Though I think it’s been happening for a long time already, I vaguely remembered it being discussed 1 or 2 years ago & found the topic “[Co-op] difficulty is messed up”.
My guess is that’s more of a bug with at least one of the Zerg compositions that features lurkers (the “Classic Swarm” or something), because I don’t remember facing them with other comps apart from pre-placed enemies defenses (which is still weird/a pain to have on pure Normal). Still, difficulty does seem to vary greatly from what it is supposed to be lately.
Worst that happened to me recently was 5 lurkers in the same attack wave (along zerglings/hydras of course), mid-game on Part&Parcel. Both my ally (Kerrigan) and me (Vorazun) were on Normal, busy dealing with the 2nd Hybrid alongside the Balius, so I realized too late my expo had no cannons yet. Well that game wasn’t going very great from the start, but 5 lurkers at the same time on, I repeat, pure Normal difficulty might be a bit much, no matter how many Mastery levels/Prestiges you have.
i noticed yesterday that there is another hard+ unit that appears, the swarm host. though still on oblivion express. i never encounter it in attack waves on dead of night. those are the 2 maps i play the most however.
I checked all of that in the past in the editor
