Commander Idea: Ghost Tassadar

In the events leading up to the End War, the Xel’naga Ouros used the ghostly image of Tassadar to give Zeratul the information needed to foil Amon’s dark plans. Now that the End War is in full swing, Ouros again uses the fallen templar’s image as he directly opposes Amon.

Unique economy.

Tassadar’s main building is a Void Shard, instead of using the typical legion of workers to gather resources, he siphons vespene directly into the shard and uses mineral deposits as resonators to allow him to summon armies of void constructs.

Tassadar gains 5 supply from each resonating mineral field under his control (up to 195 supply on a normal map, 150 in Dead of Night thanks to the single base). His ally can not mine from resonating mineral fields.

Since Tassadar does not mine minerals, all of his structures cost supply, with the exception of his expansion void shard, which he only has one of.

“Tassadar” himself is playable, and functions as a heroic worker, personally summoning all of his own buildings. Tassadar is also able to dismiss any of his own units or structures, refunding the supply.

Army

Rather than training units, Tassadar summons batches of void shades from void rifts, similar to Amon’s forces in the Scythe of Amon mission. These rifts cost 10 supply.

Similar to Nova, each batch has it’s own cool down. But unlike Nova you can summon as many Void Rifts as you want, as long as you’re willing to tie up the supply.

Each batch guarantees at least one of each unit in the batch, and the ground batches can be upgraded to have an additional one of each at no extra supply cost. Ground batches do not cost any vespene, air batches do.

Light Infantry Batch

Contains a random assortment of Zealot, Marines, and Zerglings, up to 5 supply.

Heavy Infantry Batch

Contains a random assortment of Immortals, Marauders, and Roaches, up to 10 supply.

Ground Anti Air batch

Contains a random assortment of Stalkers, Cyclones, and Hydralisks, up to 10 supply.

Fighter batch

Contains a random assortment of Phoenixes, Banshees, and Multitasks, up to 15 supply.

Warship Batch

Contains a random assortment of Carriers, Battlecruisers, and Brood lords, up to 20 supply.

Upgrades

Unit upgrades happen at the void temple.

Since Tassadar does not mine, all his upgrades only cost Vespene. However, your void temples costs 5 supply to create, so each one you have means less total supply for your army.

General army upgrades apply to all racial units, divided by air, ground, weapon and armor upgrades. Protoss shields benefit from the armor upgrades of their respective mobility type.

Static defense

Tassadar’s Void Shards attack enemy units with void lightning. In addition he can construct repeating crystals that extend the range of the void shard’s lightning. These cost 1 supply each, and must be placed within range of either a void shard or repeating crystal.

Structures

All of Tassadar’s structures use Blue and white recolors of amon’s void structures.

Here are the originals for reference.

Why. Why this looks so familiar to Tychus for his very expensive units and something like Zeratul in Economy. And these 2 are one of the best and most boring commanders. Why do we need a combine?

Did you actually read any of what I wrote? Because It’s nothing like Tychus.

I can see the parallels with Zeratul’s economy, but if anything it’s like Nova army wise.

May be I should, but why make Tassadar a Xel’Naga like?

The concept itself works, basically a straight up copy of SoA Amon’s structure/spawn, similar enough anyway.

In theory this could work for sure. Although, I am a little concerned at the combined nature itself. Should this be implemented, it’ll signal the end of any new commanders (at least of any single race).

I wouldn’t call it combined really. Tassadar doesn’t use the different races in a meaningful way, he just summons batches of their military units.

Economically he’s nothing like any playable race, and he can’t pick and choose what units of each race he uses. He just summons a random assortment of units that have roughly the same function.

I dig this! I could totally see kitbashed Void structures to be used for his base structures.

I do wonder if a lot of Tassadar’s kit could be mutator-like, so to speak, borrowing concepts from a couple of mutators that relate to Amon’s void power.

Like his own version of Void Reanimators, being able to create these and balanced to revive Tassadar’s voidshade units out on the field out of void energies, with perhaps an upgrade to allow respawning of your allied commander’s forces. Deceased units have a ‘ghost’ image on the battlefield where they died.

Or perhaps that could be a top bar ability, expending a charge to revive units in a small aoe where he has vision, with ‘Tassadar’ himself regenerating fallen units back to life.

If we’re making enemy units / mechanics playable, I’d like to play the five different Hybrid units and Void Thrashers.

I love this idea for tassadar, its one of the most fitting ive seen. But i am a bit concerned regarding it’s simplicity to play; i think having tych and zeratul is enough.
So id say make his eco based on something different, maybe a unique mechanic and it sounds great! (idea below)

Field-based Eco

commander constructs buildings which generate a field similar to pylons, but rather than producing supply/power, they generate resources.
Retrevial rate is relative to the area covered - overlap only counts once.

Plays into the ‘terraforming’ used by Amon in the campaign and SoA mission
