Co-Op Mutation #398: Of Mines and Miners

In a rush to flee the planet, the Kel-Morians left their defense systems unguarded. This allowed the enemy to access the Kel Morians’ missile systems and activate their mine fields. You will need to fend off the defenses and the infested to help the miners evacuate.

Mag-Nificent - Mag Mines are deployed throughout the map at the start of the mission.
Minesweeper - Groups of Widow Mines and Spider Mines are buried throughout the battlefield.
Missile Command - Endless missile bombardments target your structures and must be shot down throughout the mission.

Notes:

  • Large groups of Widow Mines and Spidermines are spawned on the map. Players can destroy these to clear them out.
  • Widow Mines have 180HP, deal 250 damage each with 5 range, and replenish their charges.
  • Spidermines have 25HP, deal 250 damage each, and do not respawn upon detonation.
  • Missiles spawn at the very start, [from the edges of the map]. They slowly fly to the players’ bases.
  • Missiles [deal 100 damage] at first. However, the size increases, and eventually they launch nuke missiles toward players’ bases. Those ones come with a warning sound.
  • Players can shoot down the missiles [10 HP], but sometimes they launch [Point Defense Drones], so shoot those down first. Also, players cannot stop them from spawning.
  • Mag Mines do not respawn upon detonation.
  • Running/flying a few units first to trigger the Mag Mines in an enemy base will make it safer for the rest of your units. Zerglings, Phoenixes are effective for this. Han and Horner’s precision strikes are spectacular for this job.

Mutation (Of Mines and Miners) play list

#213 Of Mines and Miners – 16/18 SOLO CLEAR

Mutators: Missile Command, Minesweeper, Mag-nificent

https://youtu.be/O1cR9dy-YCU (Zeratul p2)

Quite a disgusting mutation if your commander can’t clear mines OR deal with missiles. Consider sacrificing the first ship to buy more time to macro up. Be sure to proactively clear mines and check for them around ships.

The minesweeper mines and Amon’s forces (from attack waves and nydus) are the same faction, while the infested on the map are another faction. This means that the detection on the map does not reveal cloaked units for the widow mines to hit. Beware of stray observers, though, as they will reveal you to the minesweeper mines.

For duos: Kerrigan + Stukov, Swann + anyone who can clear mines

For solo queue: Zeratul, Tychus, Karax

Failures [and why I failed]

Artanis [did not even try]

Zagara (p3) [too difficult to trigger mag mines, dodge them, and clear minesweeper mines]

Successes [and key points]

Abathur (p2) https://youtu.be/n-LVDYsPJO4 [Quite terrible overall]

Alarak (p3) https://youtu.be/zc6LoFIu3Uo [Patrol destroyers vs missile command, Mothership and invisible havoc clear mines]

Dehaka (p2) https://youtu.be/Mp9KNO5EabE [guardians worked out well]

Fenix (p2) https://youtu.be/Q-B502BkqO4 [warbringer clears mines; the rest defend the ship]

HH (p1) https://youtu.be/9TGJDGO16lo [fly reapers when a nuke comes]

Karax (p3) https://youtu.be/1fTKdjhXf0s [can add carriers or colossi in the late game]

Kerrigan (p1) https://youtu.be/F89n-aXoGEw [lurkers with crack creep shred the infested; hydras stop missiles]

Mengsk (p1) https://youtu.be/w2TlHswoTr8 [carefully clear mines with ESOs]

Nova (p1) https://youtu.be/g7Idxb-a70g [patrol marines vs missiles; other units defend the ships]

Raynor (p3) https://youtu.be/0FgNM1R_GzE [need starports for ground presence in the late game (because they are more cost-effective than ebays]

Stetmann (p2) https://youtu.be/pS2V63-lxK4 [Gary is on anti-nuke duty after 15 minutes]

Stukov (p1) https://youtu.be/sriuMkcp56s [slowly clear mines with tanks]

Swann (p2) https://youtu.be/NX2rmm8wHVE [calldowns clear mines]

Tychus (p2) https://youtu.be/Vw8lc52agMU [Sirius clears mines; make turret lines vs missile command]

Vorazun (p3) https://youtu.be/MMpzKY0tX-0 [clear mines with oracles and time stop]

Zeratul (p2) https://youtu.be/YcOzUg6WHkE [spread shieldguards so they can shoot incoming nukes]

Questions about any of these runs are welcome. Some runs will be uploaded tomorrow or the day after.

This mutation is very tough, mines, missiles, heck even mag mines can hamper the evacuation. Ready your defenses and defend the evac ships and your bases from enemy missiles. Recommended commanders:

  • Karax P3
  • Kerrigan P2
  • Vorazun P1-P3
  • Mengsk P3
  • Swann P0
  • Tychus P2
  • Raynor P0
  • Zeratul P2
  • Nova P3

Hit scan AA defenses are your friend. Was running vanilla stukov with a random P2 Stetmann. My guy knew immediately he’ll be on clearing duty while I built bunkers around our bases to defend from the missiles. I also built some infested libs and tanks to support them in the late game. Pretty easy once I secured our bases and could now focus on the mission. Also, I noticed he made ultralisks and had them on hold position on the lanes is this some Stetmann trick I don’t know of?

Karax P3 + Kerrigan P2 for the win!

Ally used Queens to hitscan missiles. I used many cannons, doubling up as defense.

Folly of Man can hit burrowed/cloaked stuff even without detection so that was a nice workaround! I got an Obs, researched its speed upgrade, and that’s enough to zip around and clear out mag mines. Widow Mines can’t hit cloaked stuff  Use SL and OS to clear our mines as needed

Kerrigan died several times, but really dominated!

huh. I thought queens had projectiles since you could still see the spines flying out.

You can see them fly out, but I just assumed they fly so fast that they’re functionally, or practically at least, hitscan?

Most difficult mutation since long. I managed to get it on the third attempt

In the first attempt I used Zagara P1 while my ally was swann. Swann was his slow self and wasn’t present at the first ship. Zagara managed to lose most of the lings and the free banes. Epic Fail…

In the second attempt I was paired with a reynor level 4. The game loaded for 10 minutes and I resigned the moment I got in it…

In the third attempt I was playing Zeratul P3, while my companion was playing Dehaka. After both demonstrating our clumsiness and getting Dehaka and Zeratul killed, losing the first ship, we succeeded at last. Zeratul was on map clearing duty, held of the waves and when needed helped with the main objective, while my ally defended the ships. The last ship had about 100HP left when we completed the mission.

Tough one but the challenge was fun  .

Played as Mengsk P3, paired with Nova P3. Nova was incredible, did exactly what she’s best at — pre-cleared dangerous areas using virtually invulnerable hero. I did my part as I could — built bunkers with troopers on the perimeter of both our bases to intercept missiles, then advanced further in the map. Although we’ve missed both bonus objectives and let the first ship die, later on we were able to get up to speed and form impenetrable defenses on all the remaining five — my upgraded bunker line with armed troopers inside, Nova’s tanks with mines and Imperial Witness for vision/detection did wonders.
